It's been a few years since you originally posted this inquiry so I'm unsure if you've found any information or not.

However, my great great grandparents were Frank and Josephine Vitt from Fostoria (Seneca), Ohio. They were born in Northern France and so were their parents. The surname, itself, is Germanic-Saxon. Their daughter, Mary, was my great grandmother.

If you need any other information, please contact me.

This may be my great grandfather. I have some information that comes from my mother (now deceased) about Edward Vitt who was born in Germany (Hamburg or Bremen) & came here as a child, or was born on Staten Island. His father had a grocery store on the green in Stapleton. He had several brothers & sisters. He enlisted in the Civil War in a California regiment, although he enlisted from New York. He was later a translator at the immigration station at Castle Garden. He died in 1890 & is buried in Silver Mount Cemetery. He was married to Katheryn Burke who died in 1936.

My wife's grandfather Josef Sylvester Vit(t) was from Ostrava, Moravia, Bohemia. He arrived in NY in 1910 and settled in Chicago. Several family members joined him there. It seems that Chicago already had a sizable population of Vit/Vitts, but I don't know if they were related. I'm happy to share what information I have and am always looking for more.

Josef and his family seemed to use Vit or Vitt at various times. My father-in-law's belief is that the name was not a contraction from a longer one.

BOOK: My Story by Erwin L. Trautwein, son of Emma VITT and Herman R. Trautwein

I bought the above book about Erwin L. Trautwein, son of Emma VITT and Herman R. Trautwein, born in Champion City, Missouri, eight miles south of Gerald, MO. Erwin married three times, I believe. He married Mamie Wright,Hilda Schwartz Farrar, and Betty Wheeler. In the 1910 Census, Erwin was enumerated with parents and brothers John G. and Henry R. plus sister Selma L. Erwin worked for Pevely Dairy as a clerk, a school teacher, and as principal in the Lindbergh School District in ST. Louis County, MO. Erwin died July 11, 1918 in Columbia, Boone Cty, MO. In the book there is a picture of the six Trautwein boys. I don't know if it is Erwin and brothers. He also mentions he had an Uncle Julius Trautwein. I don't believe Erwin had any children of his own. I would like to connect this book to a family member or family researcher. Please contact Kathy@craftsbykathy.com if you have an interest in this book. Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
Re: Vitt, Vitte

My fiance', has Vitt's from Fostoria. However what we have is sketchy because I've just started researching his line. He believe's his Vitt's may have changed from Vitte however census records I've found (so far) aren't showing that.

His line:

Ronald Joseph Vitt b. 8 sept 1942, Ohio son of Charles Augustus Vitt b. abt 1912 Senica, OH. d. abt 1982 Fostoria, OH. (m. Velma Freede b. abt 1913 d. 1982)
son of Augustus Victor Vitt b. abt 1883, France d. 1958, Bowling Green, OH. (place of res. Hancock, OH)
According to 1920 Senica, Ohio Census Augusta's wife was Cleo Ethel Vitt.

According to my partner, it was assumed that Ronald was adopted by his father, Charles. Also he was told the surname Murphy is somehow connected to this. However, according to Charles A.'s WWII draft record in 1942 he was single with dependents.

This causes me to wonder if Charles was actually widowed and his dependant was son Ronald.

I have combed through Ancestery and Geneology.com without results so far. Any suggestions, or possible connections would be great!

Thanks,
Vicki

Re: Vitt Family Name

I am helping my cousin conduct research on her family line, her name was Susan Matthies from Chicago, Cook Co., Ill. According to Susie, her father's mother was Mae or May Vitt shortened from Vitovec. Mae's parents were Thomas Vitovec born 1849 and died 28 Dec 1932 who married Anna Zobel in 1864 and died 29 Oct 1932. They had 7 sons and 2 daughters. John, Frank, Anton Vitovec, Louis Vitt (a doctor), Tom, Joe, Ed, Rose and Mae Vitt. They emigrated from the Czech Republic. Fact or Fiction: Mae Vitt Matthies told a family secret about her family before she died. Apparently she was of royal blood, as she stated the Franz Joseph (1830-1916) who was crowned Emperor of Austria in 1848 and Ding of Hungary in 1867. May have been Susie's great grandfather. Her great grandmother was his champbermaid. Interesting.

My Vitt family headed by Verena Vitt (she had my great grandfather, Silvester Vitt, illegitimately) came to this country in 1869. However, Verena Vitt had a brother Matheus Vitt who came to the U.S. around 1865 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. He had a daughter Teresa who never married and a son Joseph. I do not know what became of this Joseph Vitt. Our family has a vague tradition that this son may have become a baseball player on some team. Hope this helps your research.

Roy Vitt in 1920's New Orleans

My grandmother, Ernestine Janin Cronan, married a Roy Vitt in New Orleans in the 1920's. They had no children. My mother, Eileen Cronan Drewes, told us what a nice stepfather he was. Roy left New Orleans in the late 1920's or early 1930's looking for work and never returned. Grandma divorced him in 1950. Going through my mother's papers recently I found some work reference letters for Roy Vitt as a dragline/construction industry worker. If you are related, I would be willing to send you the letters. My address is 5905 Bellingham Place, Metairie LA, 70003 and my phone is (504)0734-7954. I'd like to know what happened to my stepgrandfather after he left N.O.
