Hello, don't know if this is any help to you, I am assuming you may be in England, if so, there are origins of this name in Armagh, Northern Ireland. I know of an Edward Vize who was perhaps a Justice of the Peace or his father was? My knowledge is very limited. My grandmother worked at the Vize residence as a Housekeeper in the early 40's during the war, apparently this is a most beautiful part of Ulster, it borders on to the south.
I hope this is of some use in your research, Nellie.

I am an American Vize of Irish descent. There are Vizes throughout the USA -- I am related to only a small portion of them. My family tree extends back to John Vize of Donegal, Co. Tipperary who married a Mary Anderson in 1731.

It is possible that we may have lineage extending from the French Huguenots fleeing persecution.

I am under the impression that all Vize's are in fact related however I believe the ancestry hails from German decent...? Either way wish you all the best in your search... Dan Vize

Vize Family: Ancestors of Edward H Vize (ob. 22.2.1904)

I married into the Vize family and have long had an interest in geneology. I am West Indian and can only trace my family tree back to slavery (1830's), so it is great being able to trace the Vize family back further than this. I have recently been trying to trace my husband's family on behalf of my son who is doing a family history project at school. We have got back as far as Edward H Vize, his 3rd great grandfather, father of Charles O'Donnell Vize, who in turn was the father of Cecil Vize, who was the father of Arthur James -- my son's grandfather, now deceased. Can anyone tell me more about Edward H's ancestry? Many thanks.

My grandfather was born at 9 Curzon (Curzen?) St, Dublin on Oct. 10, 1889 and his birth was registered Oct. 23, 1889.

His name was Alfred Edward Vize and his parents were
Charles O'Donnell Vize and Mary Jane O'Donnell Vize (formerly Mary Jane Gilmore)
*************************************************************
Stepping back one generation:

Charles O'Donnell Vize is the son of Edward H. Vize and Anne Vize (formerly Tomlinson). He was born in July 1864.

Edward H. and Anne Vize had 12 children:
Joseph E., Elizabeth, William, Edward, John H., Harrietta, Mary C., Charles O'D, Alfred E., Henry, Emily E. & Ester. Henry and Ester appear to have died as infants under 2 months old.

Edward H was married three times:
1st to Harriet Rennick. They married approx 1849, She gave birth to a daughter, Georgina in 1851. I show her death as OB 1851.
2nd to Anne Tomlinson. They married Jan 4, 1853 and death OB Mar 29, 1893
3rd to Sarah Marsh. I do not have a marriage date or OB. No listing of children.

Edward H Vize death OB is listed as Jan 22, 1904
*************************************************************
My distant cousin, William Vize, has posted extensively on this website concerning matters Vize. If you haven't already come across it, it is well worth looking for.
*************************************************************

I have a very old, faded copy of a pedigree starting in 1763. Mid page it skips to 1731.

The first entry (for the 1763 side) is Joseph Vize of Aglis, Co. Cork (d. March 19, 1789) and wife, Bridget Short (vivens 1788)That marriage produced William, of Aglis, Dr John, Joseph of Aglis and Mary Anne.

Under 1731 it indicates a marriage of John Vize of Donegal, Co. Tipperary (approx d. Dec 1779 at Clonmel) to Mary Andersen (d. Sept 1805 aged 98 (stated to be the grandmother of Dr. John Vize of Limerick. This marriage produced Joseph Vize who married in Aug 1757 at Woodroffe -- spouse listed as ..... Jackson.

Joseph Vize and ..... Jackson bore Dr. John Vize of Limerick (grandson of john Vise (sic) of Dunegal) Probate 1829

Dr John Vize married a daughter of Benjamin White of Limerick (no name, no m date. D. March 13, 1794

Dr John Vize and The former Miss White bore Joseph Edward (of Whitehall, Co. Limerick)

Joseph Edward Vize married Mary Hartnett of Sandville, Co. Kerry on July 28, 1819. Miss Hartness was the 2nd daughter of William Hartnett

Joseph Edward and Mary bore a son (no name listed) July 15, 1820 and a 2nd son, Edward bc 1825 d. Feb 22, 1904.

While sort of backward, this brings us back to the Edward Vize I listed earlier in the post. Edward Vize is my gg grandfather.

I hope my post made some sense and helped you somehow.

Unfortunately, I can't e-mail you privately so perhaps you could e-mail me at: jessandrak@netscape.net.

I have some deed and will references regarding a Joseph Vize in Tipperary. I also have a Joseph, (the same one or perhaps the son) who was married to Temperance Jackson in 1757. Temperance descends from the Perry family in Tipperary. They had a son John Vize.

I'd love to hear from you.
Karen

Vize family of Limerick/Tipperary

Until last year, I was a professional genealogist/historian who, due to lack of income, had to revert to a better-paid profession. I spent several months researching the Vize family of Tipperary (my partner's ancestors). I found many property deed memorials from 1708 (viz: copies of the actual deed transactions) in the Irish Registry of Deeds, most of them relating to this family's land in Co Tipperary and properties in Limerick city and Co Clare. I also have a list of Vize and Vyse (surviving) wills and will indexes (original wills unfortunately destroyed in 1922) held in The National Archives, Dublin.

The male forenames in my partner's ancestral Vize family appear always to have been Joseph, John and William. I have hardcopy evidence of a Joseph Vize (my partner's great-grandfather) who was born in Clonmel,Co Tipperary in 1837 (ref: Census of Ireland (Dublin) 1901). This Joseph's older brothers, William and John (born 1826 & 1827) were members of the Royal Irish Constabulary and remained in Ireland. However, it's very likely that they had brothers, uncles and cousins who emigrated to America, Australia, England and Scotland before the Great Famine of 1847.

It would be interesting to get a response to this message -hopefully with some further clues and connections - as I am now unable to carry out full-time research in Irish archives due to being employed in another area.

I have come across a reference to a Benjamin Vize in Co Tipperary who witnesed a will circa 1719 (ref: Abstracts of Irish Wills in the Registry of Deeds, ed. Philimore). He would have been living there in the late 1600s and may or may not have been related to a John Vize (merchant) of Dublin c 1620.

Hi, Darlene,

According to my information, only Walter and Edwin had children. Edwin had 12, to be exact, and three of them married three of my father's cousins. How are you related?

Diane Nishri

I have a mention of the Vize surname in connection with my research into my family. My great-aunt Emily Lyons married Guy Batchelder in 1906. Eventually, they had kids and later grand kids. I don't have names but one of the Batchelders married a Vize.
