Re: Vickers in Sheffield and Norfolk England

Hi Suzy
I'm new to this site and have just seen your post. I'm a descendant of the Vickers steel family from Sheffield. Vickers didn't buy the then Barrow Shipbuilding Company until 1897 so it was more likely that John Vickers was living in Sheffield.
The founder of the dynasty was James Vickers who was born about 1710. He had a son John born about 1762. It was his son who may be the John you are asking about. If so he was one of 11 childrn and born in about 1788. I've got no information on his marriage or children. It was his brother Edward,1804 - 1897 who got the steel business really going.
I hope tat helps and if you've gathered any information in the last 3 years that adds to this let me know.
Paul

Hi Just spotted your message
Izme's father had been married before to Helen Horton Gage (1841- 1861) they had no children. She was born in Boston Mass in the states and that is where Albert met her. So Izme may have been visiting her step relatives.
Albert is my great great grandfather.

Hi Lesley
Nice to talk to you again. Im shortly coming off this as I accidentally pressed a wrong button and deleted my tree but luckily I have it on Genes. I cant start putting it back it would be a long job with the people I have on it. Someone told me about a Todmorden and Walsden web site I found it and went on it there are some marriages from Heptonstall but these were in the 1800s but can I find any Vickers no way I thought maybe if I didnt find Joseph he would have had brothers or sisters there is no mention of any Vickers even on the grave stones. Im beginning to wonder if they came from somewhere else in Yorkshire and did only Joseph ended up in Heptonstall. Ill have to get in touch with Yorkshire Archaeology Society and see what they can tell me.
Best Wishes Jean

It is my understanding that Ross married, but died without children.

I do not know whether Helen ever married, but would like to contact her descendents, if she has any. Helen's grandparents, Jeremiah and Rhoda Crysler/Chrysler were my great great grandparents. I am hoping that Helen's descendents may have pictures of Rhoda, or even of Jeremiah.

I thought that William may have been the father of E.C., because E.C.s first son was named William. That was the only lead that I had. You said the E.C. had a sister Virginia, E.C. had a daughter named Virginia also. I beleave that you are on the right track. I never could find out where the Wm. was buried. You are the first to connect Thomas to Elias C. Thanks for the info. Elias and his wife are buried in New Haven, W.Va. That is where I live. They left the Kanawaha Valley in the middle of the Civil War. I have more info. on the family. You know that E.C. had several cousins with the name Elias. Thanks again. Robert V.

Does anyone have any idea why Izme Mary Vickers traveled to the US in 1952 to visit Valley of Moon, Glen Ellen, California? Izme is the daughter of Albert and Edith Vickers (daughter of Emma Durham and John Foster. She was born about 1886 in England - brother was Albert Cartwright Vickers and sister was Dorothy Vickers. I think that some of Emma Durham and John Foster's children immigrated to US and am trying to identify them. Emma was the sister of my GGF Frederick Durham. Thanks, Catherine

I am a realtive of that line of Vickers. According to my information Elias Canady Vickers b. 1824 was the son of Thomas Vickers b. abt 1788. William, Thomas and John were the three brothers in that line. Thomas had 4 children; Joseph Harrison B. 1819, Elias Canady, Virginia b. 1829, and James b. 1831. Joseph Harrison is my ggg-grandfather, so I feel my information is pretty good. I have pictures of Joseph Harrison's son Grannville who was my gg- grandfather. I would be very interested in sharing informaiton and anything I have. Here is my home email address (quesada90@hotmail.com) If you would like to talk there and hopefully swap infromation and contact numbbers we can figure some of this infromation out.
