Re: Ellen Vorhes

Eleanor Voorhees, born 8 May 1835, daughter of Cornelius Chapman Voorhees and Rachael Grisilda Linder; these are Ohio and West Virginia folks. According to the book THE VAN VOORHEES FAMILY IN AMERICA by Florence Christoph, Eleanor married Jacob Herscht circa 1854, then married Ike Hubbs circa 1865. The book contains some info on her ancestry back about two generations in New Jersey.

Ann

Yes, the parents of Ellen/Eleanor and Abigail are Cornelius Chapman Voorhes and Rachel Grisilda Linder. Don't know her parents, but his father was a C. Van Voorhees, born about 1770 in New Jersey, and he probably married a Chapman. We are working on tracing the ancestry to connect it to the main Van Voorhees lines in NJ and NY.

Please keep in touch.

Ann

The birth of Sarah Voorhees, daughter of Samuel Voorhees and Jane Lackey, is listed in the book THE VAN VOORHEES FAMILY IN AMERICA, the first six generations, by Florence Christoph. This is the official publication of the Van Voorhees family association and it documents the ancestry of Sarah Voorhees back to the original immigrant from the Netherlands. This family lived in Hamilton County, Ohio, but the book does not specifically say that the 14 children were born there.

Ann

The History Of Belmont & Jefferson counties, Ohio
author - J. A. Caldwell
pub. - 1880

page - 506

Unionport Lodge No. 333
Chartered in October 16, 1861 - Aubust 21, 1879 members numbered 48
Officers - Treasurer - SAMUEL VORHES

Bloomfield, Jefferson county, Ohio
First physicians -Dr. Harrison, Dr. Riddle , DR. VORHES, Dr. Johnson

Some time from 1856 to 1860, David farmer bought from Henry Eagleson, of Harrison County, a steam flouring mill, which he removed to Bloomfield and put upon the tanyard lot, formerly owned by Alexander Bines. The citizens, as a inducement, assisted in the purchase. About 1863 or 1864, Farmer sold it to VOORHES & Keller, who attached a saw mill to it. These men ran it for some time, when it was sold by the sheriff to Reuben Burchfield.

That is all the Vorhes info in the book. There is more posted on Vorhis & Voorhies message boards. I an not related, just hope it helps.
In September of 1918, Frank Everet Vorhes listed her on his WWI draft card as nearest relative Flora Holland, mother, of Judith Gap, Mont.

In the 1920 census of Fergus County, MT she was listed with Frank and son Kline as Flora Holland 63, born Illinois, parents born Canada and Illinois. She was not listed there in the 1930 census, so I presume that either she died, or maybe went back to Illinois (where the winters are maybe not so brutal for an old lady <g>).

VoorhiesAnn@AOL.com

Vorhes in McAlester, OK

I have recently done some research on a Vorhes family from McAlester, OK, and would like to confer with descendants. The progenitor was Wesley Eugene Vorhes born about 1865 in Ohio. He had sons Wesley Eugene Vorhes, Joseph Benson Vorhes, Stacey Baily Vorhes, and John B. Vorhes, and daughters Harriet, Louise, Frances, Ruth, and Isabella. The family came to McAlester about 1902.

VoorhiesAnn@AOL.com

Daniel, it's a good bet that the Van Voorhees family association can help you. We have a huge database (70,000 and growing). It's very inexpensive to join ($10) and you are eligible because your grandfather was a Voorhees. Just go to www.vanvoorhees.org and click on membership. If you need more help, you can always email me at voorhiesann@aol.com.

Regards,
Ann
