William Freeman Vilas, son of Judge Levi B Vilas, VT>WI, 1851

There are biographical sketches for William Freeman Vilas in both the "History of Dane County, Wisconsin-1880" & the "History of Dane County, Wisconsin-1906". Here's a recap: He was born in Chelsea, Orange Co, VT, July 9, 1840. His father was Judge Levi B. Vilas. They came to Madison, WI in 1851. William F was a Lieutenant Colonel and commanded the 23rd Infantry in the Civil War. He was a lawyer in Madison, WI. He served under President Grover Cleveland as postmaster general, and secretary of the interior (1885-89), and as U.S. Senator (1891-97). He married Anna Matilda Fox (born Oct 15, 1845), daughter of Dr. William H Fox and Cornelia Averill --- they had three children --Cornelia, born May 31, 1867; Henry, born May 28, 1872; and Mary Esther, born Oct 10, 1873. Cornelia Vilas Guild Hall was given as a memorial to his daughter, and Henry Vilas Park was give to the city of Madison in memory of his son. William F died August 27, 1908 and had left his multi-million dollar estate to the University of Wisconsin.
Some of my ancestors had the surname Vilas, until one of them dropped the "s" in the early 1800s. I have been able to trace my Vilas, da Vila, and Vila ancestry all the way back to the 1700. I got my genealogical information from the Historical Archives of the Dioceses of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain. Most of my ancestors were born in villages near a town called Zas, but I am currently investigating the possibility that they may have originally come from a city called Vigo, Galicia, not far from the northern border with Portugal. The area was settled by the Celts, among other tribes, in ancient times. Good luck with your research, Dominick Vila

Vicki,
Elizabeth was born on November 22 1857 and died in 1936 in New York where her son Charles and his wife Faith lived by way of Evanstan, Illinois. They had three children, two boys, Franklin and Charles (Karl) and one daughter, Faith. Faith married a Newfoundlander, Cambell MacPherson whom later became Lieutenant Governor . They had four children, Heather, Cluney, Suzanne and Ian. Heather is my mother. I would be interested to know the nature of your inquiry? Are you related? I know few of my relatives on that side of the family, most of the genelogical work has been done on the Van Valkenburg side, Elizabeths daughter-in-laws family. In fact, I have a copy of a letter written to Mrs.Charles Atwood Vilas (Elizabeth's daughter-in-law) from her nephew Captian Franklin Van Valkenburg better known as Lynee to his family, who was Commander of the Arizona, then stationed in Pearl Harbour. The date is Novemeber 4th 1941, barley a month before he lost his life on the bridge of the Arizona during the deadly attack. Mrs. Charles Atwood, known as Faith Van Valkenburg Vilas was a poet and and artist, some compare her work to Geogia O'Keefe. She didn't start to paint till she was in her sixties. I have some of her work as do other members of my family. If there is anything specific information you require let me know and I will endeavor to find an answer.
Regards,
Sarah

Re: Vilas of Wisconsin

Vicki,

I am helping my friend research her family. Recently, I found a Robert J. VILAS and his wife Sarah, living with Michael and Josephine (Vilas?) LUDWIG family in the 1920 Clark Co., Washington census. Robert and Sarah VILAS are listed as father-in-law and-mother-in-law in the LUDWIG home.

All of the above list their birthplace as Wisconsin. Robert J. VILAS lists his parents birthplace as England.

Next door to the LUDWIG family is Tom VILAS, also b. in Wisconsin.

In the 1930 Clark Co., WA., census, I found a Charles J. VILAS b. in Wis. Charles VILAS had a son named Robert J. VILAS in his home. Tom and Charles J. VILAS appear to be connected to Robert J. and Sarah VILAS.

In the Washington State Death Index, there is a death listed for Robert J. VILAS, who died Oct. 6, 1941, in Vancouver, Clark Co., WA. His age is listed as 90. That would make his birth year about 1851.

Do you recognize any of these Wisconsin VILAS? I am hoping to connect my friend with family members.

Thank you,
Shirley Dunn

Re: Familia Vilas

Raul Pino
