It's unlikely that we're closely related. My great-grandfather Henry K Voigt came to Sheboygan County with his parents and two sisters in 1846 when he was four years old, but six years later, he was orphaned when everyone in the family but him, died of cholera. He didn't have many descendants and I know all their names. He originally came from Hannover near the town of Hameln, so if your ancestors came from that area too, then we might be distant cousins.

Wiilhem Voigt was my maternal great great grandfather. He was married to Amelia (Emily) Radtke. They were married in 1878 in Germany and then emigrated to the US.

Martha was one of their daughters. Their son Arthur, Martha's brother, was my great grandfather.

Please email me as I am figuring we are related.

Michelle
tazcoco72@gmail.com

August Voigt passed away Jan. 1933 in St. Louis. I am related to Rosgar Voigt. He was my grandfather. He lived at multiple addresses in St. Louis (Marcus Ave., Hornsby Ave. and Pogamiller (sp?)) and then moved to Virginia. He passed away in the early 1980's. I have an old shaving mug with the barber shop information imprinted on the bottom and Rosgar's picture on the side. I also have old pictures for the 1920's of Marcus Ave., etc. My brother has many older pictures (one of the barber shop). I would like to connect and discuss our family history.

Alfred Voigt - Looking for further info

My grandfather, Alfred Voigt and his family are somewhat of a mystery to me. He ran away from home at 16 from somewhere in Prussia and immigrated to the US in 1905. He later married Margaret Wechel and had two children, my father Alfred E. Voigt and my aunt Margaret. I was hoping someone may be familiar with these names seeing as no one can tell me who his parents were or about the family (my father has passed and my aunt unable to tell me). He was probably born around 1888 or 1889. He ended up working for the US military where he stayed until his retirement. I'm trying to compile a family tree for all the grandkids. I'm just hoping someone is familiar with him and can maybe help me look in the right direction.

It looks like we are 4th cousins through your father Clair, grandparents Joseph Matthias Kuchenberg/Helen Grimm, G-grandparents Joseph Hubbard Kuchenberg/Bertha Gertrude Flesch, GG-grandparents Mathias Kuchenberg/Gertrude Voigt, to GGG-grandparents Johan Theodor Voigt/Maria Agnes Thuernich! Peter Voigt's bio lists my GG-grandmother as Celia Simmerman which should be Zimmerman. At least that is what I have found out through my research and others. I will exchange details via email if you are interested. Heidi

My first husband (Thomas Francis Voigt) was born in Holyoke, MA in 1938. His father was Max Howard Voigt, who was born 1914 in Massachusetts, whose father, Otto Voigt was born in Saxony, Germany in 1888. Otto's parents were also from Saxony, Germany. Max's mother was Pauline (I do not know here maiden name.) Pauline was born in Massachusetts; however, both of her parents were from Saxony, Germany.

Max had two sisters: Helen G. Voigt, born approx 1911; and Lillian S. Voigt, born approximately 1916.

Max had two other children besides my husband, Thomas. They are Gustav C. Voigt, born approx 1934 in MA; and Paula (A.?) Voigt, born approx 1936 in MA.

Since my husband, Thomas, died in an automobile accident at the tender age of 18, I do not know much more about the family.

I hope this information may be useful to you in some manner. If you have any questions, you may contact me.

My ancestor, Christian Vogt (Voigt) was born in Oderbruch, Koenigreich, Prusia in 1820. He settled in Lebanon, Dodge County area. He was married to Henriette Louise Uttech, from Trachel, Brandenbrug, Prussia in 1846. They had twelve chidren between 1847 & 1868. the spelling Vogt was changed to Voigt about 1851. All children were born in Lebanon. They were members of Immanual Lutheran Parrish and/or St Pauls Lutheran Church in Lebanon. At some point they moved to James, South Dakota but am not sure whaat year. I have learned a fair amount about his son Carl born 1851 and married to Wilhelmina Affeldt as he is my great grandfather, but I would like to learn about Christian's siblings and well as his son, Carl's siblings. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone?

I have a relative Gustav A. Voigt who was born in Germany in 1872 and died in the Methodist Home in Lawrenceburg, IL in 1961. From any records I have he and his wife had no children. They are buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Richland Co., IL. He was a farmer. It doesn't sound like this will be of any help.

Was the brother of my gggrandmother, Mathilde Grams.

