I own the Edwin Vosburgh family Bible, purchased a long time ago, in Colorado Springs CO. Would like to return it to a direct family member. The Bible includes a marriage certificate showing Edwin Vosburgh married alice M. Satterle in Lake City Iowa on 22 Sept. 1881. Also has the births of Nora, George, Essie and Ray.

Peter Vosburg (1834 - ?) Owego and Binghamton, New York

I am searching for the places of death and burial of Peter Vosburg and wife Mary.

Peter Vosburg was born Jan 1834 in New York; married Mary (surname unknown) ca 1860; died sometime after the 1900 census of Binghamton, Broome Co., New York. Peter Vosburg is likely the son of Peter Vosburgh and Cornelia (surname unknown).

Mary (surname unknown), Peter’s wife, was born Feb 1835 in New York; died sometime after the 1900 census of Binghamton, Broome Co., New York.

Peter and Mary were farmers residing in the area of Binghamton township and village during the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census records. Peter and Mary had at least four children born in Tioga or Broome counties of New York between ca 1861 and ca 1876. Their known children are:

Alida, dau born ca 1861 in NY
Frederick, son born ca 1863 in NY
Emma, dau born ca 1867 in NY
Della, dau born ca 1876 in NY

As mentioned previously, I believe that Peter Vosburg (1834 - ?) is the son of Peter and Cornelia (surname unknown) Vosburgh. The family of Peter and Cornelia Fosburgh [sic] are enumerated in the 1850 census of Owego, Tioga Co., New York, as follows:

Peter	51	NY Farmer
Cornelia 44	NY
Adam	19	NY
Peter	16	NY
Luman	13	NY
Mary	10	NY
Martha	4	NY
Henry	1	NY

Any help identifying the places of death and burial of Peter Vosburg and wife Mary would be much appreciated.

Paul E.
Hi Deanna and Walter,

My great grandfather was a Frank S. Vosburgh. I'm sure he's not the same Frank as the one you are talking about. I'm just adding this in because I searched for a long time for Frank S. Vosburgh without much success..... one day someone took a picture of his headstone for me. That's when I realized that his name was Francis Sydney Vosburgh not Frank..... Once I found that, the doors opened and I was able to find quite a large amount for him! Sometimes during his life he was refered to as Frank and sometimes Francis.
Maybe searching for Francis S. could help you !!!

My Francis S. Vosburgh was born in 1844 in Chemung County, New York. The son of Isaac and Betsy Ann Vosburgh.

Best of luck in your search!!!
gail

Deanna,

Wow! First message I've posted and I get a response the same day!

It could be. According to Census records, my grandfather, (Walter Francis Vosburgh - whom I'm named after), father's name was Frank S. Vosburgh, (verified through my father), whom, according to another earlier U.S. Census, (1910), showed Frank S. Vosburgh as head of household, (who was married to Alice ?) and had three other sons - Harry, age 18, Frederich ( or Frederick), age 11, Frank S. Jr., age 7, and my grandfather, Walter F. Vosburgh, age 5., which is correct since my grandfather was born in 1905. I know for a fact that my grandfather, (Walter F. Vosburgh), was the only child of Alice, since Frank S. was widowed and remarried after Harry, Frederick, and Frank were already born, and they were always referred to in the family as Grandpa's "half-brothers."

According to the census of 1870, J.H.H. and Susan J. both had ages listed as 39, which would put their births at 1831, and had Frank S., (age 8 - attending school - puttin his birth around 1862), and Marion E., (age 19 - no occupation), listed as children.

Our family heirlooms include a full set of grammar school books from Frank S. Vosburgh, with his printed name and date - 1870. Judging from the context of the books - they are elementary school books at best - 3rd or 4th grade, which is also spot on with the dates/ages. Unfortunately I do not have any other specific data to link them to Herkimer/Little Falls, but to be honest - I've never really looked at them from that perspective. My dad has them at his house.

Maybe there is a Shuyler connection in there somewhere.

I would be thrilled if you could do some research while you are in Herkimer.

Thank you for your response, and thank you in advance for your trip to Herkimer and doing the research. I owe you.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,

Walter F. Vosburgh

Walter. I've been searching Vosburgh for many years and have a huge file but there are no sources for the information that I have which is very sparce to say the least. I have Hobart vosburgh b. ca 1831 as husband of Susan. Frank S. as son b. ca 1862. I have J. H. H. Vosburgh as parent of Marion E. No mother given.
Susan b. ca 1821 in Oneida Co.

I'm going to be in Herkimer at the Historical society on Friday. I'll take a look at the Vosburgh file. I've see it over and over but will take another look for J. H. H. and for Hobart. Do you supposed that one of the "H's" in this name is Hobart?

According to message board they are buried at St. Thomas Cemetery in Noyan, Quebec, Canada.
Transcription shows other Vosburgh's in this cemetery. I also show that they are buried with 2 of the grandchildren. William D. and Barbara had 2 sons William H. and Hiram Louis.

William D and Barbara are my Four Great Grandparents. I am related through Hiram's brother William H.

Because I have just begun to research the Vosburgh family, I would be interested in learning any information you might have on this line.

Canadian Military records are housed in the National Archives in Ottawa. Their records are very complete. Although I have never heard of "The Canadian Maritime Police" but if they existed, their records will be found there. Best if you can travel to Ottawa. I am not sure how you can get someone to do the bit of research required to xerox the record and send it to you. There is a modest charge for the xeroxing.

I have an extensive genealogy of Vosburg(h)s but unfortunately no Albert Winfield.

Hello Walter

I'm doing some research on J.H.H. Vosburgh who bequeathed $4200 to Tabernacle Baptist Church, Utica, NY (where I am secretary).

I can tell you the following, shared with me by another church member who has also done a bit a digging:

A work called "10,000 Vital Records of Central New York (1813-1850)" includes this entry:

9120. Vosburgh, J.H. of Utica m 6/25/50 Susan Jeanette Farley, dau of Rev. John of Trenton, NY, in Utica; Rev.J. Stanford Holm (9-6/26 and 6/27)

I suspect the "9-6/26 and 6/27" represent dates this info was published in a Utica newspaper.

A brief census review I've done shows:
1850 Howard Vosburgh, Utica, clerk, 21
1860 Hobart & Susan, Utica, jeweller, 30
1870 J.H.H. Vosburgh, Little Falls, jewelry store, 39
1880 same, but widowed, 49
1900 same, 64 Church St., Little Falls, 69, b. June 1830
1910 same, 79, living Utica w/grandson Hobart B Roberts [middle initial should be "V" for Vosburgh per Hobart's WWI reg card]

J.H.H. and both his parents were born in NY.

Bequest to Tabernacle Baptist occurred in 1917. Thus far I have not found any records indicating he was a member.

Hope this helps.

Susan M. Bork

Use the "at" symbol in these addresses, please:

spbork "at" dreamscape.com (home)
tbcutica "at" centralny.twcbc.com (Tabernacle Baptist Church)

Hello! I am hoping to find out what happened to my grandfather, ALBERT WINFIELD VOSBURG, born OCT 28 1886. Altoona, PA. He was a merchant marine on the Great Lakes, married GRACE BARKER and settled in Douglas, MI Had 10 children; Albert, Frances, Ruth, Grace marie, Dorothy Jane, Shirley, Elwin, Richard, and 2 others. Albert DISAPPEARED around 1930. All children were given up for adoption/placed in an orphanage. Grace then moved to Chicago, remarried (VanderMolen) and had 2 more children! Would love to know what happened to grandfather and more about his ancestors in PA. His 1917 US Military Draft registration card lists Previous Military Service as: "Canadian Maritime Police".
