I was so excited to happen upon your question about the Voorhis family from Masonville, NY. My grandmother was Nina Amanda Voorhis and married to Frank Wayne Hull from Sherburne, NY., and her parents, John Voorhis and Cora Jones. I have much info on her siblings and old pictures. Nina and Frank had eight children, two of whom are still living.
Please reply and lets compare notes. I will be glad to provide you with all the info I have.
Hope to hear from you soon.
My email address is leeweant@yahoo.com.

John C. Voorhis was the last known pastor of the True Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, 21 Bank, NYC. I am trying to locate the records of this church that died out in the early 1920s. Does anyone have any additional information about this man or where he lived after 1922/23?

Sorry for the delay, did not know you had responded, I did not receive any notice by email for your response! My Samuel Beaty married an Elizabeth Heith in Butler County. However my Voorhis family is from Warren County....how odd, it is possible that these are all linked but I am not sure how! good luck to you on your searching!

Thank you so much for this information, I did notice the 1860 and 1870 census that you are mentioning, and I intend to follow that lead. I hadn't tried searching the OHS death index yet, but I definitely am going to request for that death certificate. It will be interesting to see if all of this connects. I will keep you informed.

Thank you for your help

I have a couple of things to suggest, all of them tentative.

The 1880 census you mentioned lists the son as Joseph C. Voorhis; a Joseph C. Voorhis died 11/6/1933 in Butler County, Ohio, according to the Ohio Historical Society Death Certificate Index; you could get the death certificate to see if that is your great-grandmother's brother.

There is a Joseph Voorhis in Hamilton County who may be the same person as your Joseph A. Voorhis; in 1870 he is age 22, born Ohio, a laborer on a farm in Sycamore; in 1860 he is (probably the same person) age 11, born Ohio, in Montgomery with Harriet Voorhis 31, hotel keeper, and George 9, plus three boarders. So far I can't track down that Harriet Voorhis with the two boys.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you find more information. I also suggest that you post on the guestbook at www.vanvoorhees.org.

Ann
VoorhiesAnn@AOL.com

Voorhis family Warren County, OH

My Voorhis line comes from my father's mother's side of the family. The earliest Voorhis I know I am connected to is a Joseph A. Voorhis born about 1850 in Ohio. He was living in Union township, Warren County, OH in 1880 according to the US census. His wife was named Celina her maiden name was Hurley. They had a daughter (my g grandmother), Louisa M. Voorhis (1877), and a son Joseph Voorhis (1879). That is all the info I have, the voorhis' do not appear in later censuses that I have searched. Any one out there that might have a connection?

Thank you

The family is in the new 2 Vol. books published in 2003 on page 1137. Benjamin Franklin Voorhis and wife Mary Anne Donahue. She was b. 1853 Nyack, Rockland Co., NY. Benjamin was b. 3 April 1864 same place. His ancestors are, starting with father: William, Jacob, Petrus VanVoorhees, Albert, Petrus, Albert, Steven VanVoorhees from the Netherlands. Mary Adelaide Voorhis b. 15 July 1893 m. William H. Keigh. There is a * by her name which means there is more info available but her number is 18362 and the 2nd Vol. doesn't go that high. Perhaps when they publish another book she'll be in it.

First, let me apologize to anyone who gets this message more than once, since I will be posting it to more than one message board/mailing list.

The above names are some that would be found in my mother's estate. The
contents of her house in Franklin Lakes, NJ, was sold by my brother between
her
death in Aug 2003 to current. He would not sell to me or give me the names
of
the people he sold to.

Some of the items I am desperately searching for are:
1. Framed cross stitch sampler with the saying 'Let me live by the side of
the road and be a friend to man'. I believe my mother wrote on the back
"Catherine Concannon Funder". Catherine was my grandmother.
2. Cookbook belonging to Catherine Funder. I have reason to believe her
name was written on the inside front cover(s).
3. Shamrock pig cookie jar and matching salt & pepper shakers.
4. Round pedestal, claw foot table and sideboard.
5. Funder family Bible (Abington, MA) dating from the early 1900's. My mother's name,
Florence Francis, and her DOB would be in it.
6. Family photos with the names,
Funder-Schifftner-Concannon-Voorhis-Burger-Rowland,etc, on the back.

If you purchased any items from a house in Franklin Lakes, NJ, please contact me.
There were over 7 rooms of furniture sold. It is impossible to list all the
items here.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Linda Schifftner Jackson
lmjack15@aol.com
After a year I find this post. I have found that Theodore and Harriett are not in my family line. Although the Van Voorhees association originally associated my g, g grandfather Isaac Vorhis with this couple, I have found evidence that a william and margaret were Isaac Vorhis's parent per his death certification and Civil war pension applications. Also, my grandfather's sister Margaret was named after her grandmother Margaret Voris. During my research of the Van Voorhees family lines, I haven't come across Theodore or Harriett.

Sincerely
Richard

Go to www.albright.org which is the site of Scranton Public Library which has microfilms of the newspapers. On the site you can provide them with the information (name, date, and newspaper cited in my posting). They will provide you with a photocopy as an interlibrary loan for free. See under "departments and services" at the site about photocopies that can be obtained in this manner.

There is an entire organization in the US dedicated to the geneaology of this family (all descendants can be traced to one immigrant)!. Go to www.vanvorhees.org and check. The info on ancestry.com website isn't complete. You'll be amazed at the info you can get from this other site. Happy hunting!

The name Voorhis originated in this country in what is now the New York City/New Jersey areas. Look for Voorhees, and Van Voorhees along with other variations such as Voorhies, Voorhes, Voris etc--they are all on the surname message board list. Also if you send information to the VanVoorhees association they will probably be able to tell you your lineage--there is a $10.00 fee to join but it saves hours of looking and searching --they will be able to search your line of the tree back to--at least 1660 a Van Voorhees who came to NY shores from the Netherlands--you can get to the Van Voorhees site through aol or maybe yahoo or msn--good luck.

If you are looking for Voorhis, after you read this board, also take a look at Voorhees and Van Voorhees boards. I have counted about 18 different spellings, but all the families are descended from the same immigrant from the Netherlands who came to Brooklyn in 1660. I will be happy to help anyone with Voorhees families, no matter how it is spelled.

Ann
VoorhiesAnn@AOL.com