In article from the Eau Claire Free Press, November 15, 1899, Theodor Voigt tried to stand bail for Altoona's City Marshall (his step-son) who had been arrested for burglarizing a tavern, but was denied. Here is the article:

MARSHAL, H. J. SHILLING AND E. MILLER CHARGED WITH BURGLARY GET BONDS. SHILLING'S ATTORNEY TAKES THE MATTER TO JUDGE VINJE ON BEING REFUSED BY JUSTICE.

Yesterday Messrs . Wtekham & Farr, attorneys for H. J. Shilling, Altoona's city marshal charged with burglarizing Edward Boyle’s saloon, appeared before Justice N. C. Wilcox and asked that their client be released on bail in the sum of $500. They offered as surities Shilling's brother, Carl and his stepfather, Theo. Voigt, both of the Town of Washington.. After consulting with District Attorney De Alton Thomas, Justice Wilcox declined to accept the surities offered. Last night Messirs. Wtckham & Farr appeared, before Judge Vjnje in the circuit court, accompanied by Theo. Voigt and Carl Shilling, the prospective surities, and asked to have their bonds accepted and Marshal Shilling released. His honor swore both of the men, and then questioned them closely regarding their qualifications to give bonds. Judge Vinje decided to accept them. .In speaking of the matter while still on tho bench, his honor, commend of the action of the district attorneys and the justice in not taking the responsibility of releasing the prisoners. He said they were right In pursuing the course they did. Shilling was released last night. His case will be heard on Nov. 22.

Attorneys Bartlett & O'Leary appeared before Justice Wilcox yesterday afternoon and offered bonds in the sum of $500 for the release of Miller. Shilling's alleged accomplice. L. P. Hotchkiss and Alderman Frank Gregolre went on Miller's bonds.

They wore accepted and Miller was released. His case comes up on Nov. 23.
If anyone has information on the Voigts of Eau Claire or Fall Creek Wisconsin I would really like to know what you have.

My mother was born over 50 years after my gggrandmother Mathilde Voigt was divorced, and about 15 years after she died, but still condemned her, the bad blood was that bad. Needless to say, I never knew anyone from that side of the family, and all that I've gotten has been from cemetary records, church records, census records, newspaper articles, and court files, so would really appreciate knowing more.

I of course would be quite happy to share what information I do have.

Cheers,

Andrea Olmanson

Mathilde Voigt Grams, August Grams, Anna Louise Grams, Wilhelm Anklamm, and scandalous divorce and paternity story

Hope this scandalous story can provide entertainment and insight for someone.

August Grams and Mathilde Voight (married names Grams and Paul), both born in Posen, Prussia, and who both died in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, were my great great grandparents.

They divorced July 1, 1889. Eight and one half months later Mathilde had a baby named Anna Louise Grams.

The baptismal records pertaining to Anna Louise Grams say that her parents were Mathilde (Voigt) Grams and August Grams. They are online here:

http://users.rootsweb.com/~wieaucla/Stjamesbaptism2.htm

Anne Louise was born 8.5 months after her named parents' divorce. It is most probable, though not certain, that August was NOT her biological father.

Interestingly enough, Anna Louise Grams was baptized at St. James Lutheran Church in Fall Creek, not St. John's in rural Fall Creek where both of Mathilde and August's other children were baptized, where Mathilde and August's daughter Augusta is buried and where Mathilde herself is buried. However, August had divorced Mathilde for adultery with one William Anklum (the divorce records incorrectly spell his name, it was correctly Wilhelm Anklamm) on July 1, 1889.

So Anna Louise would have been conceived at almost the end of August's marriage with Mathilde, but one does not know who the father was, if his allegations are true (and they probably were; when Mathilde later remarried a Gustav Adolph Paul on May 20, 1892, she had a baby 2 months later on July 8, 1829).

The newspapers of the time (1889) report that August had, early in 1889, filed for divorce from Mathilde, and Mathilde had counterclaimed, alleging cruel treatment(pushing her from a moving wagon, throwing a medicine bottle at her head). They then purportedly reconciled, but then August sneakily got a divorce without Mathilde knowing in July 1889, the newspapers reported that August had sneakily been courting a rich German widow (not named) and that Mathilde had no idea that was going on, and had no idea that August had sneakily divorced her.

I got the divorce file from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Special Collections archive, and looking at the documents, I realized that none other than August Grams's brother-in-law, August Patzvold, had purportedly done the
service of process, and that Mathilde did not appear or file any sort of answer.

