Norman,

My husband's family is from Ashton Under Lyne. The ancestor there would be Frances. She is also known as Fanny. She remarried with two young sons, William and John. She married Edward Healey. He can be found in the 1861 English census. My husband's family came over to Rhode Island about 1890. There were two brothers, John and George. John was married to Harriett Davies. George was married to Sarah ? . Later George and Sarah divorced,John died, George married Harriett. George's children went to California and have many descendents there today.

Hope this helps.

Karen
I've now got a bit further with this. Reuben Vine's (1932) father was Reuben Henry Vine (born 1908) in Bedwelty, Wales.

His father was Oliver William Vine (born around 1882?). Can anyone tell me anything about this man.

Regards
Hi

I'm trying to track members of the Vine family that probably resided in Ireland.

I'm finding it very difficult to get off the starting blocks with this family. My fiance's grandad was Reuben Oliver Vine (1932) and his parents were Reuben Henry Vine and Sarah Parker. I've been told Reuben senior came over from Ireland and was the son of a William Vine.

Apparently William had many many children and used to send them on their way at 12 years old with a tiny bit of money.

I can't find any record of anybody (apart from Reuben Junior) anywhere!! Can anybody help??!

Regards

Jade

Ida Carper was my wife's grandmother. Peter Vine was not her natural father. I have Anna's date of death as June 12, 1912. This was the date We have in a letter written to Ida by Earl Crane. I would be interested in a copy of Earl Cranes death certificate. Also any more information on Anna Bailleaux as I have very little.

My great-grandfather via my fathers mother was Harry Vine, who was born in Otterbourne on 3.3.1850, son of Henry Vine and Frances Payne. Harry married Rebecca Hawkins. Harness-making seems to have been a family buiseness. Family moved to Beaulieu, later Hythe. I would greatly appreaciate any information you may have on the family. I now live in Scarborough but am planning on visiting The New Forest in the near future and am keen to contact family members.

Not sure if there's any relation or not. The Bailleaux name was what my grandmother had written down, with no further info. Last name is also shown on son Earl Crane's death certificate. 1910 census, Toledo Ohio, shows Anna (Bailleaux) Vine as age 34 & shows as married 5 years. There were 2 daughters shown-Ida & Viola, & 2 sons-William & Earl. I believe only the sons were Vines. Anna must have died sometime after 1910 census. Per son William's 1977 obituary, he had sisters Viola Norris & Ida Carper, who lived in Columbus.

Terry,
my husband Peter Swinbank is the great grandson of George Vine, b 1821, the brother who stayed at home in Lincolnshire. Peter' aunt Jen (Jane) is the grand-daughter of George Vine and was born in 1908 in Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, about 20 miles from Howell. George Vine's son, John Henry, had 7 daughters & 3 sons, most of whom produced offspring, and their descendants (many of them) still live in south Lincolnshire to this day.
A few years ago we had correspondence with Mrs Marilyn Kallevang of Decorah, Iowa, a descendant of John Vine, like yourself, but I believe that sadly this lady is now deceased. Was she a sister or cousin of yours?
If there is anything I can tell you about the Vine family, please let me know. I'd be really interested to hear about your line of descent. Have you ever visited Howell? It's a really lovely little place.

Nevada Davenport Vine b. Westmoreland Co, PA

I am searching for information on the descendants of Nevada Davenport Vine. She is the daughter of Rev. Joseph Davenport 1851-1944 who was a United Brethren Minister at the Barren Run Church near Smithton, South Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA. Nevada's nickname was "Nettie" and I believe her middle name was Annette. She married J.W. Vine who died in 1937. They relocated to Alabama from PA. Nettie must have been born in the 1870's or 1880's.

I would like to know the name of her mother and any children, grandchildren, etc. she may have had. Her father was my great-grandmother's only brother.

I have been told she had an older brother also named Joseph Davenport who went to Alaska in 1900 to find gold and was never heard from again.
Seeking portraits of William Vine and his daughter Esther

Further to my previous posting, about his diary.... I have now located a photocopy of the diary in East Sussex Records Office: the original was sold by auction in 1990 to an unidentified private buyer (can anyone please put me in touch?).

I now also have a b&w photograph of a portrait of William Vine's youngest daughter Esther (my gg-grandmother) but no clue as to when or where the photo was taken.

These portraits were probably painted by Henry Bodle, the same artist who painted the watercolour of William Vine's mill. Any clues or possible lines of enquiry welcomed ! William had five daughters and only one son, and it seems quite possible there are no surviving 'Vine' descendants - though I am in touch with a number of descendants of his other daughters.

William Vine's diary

I would very much like to locate the present whereabouts of William Vine's diary. My ggg-grandfather William Vine was a miller in Brighton, Sussex (c1790-1836) and a prominent member of the (Particular Baptist) Salem Chapel in Brighton. We know that he had a diary, and that it survived until at least 1934, as quotations from it were published in an article about him in the Sussex County Magazine by Raymond H. Belton. Raymond Belton was a gg-grandson of William Vine. I have so far had no success in tracing Raymond Belton's descendants, though have established that his elder brother was the Rev. Leslie Belton, one of the founders, in 1944-5, of the National Unitarian Fellowship in the UK.

