Mariah Viteto remained in TN when her husband Enoch Carter fled after killing a relative. She and Enoch had bought land adjacent to Mariah's father, William Viteto (many spellings found)and upon William's death, the couple had bought-out the land of some of the other heirs of William Viteto. She found herself in a court battle to defend her homestead and acreage against the widow and children of the slain Carter relative, and Court records remain to this day (prob. Jackson County, TN). Later, son James Viteto Carter and his wife, Nanny Samples Carter left on a wagon train with Sarah Carter and some others (probably their children George Washington "Wash" Carter and son Rice Carter, and possibly a third son Enoch Carter). They were looking for James' father, but he was never found. They travelled first to Conejo, Colorado where one child died, and after a brief occupancy (3 years or so), was headed back East and ventured thru Indian Territory where lived cousin Polk Carter. He persuaded them to stay, and they settled the region of present day Carter's Landing in now Oklahoma, Cherokee County. I am seeking more information on Mariah Viteto, her father William Viteto and mother.
