Bryan, not sure if my previous message got to you or not, please e-mail me privately at svirdenges@aol.com as I have tons of information for you on your Virden line.

Jasper Virden was my father's first cousin. Jasper's father, Alfred Leroy (aka Roy)Virden, and my Dad's father (Thomas Charles Virden) were brothers. I have a Virden family Bible that has handwritten information on the Virden family line particularly your great great grandparents Charles & Josephine (original pioneer family of Farmington, New Mexico).

I currently live in San Diego (way way far from you in Maine) but I would love to correspond with you and be pleased to send you copies of all info that I have and share what you have to add to my stuff. E-mail me privately (I check my e-mail regularly--this time we were out of town for 6 days for a college graduation) and we can exchange addresses and phone numbers.

Oh this is so exciting to find another Virden family connection. I have several of our "cousins" that will be thrilled. I have pictures and tons of stories to share with you about our Virden/Maupin family dating way back into the 1600s-1700s, Civil War information, etc.

Please e-mail me at svirdenges@aol.com.

Hi Susan,

My name is Bryan. I have recently taken to researching my family tree. Virdens are my mothers side. Jasper Virden was my grandfather b. 11/11/19 in Durango CO. His father parents were Leroy and Eva. On a side note it has been difficult tracking down Leroy. He has gone by seveal variations of his name in the census's. I found him as Leroy, Alfred Le Roy (Le R), and Roy. I don't know if you have any information regarding my grandfather, but he passed away march 27 1988 in Ukiah CA. Grandma Janice(her maiden name is Elam)passed away april 26 1999 also in Ukiah. My Uncle Robert is in Alabama and my mother, Roberta resides between AZ and OR. I had a brother who was born, Lee Vernon Rhodes, November 1976 in TX. He passed away July 1993. I was born in Augut 1973 in AZ and currently reside in Maine. I have a son Skyler Rhodes who was born in March 2002 in OR.
I am very interseted in discovering all that I can. Please feel free to contact me. If you have any information you would be willing to share it would be very welcome. I am curently putting together a family tree here where I found your post from 2001. Thank you so much for your post.

Bryan Rhodes

Hi and thanks for the reply. Edy Virden is my uncle and I guess the first born. My Grandmother was Vera. Have you heard of her? So is Mattie your aunt?

I am not sure if you can view the family tree I created. I do not know much information regarding the 17 children but I have been trying to piece it together.

If possible, take a look at the "Howard Tree" and I should have your parents under Ed Virden's children. Please feel free to email me directly at tjmac_55@yahoo.com.

Regards,

Tami

Hi, I read your message from Ancestry.com regarding Virdin's in GA. I am doing similar research however the families are different from the info you provided. My family is African American and Indian. My request to you is please share any information you find regarding Virdins owning slaves in GA would be appreciated. As I am sure you can understand it is difficult to research with that type of background. I can only go back as far as 1860 around Pike County GA with William Henry Verden.
Thanks!

Thanks for posting this old 'acorn.' Old 'Hence' was my GG grandfather and John my greatuncle (b. 1900, incidentally). Have heard this story more than once before and always suspected source was Uncle John. Anyway, only about half of the tale is true, despite the title of the book. Nevertheless, thanks again for posting it here. Anyone wanting 'the rest of the story,' as Paul Harvey would say, feel free to respond.

Sergeant Henderson Virden, Civil War

Sergeant Henderson Virden of the 2nd Arkansas went to war at the advanced age of twenty-five, and for a year had no word from his wife and children, back in Pea Ridge. In March, 1862, he found himself marching through familiar country, and was soon fighting across his own farm in the battle of Pea Ridge, or Elkhorn Tavern.

Virden was wounded and carried into his own house, where his wife tended him until he could return to his regiment. During his convalescence Mrs. Virden conceived a son, Wiley, who became the father of eight children. The youngest of this thrid generation, Colonel John M. Virden, was in 1960, as the Centennial of the war approached, one of the country's most devout Confederates, and an editor of military service newspapers in Washington, D.C., after a wartime career with Claire Chenault's Flying Tigers and a hitch as press-relations man for General Eisenhower at SHAPE headquarters in Paris.

