Valmont Vidrine/Emelia GUILLORY

Looking for info on Valmont & Emelia's family. I believe they are the parents of my grandfather Alcee Vidrine who was married to Olivia Granger. My father Dewey Vidrine (b. 1911) was their youngest surviving child. Also, looking for info on my mother's family (Mary Reed Vidrine) parents were Fabian Reed (various spellings to Fabian) and Pauline Chaisson Reed who lived in Fenton.
Any info on these families would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Lynda

Uncle Taft died when I was not quite 2 I think. But I did know Aunt Ola Mae and Uncle (Minus) Theriot. I trying to reconnect my family. I'd love to hear from you. Karen

Re: Vidrines Ardoins

I am also looking for information on this couple; they are in my SILs line.
I have David Ardoin and Devise(or Edvise, Denise)Jean LaFleur as Gerand's parents, per Fr. Hebert's SWLaRecords, vol 3 (ARDOIN, Gerand (David & Devise LA FLEUR) b. 18 Nov. 1831 (Opel. Ch. :v.3, p.233)).
I am still trying to find the parents of Sydalise Jean Baptiste Vidrine. So far the only notation I have found in SWLR is a Sydalise Vidrine born to Zenon Vidrine and Marie Joseph Fontenot on 26 Sept 1846. I DO NOT BELIEVE THESE ARE HER PARENTS because I have found Gerand and Sydalise with infant son Pierre on the 1850 census. If she was born in 1846, she would only have been 4 yrs old in 1850. As it was, she would only have been around 15 when Pierre was born.
Others are showing that Jean Baptiste Vidrine and Eloise Pitre are the parents of Sydalise, but so far I haven't found any proof of this.

If anyone else has any information about the parents of Sydalise (Cydalise) Vidrine, I would be more than grateful for it.

I should point out that so far I have only had access to the first 5 volumes of the Southwest Louisiana Records.

Her name was Lorena. Her parents were Ulgere and Virginia Naquin. So far, the only Native connection I have found was with the Naquins. They were married into the Houma, the Chitamacha, and the Choctaw. Even though their ancester, Amiee Butler, was born in England, my mother says that she was Houma and her family had moved to England and then back to Louisiana. If you have a connection for the Vidrines, I would like to know more. You could write me at pennileb@yahoo.com and I would be glad to exchange information with you.
Penni

I am interested in any information regarding Vidrine's owning slaves. My great grandfather was Aurelie Vidrine who served with Company K, 28th Louisiana Infantry (CSA). He was a young man when he entered service and probably had minimal landholdings. He didn't own slaves, but his father Etienne probably did. In the end though he (Aurelie) controlled quite a large landholding in the vicinity of Ville Platte. His oldest son Julius Casear Vidrine (Jules) became a Medical Doctor by attending medical school in Louisville, KY. The story I heard in the family is that Aurelie sold one of his cattle herds and paid for the entire tuition by this means.

Could she be the Aurore who married Armide Vidrine?

Source: Southwest Louisiana Records by Rev. Donald J. Hébert. Fr. Hébert's SWLRs begin with the year 1750 and end with the year 1909.

I found three individuals named Armide Vidrine on the Social Security Death Index:

1) Armide Vidrine b. 7 Nov 1909 d. June 1991 - Place of death unknown. There was no Zip code to identify his last residence; his SS# ISS LA

2) Armide Vidrine b. 11 Aug 1902, d. March 1984, Ville Platte, LA 70586 - I did not find him listed in SWLR. His SS# ISS LA

3) Armide Vidrine b. 24 Mar 1878, d. Dec 1967 Ville Platte, LA.
Have you ever run across an Appoline Vidrine in your records??? According to my great-grandmother's (Elmire Ortego) marriage records from Sacred Heart Church-Ville Platte...her parents were Lucious Ortego and Appoline Vidrine. By the way, I was born in Ville Platte and am planning to visit the area again in 2005. Thanks SO much.

Alcin Vidrine CSA LA Infantry 16th Reg. Co.K

I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this man. He is my husband's paternal gr.gr. grandfather.

I have in my database, the following:
Alcin Vidrine (Antoine & Marie Josephe [dite Josephine] Ortego) b. 21 Oct 1845, d. 1 Aug 1932.

