I also have John J Cronk son of William and Mary Vreeland Cronk his wife. Yes, the certificate is very difficult to read. I came up with Eliza Van Ltvander instead of Alida Van Shandler. Maybe between the two of us we can come up with the correct name. Thank you for the further info on John J's side. My direct email addy is warren017@centurytel.net. We live in OR so it's rather difficult to do on site research. I lived in NJ til 1978 when we moved to WY. Would love to share research . Jane

Hello Jane
I am also researching Jacob Vreeland and his wife Kesiah. My stepfather was John Edward Cronk who was the son of Arthur Russel Cronk and Emma Crutts. Arthur was the son of John Cronk and Mary Vreeland. Mary was the daughter of James C. Vreeland and Maria Ann Sisco. James was the son of Jacob Vreeland and Kesiah. The John Cronk who married Mary Vreeland was the son of William Cronk and Alida Van Shandler (not sure of spelling as the writing on the marriage certificate for John & Mary is difficult to read). Are any of these names in your family tree besides Jacob, Kesiah and their children?

Ed

Somewhere in the 1860's or so, one of the Vreeland girls who lived in Passaic NJ, married a Mather. Not sure if name was Richard, Albert, Harry or George Mather. I remember the Vreeland farmhouse in Passaic. It was still standing when I told my son that our ancestors lived there. Unfortunatly, there is some vaugeness with the history. It seems that this Mather, had one, maybe two wives? And the poepl who knew something have now passed on.

Looking for Charles L. Vreeland of NY

I have a wedding certificate from 1867 showing a Charles L Vreeland marrying Abbie Day. The witnesses are Abbie's parents. I also have a pension certificate showing Charles L. Vreeland as having served in the civil war in Co B 185th Reg NY infantry. The civil war Db shows him as surviving his service.

They had at least 2 children.
1 Charles Day Vreeland, 1868-1872
2 David Sexton Vreeland, 1869-1930's, changed his name back to Day from Vreeland prior to 1900 census
3 Harold Charles Day, abt 1891-unk (not sure about this child)

The civil war roster lists his DOB as abt 1843 but doesn't indicate where or who his parents are. The Bureau of Pensions certificate that I have says this:

"Abbie M. Vreeland widow of Charles L. Vreeland, known as Charles H. Lee who was in Co B 185th Reg NY Infantry"

I don't know why it shows him with two names but this is something I'm looking into in the next few days.

I have no other information on Charles Vreeland or his family. I am hoping someone out there can offer some assistance with this.

Thank you,
Richard Day

My first thought on the strange last name REAMUR was that it might be DOREMUS. There are several men named Peter Henry or Henry Peter DOREMUS in the early 1800s. There have been some marriages between a VREELAND and a DOREMUS, but I did not find the one you are looking for.

I used Google to find Peter Henry DOREMUS. I used only the one spelling. You might find more if you played around with it some.

Replied again because of an error.
Hi Susan I was really surprised to receive your reply to my post, I had forgotten about the post. Yes your mother and I have the same great-grandparents. Your mother's grandmother Elizabeth, my mother called her Aunt Lizzy, I don't remember her she passed when I was 10. I only knew about a son named Harold Bull who was married to Helen and that was because he kept in touch with my mother. I do remember a story about Uncle Ike. If, your mother should have any more information on the two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, of Jonas & Mary it would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe a picture of them. You see back in the 70's I had a major fire and everything I had was destroyed. I don't even remember the birthdays. The only date that I do remember is the date great-grandmother Mary died, because my grandmother Mary died the same day 33 years later. The dates was 10/26/28 & 10/26/61.
There is a lot of information on the Vreeland family posted on Ancestry, and some of it is incorrect, they have Elizabeth married to Jonas. I sent e-mails back in 2005 to 3 different people giving them the correct information about Jonas & Mary, but it was never corrected. I only got a reply from the husband of one of the ladies, saying she passed away and he also, sent me a copy of what information he had on the Vreeland family, it dates back to the 1600's. If, you or your mother would like a copy of it, let me know and I will email it to you. I would need your address. I don't know if email addresses show up on this, so I will spell it. Mine is MaBlueAngels312 at AOL dot com.
Thank you Marianne

Hi. Many thanks for your reply. Actually I am descended from the Doremus family, as Gertrude and Petrie's (Pierre's?) daughter Marguerite (Peg) married David Doremus (1798 - 1875) in about 1819. My gg grandmother was their daughter Susan Reaumur Currey (Doremus) (1835 - 1908). Yes, there are many variations of the spelling of Doremus.
Rene Antoine Ferchault de Reaumur (1683 - 1757) was one of the leading scientists of his day. He invented a thermometer that stood beside the Fahreinheit and Centigrade scales for many years, but he also contributed much to other areas of science and maths. Reaumur is the name of the village in France from which he came. There are many entries on the web for him. I believe that he is a 7X great uncle of mine.
Once again, many thanks for your interest.
Cheers,
Greg

I wonder if anyone can help me with this one. I'm looking for information on Gertrude "Realand" (I think it should be Vreeland!) who was born in Pontamac (Potomac?), NJ, in 1781. She is supposed to have married "Petrie Henri Reamur" (Pierre Henri Reaumur??) in the 1790s, as their daughter Marguerite (my ggg grandmother) was born on 22/9/1800. I already have Vreeland ancestry through the Van Houten family - I'm descended from Michael (Michiel) through his son Cornelis and his daughter Achtje.
Would appreciate any assistance.

Cheers,
Greg Partington,
Sydney, Australia

Marianne: My mother's Great Grandfather appears to be the same as yours. Jonas Vreeland married to Mary Delhagen. She mentioned something about an Uncle Ike who disappeared? Said the family assumed he had gone off to war. She believes he passed away when she was about 4, which would make it 1937. Does that sound about right to you? She is related by the Bull family, her father being George Edward Bull.
Susan