Grandpa Virden lived to be ninety-three, with a Yankee minie ball under the skin of his back and a huge white scar on his chest.

From the book "The Civil War: Strange & Fascinating Facts", page 138-139, by Burke Davis.

Hi, Donna. This is amazing. Just today, I posted a reply to you in the Garfield co Washington board. Pertaining to Deulen. Yes, I have some info on the Johnson line. Mollie Johnson was my aunt. Kendal is the greatgranddaughter. I know that uncle Kay Johnson was born in Edgar co. Illinois about 1897. I understand he was an only child. He was related to a Carr family. He traveled east & found my aunt here in Ohio. They had 5 children. Other than that, I'd have to call & ask cousin. Easy to do. I'm not sure if Kendal is still on line.
Maxine

Hi, Donna. I do not recognize the other names you mention at all. But, my Maddocks came from England in 1850s to northern Ohio. So that will not connect. Cousin told me that his Dad was born in a county in southern Illinois, I think Johnson co. And he believes that before that his Johnsons were from New England. I seem to be not very useful on the Johnson line. Maxine

Yes, Rosemary Deulen. In the beginning, none of us were sure how to spell Deulen. Kendal is granddaughter of my cousin & just getting started in this. Rosemary was married to Robert Watts of Peoria & passed away in 1984, I believe.
Maxine

I am trying to locate there parents and siblings. I am guess that William & Elizabeth are William's parents. I am having a hard time locating Elizabeth and Patience parents. I have William and Patience children as: 1. Frances M Virden, Nancy T Virden, Julia Virden, Mary E Virden, Priscillia Virden, John J Virden, Susan Virden. I have a Emma, I am guessing from Patience 2nd husband. I have her living with a R Eubanks in 1870 in Cleburne County, Alabama. I am from Frances M Virden's line she married a Samuel Mack York 3 March 1878 in Cleburne County, Alabama. If any one has any information would you please give me names and dates, and I will do the searching my self. Thanks for you help.

Thanks
Kristi

Ross Virden - Zanesville Ohio > Mt. Pleasant, Iowa

This article appeared in The Zanesville Times Recorder, Zanesville, Ohio, December 25, 1924.

George E. Virden of 1037 Bonnie Beach Place, Los Angeles, Calif. wishes to know about his ancestors who at one time lived in or near Zanesville and their descendents.
He states that his grandfather's name was ROSS VIRDEN, and was born at Zanesville on Jan 12, 1831. Ross Virden's wifes maiden name was EMILY SPRY, who was born at Zanesville on Nov. 7, 1833.
When Ross Virden was two years old his father died, Emily Spry Virden's father, John Spry, was auditor at Zanesville, writes Mr. Virden for 21 years. His letter continues:
"Ross Virden and Emily Spry were married at Zanesville, Jan 12, 1852 and they later moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa where both of them spent the rest of their lives and where both are buried. Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, is still the home of their children and grandchildren. I am a grandson of Ross Virden, but at present live in Los Angeles, Calif.
"There are a number of Virdens living in California and I want to know more of the early family if it is possible for you to locate anyone in your city who remembers any of either of these families. I am interested in also joining the Sons of the American Revolution and my sister desired to become a member of the D. A. R. and in order to present an application we must know more of the family history."
The foregoing letter was addressed to "The Secretary of the Masonic Lodge, Zanesville, Ohio" and came into the hands of W. E. Stockdale, secretary of Amity lodge, who found in lodge records this and this only relating to the Virden's.
"Lewis Virden, member lodge of Amity No. 5, F. & A. M. Initiated Feb. 27, 1817; membership ceased May 15, 1829." What Times Recorder reader can throw further light on the question of George Virden?