I also read an affidavit (called a deposition in 1889, but same thing as what we now call an affidavit) signed by August Potzvold, calling Mathilde a "big, lazy, good for nothing woman" and seriously condemning her for the affair, for not cooking her husband's meals since January, and for running around with Wilhelm Anklamm (erroneously spelled William Anklum in the papers). Putting 2 and 2 together, it is probable that there was collusion between the 2 Augusts, and that August Potzvold never actually served the Summons on Mathilde. If Mathilde was living with August Grams as his wife up to the time of the divorce, unwitting of the fact that he was secretly divorcing her in favor of a rich German widow, and if, going by Anna Louise's date of birth, Anna Louise was conceived on or about June 24 1889, then either August Grams or Wilhelm Anklamm(or someone else for all I know) could have been Anna Louise's father.

At any rate, the July 1, 1889 divorce judgment gave August Grams all of the parties' property, plus sole care and custody of the daughter that he and Mathilda had together, that being the nine-year-old Amelia (my great grandmother) who would be a biological half-sister to Anna Louise. So all that Mathilda would have been given in the divorce judgment were the clothes on her back. The later newspaper reports on the matter say that she didn't speak any English and had no idea that her husband was divorcing her.

There was some newspaper article suggesting that she had grounds to reopen the judgment of divorce because she hadn't been given proper notice, but the UWEC archives don't have any records to that effect. It's not surprising that given the fact that the divorce court stripped her of everything she owned, she had to give the subsequently-born child away to others to raise.

The later census records show that Anna Louise was not living with either August or Mathilde.

In the 1905 Wisconsin state census, Anna was living with Emma and Herman Kromrey (incorrectly spelled Kumery in the census records). Emma Kromrey was initially Emma Rihlmann or Tuhlmann (I think Rihlmann), who first was married to Wilhelm Voigt (their marriage was on December 7, 1890), whom I believe to be one of Mathilde's brothers. Emma and Wilhelm had at least 2 kids, Walter and Fred, Wilhelm died, and Emma then remarried, to Herman Kromrey, on December 4, 1903.

To make things more confusing, Herman had first been married to Emma Kuhnert, on December 26, 1891.

The 1905 Wisconsin state census identifies Anna's mother's name as Emma; presumably Emma was raising Anna as her own daughter, although there was no actual, formal adoption as far as I can figure out.

The 1895 Wisconsin State Census only lists the man's last name. It says that in the Wm. Voigt household in the Town of Lincoln, Eau Claire County, there were 2 males and 2 females. The 2 females would have been Emma (Wm's wife) and the then 5-year-old Anna. The 2 males would have been Wm, and then Wm and Emma's new baby son, Fred. It also identifies 3 household members as being born in the
US, and 1 in Germany (this would have been Wilhelm Voigt).

As for Anna Louise's possible father Wilhelm Anklamm, he was a German immigrant farmer who also lived in rural Fall Creek and at least up to the point of his affair with Mathilde, it allears that he attended the St. John Lutheran Church where August and Mathilde also attended. He married his first wife, Louise Schmidt, on December 26, 1879. Louise died of dysentery on August 8, 1888, 5 months prior to Wilhelm getting involved with Mathilde (according to the divorce records she'd started carrying on with Wilhelm in January 1889). Also, Wilhelm and Louise's 4-month-old baby boy, Otto, died of cholera on September 22, 1889, only 4 months before he got involved with Mathilde. But at any rate, he had the affair with Mathilde, but did not marry her; he married an Ernstein Klawitter on September 18, 1894 at St. James Lutheran Church in Fall Creek (same church where Anna Louise was baptized). I don't have any evidence that Wilhelm Anklamm played any role in Anna Louise's life.

Wilhelm's parents were August Anklamm born August 29, 1822 died October 7, 1889, and buried at St. James Lutheran at Fall Creek. His mother Was named Julianne. I *think* that Julianne was buried at the Trinity Cemetery in Fall Creek.

In 1892, Mathilde Voigt was remarried a Gustav Adolph Paul, who was recently widowed himself the prior year, and who had lost 6 of his 7 children to various childhood illnesses over the past decade. His late wife and his deceased children are also buried in the St. John's cemetery. Mathilda and Gustav went on to have 3 more kids. It appears from the census records that after Gustav's
death, Mathilde raised the three children she'd had with Gustav, plus his surviving child from his first marriage.

