Sarah Ann Voorhes, d. of Cornilius Chapman Voorhes, was married to a Hopkins before she married Charles Smith. She signed a document for a civil war pension that she was married to Charles Smith. Her declaration was verified by her brother and sign in law. I have Charles' father and sibblings if anyone is interested.
Sarah Ann Voorhes & Charles Smith

Charles Smith and Sarah Ann Voorhes were my great grand parents. Charles father was Joseph Smith and mother Catherine ?. I found the Hawkins marriage to Sarah was probably a first marriage. Sarah signed a civil war pension affidavit that she was married to Charles, never devorced from him. Witnesses swore the same. Also I have the connection of Sarah's parents all the way back to when they came over from Holland. That info was provided by the Van Voorhes Association and is a recent discovery. Here is what I know about Joseph and Charles:

JOSEPH H. SMITH b. abt 1803. Married to CATHARINE ? b. abt 1806. Found in and around Ohio Valley area (Pa., WV., Ohio) Found in Monroe Co., Salam Twp, Ohio in 1850 census. Joseph born in VA and Catherine born in OH., children born in VA probably present day WVA. 1870 Census, Wetzel Co., WV lists Francis Catherine as head of household. Francis found in home of Lee Jackson and Mary in the Wetzel Co. 1880 census so probably died bet. 1880-1890.. Joseph died bet. 1870-1880.

Children: SARAH b. 1-18-1827 m. William Cain
CHARLES b. abt 1831 in Clarington, Monroe Co., OH m. SARAH ANN VOORHES
MARY b.
KINSEY b. abt 1837
MARGARET b. abt 1840
JOHN b. abt 1842
CATHARINE b. abt 1846
CHARLES SMITH b. abt 1831 in Clarington, Ohio and SARAH ANN VOORHES b. Nov. 28, 1831. Charles served in Civil War ( Company A 25th Ohio IV). Found in and around Ohio Valley area. Died December 02, 1910, Borland, Pleasants Co., WV or might have died in Eureka. Mentioned not only in Monroe Co. Ohio also in Wetzel, Woods, Jackson Pleasant Co.’s WV. 1870 census finds them living in Magnolia Township, Wetzel Co. 1880 census finds them living in Jackson Co., Grant District, WV. Children:
JOSEPH SMITH b. 7-7-1853 d. 6-21-1930 m. Marty Atkins
ABIGAIL SMITH b. 9-15-1855 m. Henry Hubbs b. 8-1854 d. 4-18-1911
CORNELIUS CHAPMAN SMITH b. Wood Co., WV 11-28-1856 m.
Ann,
I'll be glad to let you know what I find. Is there antything special you would like me to look for?

I do have the will of Albert Voorhes. Dated 24 Sept 1867. His estate is left to his wife Catherine during her lifetime along with one hundred dollars each to his son John and daughter Sarah Ann Hawkins. After Catherine's death, half of the estate is left to his grandson Mariam Bramhall (Not positive on the spelling of his first name, writing is hard to read. He is the son of John P. Bramhall & Eliza Jane Voorhes) and the other half divided between Albert's children. Sarah Hawkins is executor, James & Christoper Sutton are witnesses. Will went to probate 26 July 1877.

Albert & Catherine are buried in Elizabethtown Cemetery, Guernsey Co., OH

Kelly

Kelly, when you get to the Guernsey County Library, would you please let me know what you find, so that we at the Van Voorhees Assn. can be sure that we have this Voorhes lineage straight. We had some correspondence last year with the genealogy librarian there, but I now forget how that went.

