Classification: Query
Surnames: Voiles, Viles, Voyles, Voils, Vowells, Vowels, Vowell, Vowel
If you are a male bearing the Voyles surname, or any spelling variation of the Voyles surname, you are invited to participate in the Voyles DNA Surname Study. Objectives of the Voyles DNA surname study include:
1. collection of DNA from descendants of all four branches of the Jacob Voyles family - William, Thomas, John and James; and
2. a determination of whether certain lines bearing the Voyles surname are actually descendants of the Vowell families of Virginia.
To begin the study, each participant will take a 12 marker Y-DNA test. This test costs $99, plus $2 U.S. shipping. After receiving the results, some participants may opt to upgrade their tests to include additional markers at an additional fee.
Only males are eligible to participate in this study because we are testing the Y chromosome, which is passed, virtually unchanged, from father to son, generation after generation. Parts of the Y chromosome are examined to discover certain patterns, which can be compared to the patterns of other participants in the study. If the patterns match, then the participants share a common ancestor. If no match is found, then the two males analyzed do not share a male ancestor.
A DNA test will not tell you who your ancestors are. However, it will tell if two
or more participants share a common ancestor. It will also give you a probability of the number of generations to the Most Recent Common Ancestor. The more markers that match, the tighter the time frame for isolating the Most Recent Common Ancestor.
We have selected FamilyTreeDNA to conduct our testing. Much more information about Y-DNA testing is available on their website at http://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspx.
You can sign up for the Surname Study by going to http://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspx and typing in “Voyles” (no quotes) in the search box in the top right hand corner.
Spelling variants included are this study are: Voyles, Voiles, Voils, Viles, Vials, Vowel, Vowells, Vowels and Vowell.
If you have questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me at cavoiles@cox.net.