Whoever has the diary probably also has two paintings which I would also like to find - a portrait of William Vine, and a painting of his windmill by Henry Bodle, his son-in-law.

Any information at all which might lead to these items would be welcome! - Steve Henley

History of Winneshiek County, Iowa

Winneshiek county also boasted of a goodly number of Englishmen. Among the earliest of these were George Yarwood, Harry Wheatmen, Edward and John Vine and John Pickworth, who lived out on the prairie beyond the Peter E. Haugen farm in the southwest corner of Decorah township. There was another settlement in Lincoln township, another in Hesper, while in Decorah there was the late Co1. William Thurlow Baker and his brothers, Capt. Charles G. Baker and John T. Baker and their families, R. F. B. Portman (still a resident here), A. J. Ashmore, the Clive brothers, H. H. Horn and family, Capt. S. Charles Welsh and wife, and a number of others whose names are not now recalled. They brought with them their customs and the traditions of England. Those who resided in Hesper and Lincoln townships were a particularly lively set of fellows, mostly young men who had come here to engage in farming, but whose previous experience and lack of knowledge of local requirements did not hold out much hope of success. Whatever may have been their shortcomings in these respects, they were generally plentifully supplied with money and knew how to win their way socially, so as long as the purse was free they were not poor in companionship or enjoyment.

The fact there was a lincoln townships indicates alot of Englishmen may have came from the Lincolnshire , England area..

Now I see someone has mentioned the REAL Vine family, the Howell lincolnshire Vine's finally, ...I have traced the family back to

George Vine Born 1791 in Howell, Lincolnshire, England...he married Thomasina Hilton born 19 Sep 1792. in Heckington, Lincolnshire, England..

George and Thomasina had 8 children that I have found and Possibly 9. Another George Vine who was listed in the 1881 Census of England living in Heckington, Lincolnshire, England...but born in Howell.

the 8 children i have listed are

Mary Vine born 1818
George Vine born 1821
Elizabeth Vine born 1824
Robert vine born 1826
William Vine born 1830
Edward Vine born 1835
Frederic Vine born 1839
and my beloved GGrandpa John Vine .born 1832

The Vine brothers took off for America...some i see settled in the West Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts AREA. and started families..
I know nothing of my relatives back east.. looks like 3 of the brothers came to Decorah Area, Winnesheik Co, Iowa
1 of them i cannot track and have no clue where he went to..
John Vine married Anna Johannesdatter in the Decorah area and raised his family ..which is mine...
His Brother Edward Vine married Miss Margrete Reiley and started a family in Calmar , Winneshiek County, Iowa.
The Thomasina Hilton line in the Heckington, Lincolnshire, England I have traced back to about 1650 ...
I was Hoping someone might know about the Vines from the Howell, Lincoln, Temple Bruer, Lincolnshire, England. George and Thomasina's kids and where all ended up at and also..about the branch of the family that stayed back east in the West Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts . area and started families. ..
Jean Swinbank seems to be mentioning the same family. in her reply to Julie.
Also is there any family still left in the Howell Lincolnshire area..Good luck with your Vine research !
Re: 'Vine Family in Kent, England

Hi Kathy,

I'm not sure how much help I can be, but I'm looking for information of John and Isabella Shepherd as well! I think my great-great-great grandfather William Shepherd was their son.

According to the St Paulinus Crayford parish register transcripts I have on CD, there were seven children: Jane 1813, Henry 1815, John 1818, Caroline and Mary Anne 1821, and Eliza 1824. Only William, Jane and Henry survived infancy.

I have found no record of John's death, nor any census records for him. In the 1861 census I found the following household in Bromley, Middlesex: Henry Gold, age 47, born Chiselhurst, Kent; Jane Gold, age 47, born Crayford, Kent; Alfred Gold, age 20, born Bromley; John Gold, age 12, born Bromley; Harriet Gold, age 17, born Bromley; Eliza Gold, age 9, born Bromley; Isabella Shepard, mother-in-law, age 70, born Dartford, Kent; William Shephard, brother-in-law, age 35, born Crayford, Kent. William's age is a few years out, but this is common enough on census returns.

I found the Gold family in the 1851 census, in Bromley. They also had a son George born about 1838. William and his wife Mary named three of their children Jane, George and Alfred - note the similar names.

In the Dartford parish register I found no trace of Isabella Vine, but I found the baptism of Isabella Bine, daughter of John and Ann, born Apr 26, bap. May 2. I wonder if this could be Isabella Vine? I haven't seen John and Isabella's marriage entry, only what's on the familysearch website.

I also have a death certificate for Isabella Shepherd: date of death 28th Nov 1869 at 3 Thomas Place, Bromley, age 82, widow of John Shepherd, silk printer, cause of death 'sinilis', informant Eliza Gold, 56 Catherine St, Bromley.

I'm hoping to find information on William and Mary, as their sons George and Alfred appear in Dartford Union Workhouse in the 1861 census, and I can find no trace of Mary after 1851.

Hope some of this is of help to you!

Ruth Reeve