Ann
VoorhiesAnn@AOL.com

Hi Kim,
I am also researching the Voorhees /Hawkins line.
I looked up your Mary Rebecca Walters on the Family Search Labs Site and located her death certificate. It states her parents are Lasha Hawkins & Catherine Waddel. The informant is John Walters. I think that the mother may be incorrect since Elisha Hawkins & Catherine Waddel didn't marry until 1868. I believe your Mary is actually the daughter of Elisha Hawkins & Sarah Voorhes. Sarah is the daughter of Albert & Catherine Holtz Voorhes. In the 1870 Census Elisha Hawkins & Catherine Waddel have no children listed, but there is a Mary age 13 living with Albert Voorhes and his daughter Sarah. They all have the last name, Voorhes. Sarah also has a son named John Wesley, b. 1848 and another, Charles b 1860. John's death certificate states his parents are Elahiu Hawkins & Sarrah A. Voorhiss. I also believe Elisha & Sarah have another daughter, Harriet Frances Hawkins Figley(my second great-grandmother) Her name was Hawkins on her marriage certificate, but she is listed as Voorhes on the 1860 census and on a couple of her daughters death certificates. I have also seen her listed as Hawkins on other family records. It could be a possibility that Elisha & Sarah were divorced. I am hoping to make a trip to the Guernsey County Courthouse in the near future. I'll let you know if something turns up.

Kelly
Thanks so much for the Hawkins info. I've tried finding that for years. Sarah married Charles Smith Dec. 30, 1851. So she must have devorced Hawkins before that. In an affidavit filed in 1912 she swears a continuous marriage to Charles from when they were married. She was filing for a civil war widow's pension. Three other affidavits swear to the same. I hope that helps. You can contact me directly at roofbolt@hotmail.com.

I'm seeking clarification on Sarah Ann VOORHES.

FamilySearch IGI Individual Record (Batch No.: M514322)
Elisha HAWKINS m. Sarah Anne VOORHES, 15 Jan 1846, Guernsey, Ohio.

Another FamilySearch.org , IGI Individual Record, (Batch No.: M514323) shows Elisha HAWKINS m. Catherine R. WADDELL, 09 Dec 1868, Guernsey, Ohio.

I found another posting on the Ancestry's Guernsey County, Ohio forum -
"Rus Elisha HAWKINS - indicated to be married to Sarah Ann VOORHES and she is the daughter of Cornelius Chapman VOORHES / VORCE and Grace LINDER. Sarah's 1st husband was Charles SMITH (married in Bellville, Logan County, OH." (Posted by Hugh Smith 10 Feb 2002)

I'm trying to determine who would be my gg-grandmother, either Sarah Ann VOORHES or Catharine R. WADDELL. The daughter is Mary Rebecca HAWKINS (b. 25 May 1856 Guernsey County, OH / d. 22 Jan 1952 Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio / buried: 25 Jan 1952 Buffalo Cemetery; Buffalo, Guernsey County, Ohio). Mary R HAWKINS married Isiah WALTERS abt. 1894 in Guernsey County, OH.

I'm not sure if Elisha/Lasha/Elahiu HAWKINS is the same person with these named above females.

Thanks!

Kim

Sarah Ann Voorhees or Voorhes born 28 Nov 1831 OH, married Charles Smith on 30 Dec 1851 in OH.

Sarah was the daughter of Cornelius Chapman Voorhees (or Voorhes) and Rachel Griselda "Grace" Linder and that family appears in the 1850 census of Belmont Co., OH.

Cornelius Chapman Voorhees born c1800 NJ or WV was the third known son of a C. VanVoorhees of NJ and an unknown spouse most probably surnamed Chapman; to my knowledge we are still seeking that ancestry, but there has been recent research activity by a group of descendants. The Linder ancestry is fairly well documented and is, I believe, online.

If you have Smith children for Sarah Ann Voorhes, I would be very happy to have that information. And thank you for the information on the parentage of Charles Smith!

Ann
VoorhiesAnn@AOL.com

George W. Voorhes married Rebecca Nash, 31 Dec 1877, in Coshocton County, Ohio. Their son George Henry Voorhes was born 7 Dec 1878 in Salem Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio (the next door county). The family appeared in the 1880 census in Bedford, Coshocton County, but I have not found them in any later census. Rebecca Nash's family (James and Lydia Nash and 10 children) lived in Coshocton County, but I have not been able to trace the ancestry of this George W.