He married on 12 Feb 1867 to Estelle Andrepont (Phillipe & Emilie Pitre) b.1 Feb 1849 d.15 Jan 1918.
They were the parents of 13 children...[8 boys and 5 girls].

Their daughter, Ada Vidrine m. Jos. Felix Hargroder, is who my husband descends from.

My sources for the above information are mainly SWLR CD and Tombstone inscriptions. [Alcin's grave has a CSA headstone inscribed with the above information].

Today, I came across some conflicting information about this same Alcin Vidrine [same birthdate, same parents, same CSA Unit, but with a different wife.]

This information is an abstraction of a biography done on Alcin Vidrine published in 1891, by The Gulf Publishing Company.

The article states that his wife is "Miss Mary E. Thompson, a native of Louisiana, born in 1848."

SWLR CD has no record of this marriage...prior to 1891, which is when the article was published.

The birthyear range for Alcin's children with Estelle Andrepont is from 1868 to 1895.

Any comment on this will much appreciated. Thanks, Rita
Hi Terry,
Thanks for the reply. I would be very interested in the Hargroder data that you are willing to share -and will be happy to share what info I have, as I have not come across too many people researching this line.
As for Alcin Vidrine...since posting on this message board I have obtained a copy of Alcin's & his widow's CSA Pension Application. According to the application of his widow, Alcin did indeed remarry after the death of his first wife. On 19 Oct. 1919 Alcin (Antoine & Marie Josephe Ortego [dite Josephine]) married Marie Celima Thibodeaux (Celestin & Estelle Reaux) at St. Landry Catholic Church, Opelousas, La. Marie Celima was born 14 Feb 1870, Grand Coteau, La. She died abt Aug. 1961 in New Orleans, La. at the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1501 N. Johnson St., New Orleans 16 [sic], La. I do not know if she was buried in New Orleans or if her body was brought back to Grand Coteau area for burial.
Application states that Alcin died on 1 Aug 1932.
If you prefer, my email is grannyh@directvinternet.com. Looking forward to hearing from you....Thanks, Rita

This Clothilde was baptized at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Chataignier, LA. Early Chat. Ch. records are stored at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. (Eunice Ch.: v. 2, p. 87)

Most of my information comes from 41 volumes of "Southwest Louisiana Records" by Rev. Donald J. Hebert. These records begin in 1750 and end with the year 1909.

I do not have Olivier Bazinet in my database.
Good morning again Patsy,

I found Oliver Bazinet's birth & death dates on the Social Security Death Index. I did not find his birth/baptismal record in Hebert.

To learn the names of his parents, try asking the funeral home in Basile that handled his funeral arrangements to furnish you with a photocopy of his death certificate. There may be a small charge. I paid $3 each for photocopies of my parents' death certificates. The Ardoin Funeral Home in Ville Platte, LA handled my parents' funeral arrangements.

Louisiana Secretary of State Vital Records: http://www.sec.state.la.us.archives/archives.archives-birthf...

Louisiana Secretary of State Birth-Death Cert.Application Form can be downloaded. Do not send cash. $5 is what I recall sending, but all of this information is on the web site.

I also found Chester Bazinet's birth and death dates on the SSDI: b. 13 Jan 1916, d. Did any of your people attend the Bayou Chicot School? Ch., Elodie Johnson.

Simeon (aka Meillon in his marriage record, but called Simeon/Simon in his children's baptismal and/or marriage records).

Simeon, b. Abt. 1839, died July 23,1899, in St. Landry Parish, bur. at age 60 years, Mammouth Cemetery (Mamou?) (Eunice Ch.: v. 1, p. 94); Simeon Vidrine m. Carmelitte Sonnier Succ. dated 27 October 1899 (Opel. Ct. Hse.: Succ. #5603)

Perhaps a visit to the Mamou cemetery would reveal his birth date.

Sometime ago, I corresponded with another researcher who found the person that seems to be Simeon on the 1860 St. Landry Parish census under the family of Lenon Vidrine. At first I thought of Zenon Vidrine, but that did not fit. Then I found Leon Vidrine 22-years-old (Etienne & Victoire Soileau) m. 14 November 1839 Agatha Vidrine 21-years-old (Jean Baptiste & Eloise Pitre (Opel. Ct. Hse.: Mar. Q-53) and decided that Simeon may be their son.