I recall that when I was growing up in Eau Claire and visiting my grandmother, Grace (Brown) Dole (daughter of Amelia (Grams) Brown), on Jefferson Street, people would once in a while talk about Great Aunt Annie. However, people were also quite funny about things (not in the ha ha sense) and nobody would quite explain the connecton and I don't recall ever visiting her. I always got the sense that there was some sort of family secret going on, and now I have a better idea of what it was.

Andrea Olmanson

Hi Craig,
I do believe that my grandfather, Albert John Voigt aka John Albert Voigt's fathers name was Theodore. His mothers name was Margaret. (I'm not sure of the spellings) They supposedly had 15 children, 13 of whom survived infancy, possibly chidhood. I don't know any of their names except I do believe there was a Bessie or Bertha, a George. They lived in both NYC and NJ. I do know that my grandfather was possibly the youngest surviving child of Theodore? and Margaret.

I hope that someone has information about these two Voigt brothers who came to the United States around 1865 from Prussia and who used to be the VonVoigt's.
The stories passed down in our family say that they descended from the von Voigt's of Prussian nobility.

As far back as i can trace the family is to Theodore C. Voigt (born abt 1845) and his brother Edward (born abt 1848) in Prussia and came over to the USA around 1865
Theodore settled in New York City and i'm not sure where Edward went or anything more about Edward.

Theodore Voigt married Clara E. had 7 children in New York City / New Jersey area :

Edward A.
Any info on Gustov C. Voigt--ILL or IA

I am looking for any info on my G-grandfather Gustov C. Voigt. My mothers maiden name was Voight. Her father changed the spelling before she was born in 1939. She loved her grandfather very much and was close to him. But I cant find out any records for him. The last thing my mother knew about him that he might be from Germany. He lived in IL. when my mother was small. He might of lived in IA for a while because my gradfather was born in State Center Iowa on March 1907. I need to know where Gustov or Gustav Voight was born, married,or any other censes records. I even tried Genweb but nothing showed up. I even tried my grandfathers siblings and nothing much came up. My mother has very little info on her parents past. If anyone can help it would be kindly appreciated.
Thank you. Kelly

I have no idea who his siblings and parents names and dates but I do have Gustov's wife and all their children which 1 of them is my grandfather. Gustov was married to Martha Wilke. They must of have had most of their children in Iowa because my grandfather Gilbert Voigt was born in State Center IA. They must of moved to ILL sometime in the 1930's. Gustov's children were--Cordelia, Elmer, Fern, Lena (Lorna?),Mabel, then Gilbert(my grandfather). I know they lived in Ill when my mother was little. It was around the suburbs of Chicago. My grandparents moved to Wisconsin in the early 1970's. That is were my grandfather died, in Wisconsin Dells. I think my mother was very young when her grandfather died(Gustov). Might of been in the 1940's. My grandfather Gilbert Voigt married Katherine Therry from Racine,Wi. That is my grandmother. Also my Grandfather was married to a german woman before my grandmother. They had 1 son in N.Y. They divorced in the 1930's and his ex-wife took their son and moved to Germany. He still lives there today. I just need any kind of help with Gustov Voigt and his parents and brothers and sisters if any. Im sure they probably came from Germany. Any help I would greatly apprciate. Thank you, Kelly

My maternal grandmother was Alma Millie Clara Voigt and her father was Karl (Carl) Ernst Voigt, born in Germany in 1825. The information I have shows that he came to America in 1859. I have much Voigt family tree but cannot get beyond Karl to find his parents in Germany. Karl was married to Fredericka Kannenberg. Karl died in 1922 in Cambridge, WI and Fredericka died in 1916 in Lake Mills, WI.

I have many of the family members down from Karl.

Many of my Voigt relatives were born in Lake Mills, WI
Ammendment: At least, I'm assuming Charles is Philip's father, because Charles Voigt's name is on the pre-printed letterhead as mentioned above, but it's possible that Charles was a family member other than the father. The signature line says it's from "Dad" and doesn't actually state his name.

Found a letter from Charles Voigt to his son Lt Philip F Voigt dated 1942. It's typed on stationary from the Republican Party of Sheboygan County which lists Charles Voigt as chairman and also lists the other members of the club.

The letter was found during the closing of a Long Beach CA hotel. Thought I'd check to see if there are any family members out there who might belong to this letter, it needs a home.

~Kelly
