Elizabeth Virtue

I am looking for information on my great grandmother Elizabeth Virtue. She was born in New Brunswick, Canada and married William S. Kelley in Sandown New Hampshire in 1895. They divorced in 1909. She married George Robinson in 1909/1910. She died in Newton, Mass. I know Elizabeth and George Robinson had five children Roy, Arthur, Gladis, Hazel and Louise. I do not have any information as to date of birth for Elizabeth or parents names. The only thing I have for parents is father: S. J. Virtue. Any assistance in tracking down this information would be greatly appreciated.

It was interesting getting your message. George C. Virtue was the brother of the Virtue I am related to, Francis Virtue. There father was John Virtue b. 1761. I don't know much about John. I do know that George C and Helen had 4 children. If you are interested I can give you a little more information about his family.

so what other earlier information of the Virtue families do you also have?

I have my ancestors information from a Will in 1823
from that I gleaned information of the family he left in Scotland...namely his sisters
through ancestry I found some information on his sisters
but never any mention of their parents
only one general search that the father at the time of Daniel's death in 1823 resided on Choicelee farm?

I think the name of the parents would come about if I can find any reference of the children's birth or rather baptism

here is my email.. dkbvc@msn.com

I don't know who owned the Choicelee farm. My Hastie ancestors were farm workers & Georgina Virtue's husband was raised on the farm. Polwarth Village, the original settlement of Virtues, is just 2 or three miles from Choicelee. To find a report of the Huguenot Refugees at Polwarth check htttp:qconline.com/~virtue/villagepolwart.htm
Suggest you contact the Polwarth Church cemetery records for help or the Gavington Church cemetery records in
Langton, Berwickshire. My Hastie accestors who lived at Choicelee are buried there. Also, you might contact the owners of other Virtue trees that contain the names I mentioned in my previous reply.

Wow so could it be a coincidence that Georgina is living on the same farm as my ancestor?
Was this farm owned by Virtues or their relatives?
Is Berwick densely populated with Virtues that they are more closely related?
If so then could my ancestor b.abt.1753 or before be a brother of Robert Virtue m to Helen MacDougal?
Guess then this will make him Georgina's GrandUncle?

If I could somehow know the contents of the case with my ancestor Daniel and his inheritors it may bring more conclusive case as to whom he was the son of.
And I have only seen one hint of it when his death was announced or rather recorded that his father in 1823 lived on Choicelee Farm

I have not found any records of his birth also.
But it may be that it could be recorded under another name like Varty or the other variations

Re: Virtue/Vertie in Berwickshire, Scotland

My great grandmother Georgina Janet Virtue was living with her husband, Alexander Hastie, in 1851 on the Choicelee farm in Langton Parish, Berwickshire, Scotland. She is the daughter of Samuel George Virtue (or Vertue) and Janet Wilson. Samuel died the day she was born, 02 Feb 1828. In the 1841 census, she is living w/James and Agnes Virtue in Polwarth village, which is a short distance from Choicelee. James is probably Samuel's brother. Polwarth village is the original settlement of Virtues who fled religious persecution (from Belgium? in the 1500s). Georgina had 2 sisters, Mary, who with her husband, Thomas Hay went to Australia, and Helen, who with her husband, Hugh McDonald, remained in Scotland. I have contacted a descendant of Helen's who still lives in Scotland. I suspect that Samuel's parents are Robert Virtue and Helen McDougal. If so, his siblings may have been Alexander, 1775, Christian,1777, John, 1782, James 1785, Robert, 1786, George, 1794, & Helen, 1798. Samuel's birth is unknown (probably late 1790's). Due to a fire, early Polwarth records are scarce. I hope this has been of some help to you. I have a little more early information about Virtues if you are interested.

I have just located Rachel J. Mills Virtue's burial location and date. She was buried at Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, Knox Co., Illinois, on 16 May 1905. Here is the cemetery info URL: http://www.ci.galesburg.il.us/cemetery
Perhaps they can give you more info. Or you can look for an obit. Her husband, Samuel M. Virtue, was buried near her on 06 Oct 1907, although they were separated by 1900. He was listed as married and living in Fulton Co., IL, but she was listed as a widow living in Knox Co., IL, on the 1900 census.

No, I do not think so. At least, for the moment, I do not have any Clayton MILLS anywhere listed.
Also do not see him on rootsweb or gencircles either.
On www.familysearch.org are several William M's but not of the right time frame. Nor place.
Wil have to check further for this family. Might be just one not researched as thoroughly as others.

Thank you.
Will list them, if okay, on my MISC MILLS with Rachel's VIRTUE family line.
Maybe done the line can learn more.

Pat
cw
Sorry, Pat, I haven't researched Rachel's parents. According to the 1900 census (Knox Co., IL), Rachel's father was born in TN and her mother was born in IN. My best guess for them would be Joseph MILLS (b abt 1816 TN) and his wife Sarah (b abt 1821 IN) who were listed on the 1850 census in Henderson Co., IL. Listed with Joseph & Sarah were 4 children: Clayton A. (b abt 1842 IN), William M. (b abt 1844 IN), Rachel J. (b abt 1846 IN), & Jonathan (b 1849 IL). Does your MILLS family connect with this one?

photographs

Hi,
I have some old photographs that I can't identify. They are either Virtues, Scotts or Strutts. My GGG Grandfather was Robert Virtue, his daughter Ann was my GG Grandmother and her daughter Elizabeth Rebecca was my G Grandmother. Now these could either be Virtues, Scotts or Strutts. I just need help identifing them. There is a group pic. It has an older man with moustache and three young ladies and young man. One of the young ladies resembles my grandmother so know they are related. This one was taken in Oshawa at Putney's studio on King Street, and I know that some Virtues lived in Oshawa. So thought maybe they might be Virtues. I'm also posting on the Strutt and Scott board. The single small pics of the ladies were taken in Bowmanville. The other larger pic of a lady was taken in Toronto.
Any help would be appreciated. May be we can find these ladies a home.
Thank you
Lillian Arends

Dear Sydney, I can trace my family back to William Virtue, born around 1805 in PA. My granfather was Julian Virtue, born to Curtis Morey Virtue. My great aunt and uncle both mentione Samuel as their grandfather, and also mention his siblings. I am stuck at who William's fther is, but seem to be coming to the same conclusion as you are! Have you been able to find anything more on Samuel? My family and I plan to travel to Ireland and COrnwall this fall to look for records, etc. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!
Regards, Kathy Virtue

Hello Richard, I'm not at home just now so am without my papers. However I do believe the Mary Virtue you refer to is my great grandmother who was known as Polly and married Jackson Craig in 1905 in Gateshead area. It took me a long time to track her birth record down due to various spellings of her surname. The family name from 1820s is given as Virty/Virtie. On 1881 onwards it is noted as Varty, but my Mary born in 1887 is recorded on birth cert as Virtue, which by time of marriage and death cert has become Varty.