Meillon Vidrine m. January 15, 1858, in St. Landry Parish Ct. Hse.: Mar. #1690, Carmelite Sonnier, parents' names not listed. I can only assume that Simeon (Meillon) may have married Carmelite Sonnier, d/o Marcellin and Marie Azelie Broussard.

Hopefully, Simeon's Succession record can supply the information you need.

Best regards,
Rosie Morein Wells
Birmingham, AL

Dear Jason,

I too am stuck at the marriage of Meillion Vidrine and Carmelite Sonnier. Meillon aka Simeon Vidrine, may have been the s/o Leon Vidrine and Agatha Vidrine, but I cannot prove it.

Notes for Simeon (aka Meillon) Vidrine:
Simeon Vidrine, d. 23 July 1899 at age 60 years; bur. at Mamouth Cemetery (Mamou?) (Eunice Ch.: v. 1, p. 94); Simeon Vidrine m. Carmelite Sonnier, Succ: 27 Oct 1899 (Opel. Ct. Hse: Succ. #5603) Hebert, V. 30, p. 496

Marriage notes for Carmelite Sonnier and Simeon Vidrine:
Sonnier, Carmelite m. 16 Jan. 1858 Meillon Vidrine (Opel. Ct. Hse.: Mar. #1690) found in Hebert, Special Additional "S" Records left out of Volume 6.

Suggest you send for his Succ. That may answer your question. I am not a Sonnier descendant, but my maternal grandmother, Adelaide Simon Fontenot m. (#1) Arthur Erange Sonnier; after Arthur died, Adelaide m. my grandfather, Villeneuve LeDoux, widr. of Azema Ardoin.

While visiting in Mamou last summer, I was given a picture of Moise Sonnier, my mother's half-brother, his wife, Marthe Fontenot, and their son called "Lou". I was also given "Nonc Moise" discharge papers. He died from injuries received in WWI. I was really pleased to receive these precious pictures and papers.

More later.

Rosie Morein Wells
Birmingham, AL

Simeon Vidrine m. Leona McCauley April 21, 1892, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ville Platte, LA

Dear Paul,

I am a French-speaking native of Ville Platte, Evangeline Parish, LA. I have been doing genealogy research since I retired 13-years-ago from the University of Alabama in Birmingham where I was employed as an Editorial Assistant.

Simeon Vidrine was the s/o Valmont Vidrine &
Emelie Guillory. Leona McCauley was the d/o Alcindor McCauley & Emelie Aucoin.

I have listed 9 children for Simeon and Leona; I have birth records for 7 of these children, b. bet. 1893 - 1906, but I have only the names of William Taft Vidrine and Emily Vidrine.

For many years, I freely answered 100s of questions posted to Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com, My Family.com, and RootsWeb.com, but I no longer do that.

Finding a publisher for my very large research file, 65,000 individuals, has not been easy. I am now offering to do genealogy research for others for a modest fee.

If you are interested in purchasing genealogy information on your family, you may write me at my web-based e-mail.

I have Abner Fontenot and Homerine Fuselier in my database. Abner was the son of Faustin Fontenot and Angelina Nevils. Homerine Fuselier was the d/o Homer Fuselier & Lucia Ardoin.

Best regards,
Rosie Morein Wells
rose@cajunclearinghouse.com

Re: slave transactions by the Vidrines

Ms. Mosby,
My mother is a Vidrine, and I have done some research on my branch of the Vidrine family tree, which is actually quite extensive, especially in Evangeline parish(formerly St. Landry parish in the years 1840 to 1850 that you are interested in). This much I know: Etienne Vidrine owned a plantation prior to the Civil War near the Ville Platte area. I've been told it was about 1000 acres. After the Civil War, his son, Aurelie, took over the plantation. Perhaps you can use these names in a search through census records, which usually tally up all property and assets. My guess as to where the Vidrines purchased their slaves would be either Opelousas or New Orleans. Most plantation owners in Louisiana and Mississippi went to New Orleans to purchase slaves. I also suggest putting in a call to or visiting Tulane's Amistad Research Center, which is dedicated to the study of African American heritage. I have found a census record reporting that Jean Baptiste de Vedrines (the first Vidrine in Louisiana) had a slave named Cesaire, but this was around 1780 or so and long before the time period you're interested in. I do know the Vidrines owned many slaves in the mid 1800s. If I find anything more in my research that may be of help to you, I'll be sure to contact you. Hope some of this might help.
Sincerely,
Katy Morlas
