Re: Sarah Viera, Born in Rio Piedras Puerto Rico, Living in NY Looking for any relatives

As far as I know, the last name is Portuguese and Spanish (Galicia). This might be a stretch, but I believe it's a translation for the word "scallop," particularly the scallop that the goddess Venus, according to Greek and Roman mythology, rode on her way to shore. Since the Portuguese were a seafaring nation, we just might be descendants of scallop diggers and not some royal Portuguese family as one of my professors as Baruch College told me -- perhaps to make me feel better about myself. At least I have a fairly clear idea where I come from. Most of my acquaintances don't even know who their father is, let alone want to dig up their ancestry. So be proud, Sarah.

A long time ago, while growing up in La Trocha, Vega Baja, a teacher told me that the Vieras on the island were one big family. So perhaps we are related. I live in The Bronx (Kingsbridge)and my family is actually a tribe. There are a lot of us. If it turns out you and I have practically nothing in common, you'll never be a stranger. Good luck in your endeavors, and don't be afraid to give me a call at (718) 543-2704 or e-mail at edvierajr@yahoo.com.

Michelle,
I wonder if we are related somehow. My grandfather on my fathers side was named Manuel Vieira. I didnt know him as he had allready passed before I was born. He was born in the Azores-Madeira. My fathers name was Walter G Vieira. They were both from NewBedford also. I dont know much about my grandfather but I do remember my Dad saying he was in the Merchant Marines and had spent time in California.

Hi,

I am Debra. Daughter of Larry and Midge. I have done geneology and was under the impression that Iloff was a German name. It is quite interesting and not surprising actually that it is originally Russian considering it sounds more Russian than German with the "off" ending. I do know that Henry Iloff (my great,great,great grandfather) came from the Alsas-Lorraine region upon immigrating to America. That region of course wavered between French and German domaine due to the battles that went on there at that time. But apparantely Henry's family must have come from Russia. I studied Russian for 1 1/2 years in junior high and high school and picked up the language easily. I have still retained a good portion of what I had learned. Anyway....this is interesting to know.

Take Care...Debra

Hi Sarah;
I too am looking for some ancestry info. I was born in Rio Piedras and my family was from Cupey Alto. My grandfather on my father's side was named Domingo Viera and my grandmother was Adolfina Figueroa. My father's name is David and he had 4 or 5 brother and 1 sister.
I also learned that there is an Italian surname as well as the Portugese. I'm trying to narrow this down. Any info will help.

There is also a book called Historia de Trujillo Alto (out of print) that mentions him. His wife's grave is in the Municipal Cementery of Rio Piedras. Let me know if you want the information.

I found a Felipe Viera in Trujillo Alto maried to Monserrate Guadalupe in 1825. It seems more than coincidence that rhe names are practically the same in both branches.

it seems my viera's up until now are mostly found in the trujillo Gurabo area, and they come from Lanzarote, Islas Canarias. They descend from Mariano Viera son of Domingo Viera married to Josefina Rubin. There is an Ambrosio Viera Vega married to Maria Rosario Diaz in the Trujillo census of 1860. Apart from the last name we share a lot of first names which I suppose are family names, do you know if there's any connection?

Thanks for your message. I will add your names to my genralogy group.We are related because your ancestor Jose Viera married to Catalina Hernandez had a son, Jose Gertrudis,(Joseito)born 1st November, 1857 who married Maria Valentina Saavedra born in 1864.My grandmother, Maria Mercedes Viera born 6 Sept. 1884 was Valentina's only daughter. Valentina died 1884 and Joseito married again and had more children.My grand mother married Ramon Rosendo Viera born 1 March 1880.Rosendo" Sendo"was a granson of Felipe Viera junior, and a great grandson of Felipe senior and Sebastiana.That is my grandparents were both Viera and were something like second cousins.

I want to reply to the person who wrote she had an ancestor named Felipe Viera who came to Quebradillas from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. His wife name was Sebastiana.He was my ancestor also. My mother was born in Quebradillas. Her parents were second cousins. They were both decedants of Felipe and Sebastiana. I have more information and would like to share .My mother had told me her family was spanish and italian. Somewhere i found the Viera name came from northern Italy, then to Spain and Portugal . From there to the new world.

My Viera family came from Santa Cruz, Tenerife and lived in Quebradillas where some of them still remain.I visited the Canaries about a year ago and asked around. Apparently there are still Vieras there but it would be difficult to trace the family that far. I do not know if there is a connection between your family and mine because by the time I started asking questions all the older ones had passed. Good luck in your search.

Ibelieve my ancestor Felipe Viera and wife Sebastiana Feo with a small female child arrived in Quebradillas some time between 1828 and 1834. I calculated that from a history of Quebradillas I found on line and other records. I obtained permission from the Arecibo catholic Dioesce to look at catholic church records a few years ago. They would not let me look at the oldest books as they told me they were very fragile. However I did find a lot of batismal and marriage records for a lot of ancestors. One of Felipe,s son was also Felipe. He married Catalina Batista. I found heR year of birth as 1839. ONE OF HER SONS Desiderio was born 1857 which means she was 15 whe she had him. So that is why going one generation up from Catalina should be in 183?

Just by pure chance, I happened to be visiting my mother and we started talking about the Viera's ancestors in her family. I decided to google the name Deogracia Viera Rodriguez and BINGO!!, I came across your postings. Deogracia Viera Rodriguez was the brother of your ggg Bernardo Viera Rodriguez. Deogracia was my gg and my mother's grandfather. He was born in 1863 in the Canary Islands, and died in 1947. He was married to Juana Sosa Hernandez, also from the Canary Islands. They both arrived to Puerto Rico on the same boat and their families settled in what was then known as Trujillo Bajo, now known as Gurabo. Don Deo and Dona Juana had seven children, Ruperta, Maria, Teodoro, Petra, Amadeo, Providencia, and Deogracia Jr. Don Deo (as Deogracia used to be known) became a sugar cane farmer and made a fortune speculating on sugar during the 1st World War. Later he opened a horse racetrack known as the Hipodromo Quintana, near what is now the burrough section of Hato Rey in San Juan. My mother doesn't remember much of Don Deo's siblings but I can refer you to a cousin of ours, Eileen Collins Viera, who has taken the time and interest in searching further on the Viera's roots. She may know a little more. Her email address is eacv@mac.com
