John G. Waddell and America Morrison Documentation

I have my suspicions about the information surrounding John G. Waddell and America Morrison. And I literally started researching them yesterday, so I legitimately need help here. I'm wondering, where are people getting that "G" stands for "Gilkerson"?

I wonder this because of two children's names: Perry Harrison Waddell and Frances Augusta Waddell.

One piece of the puzzle claims that Isaac Waddell of Anderson, SC, was a son of Rev. James Waddell and Mary Gordon of Virginia. Mary Gordon's mother was Mary Harrison. Lots of their descendants had "Harrison" as a first or middle name.

Another piece of the puzzle shows that Isaac Waddell's daughter, Mahala, had a daughter named Mary Frances Hubbard. Also, she had Lila Augusta Hubbard.

"Augusta", according to my latest research, might come from the Middleton family (Isaac Waddell married Nancy Middleton whose parents are unknown, but might perchance be of Middleton Place, which was flowing with Arthurs and Augustuses and Henriettas, names that are repeated in Mahala's family).

Are we certain that James G. Waddell was James Gilkerson Waddell, son of the James or William Waddell who married Elizabeth Munday or Mundy? What if "G" stands for "Gordon"?

Re: John Gilkerson and America Waddell

Something about the name "Frances Augusta Waddell" points to the family of Isaac Waddell and Nancy Middleton. Mahala, their daughter, married William Hubbard and had Lila Augusta Hubbard and Mary Frances Hubbard.

Isaac is supposed to be the son of Rev. James Waddell and Mary Gordon, but I haven't found documentation. In any case, the name "Perry Harrison Waddell" points to Rev. James's family; Mary Gordon's mother was Mary Harrison.

I strongly sense that the information floating around the Internet regarding John Gilkerson Waddell is inaccurate. I keep finding people who think James H. Waddell married Amanda Elizabeth Munday or Mundy...which is certainly incorrect, as the records show that Elizabeth Munday married WILLIAM Waddell.

Is there documentation that John Gilkerson Waddell is a child of William/James Waddell and Elizabeth Munday?

I have that his father was John King Waddell, who married Elizabeth McLendon. John King Waddell's parents could have been (I literally just began researching John King Waddell yesterday) Isaac Waddell and Ann Middleton. At any rate, I'm pretty sure John King Waddell descends from Rev. James Waddell and Mary Gordon, based on the use of names like "Harrison", "Addison", etc.

R. J. Waddell - Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

R. J. Waddell dies on way to Hospital
Winnipeg Contractor Takes Suddenly Ill on Saturday Evg.
R. J. Waddell who resided at 518 1/3 Notre Dame avenue, died suddenly early on Sunay (sic) morning. Feeling ill, on Saturday evening, he had gone into the home or (sic) a neighbor at 520 Notre Dame avenue, and an effort made to secure medical attendance failing, it was ultimately decided to take him to the General hospital. On reaching that institution, Dr. Cleghorn, house surgeon, pronounced life extinct. The deceased had been a victim of lung trouble for some time past. He was 68 years of age and is survived by his wife and a daughter, Mrs. J. A. McKaughan, suite 3, Sherbrook block.
Mr. Waddell was candidate for mayor of Winnipeg in 1917, in business he was a contractor and had also been connected in partnerships in the grocery business. He at one time owned considerable Winnipeg real estate and also took an interest in mining, having been president of one company and director of another. Dr. Cameron, acting coroner, is investigating and a post mortem examination will probably be ordered.

Source: Manitoba Free Press (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada)
January 1, 1923 Page 5

A photograph of W. J. accompanies this article.

I have no further information about this person. This is just a random act of genealogical kindness.

I hope this article helps someone with their research.

We have some elusive Grahams in our family, also from Belmont County, close to Monroe, around that time. I'm descended from John Graham b.1818, m. Amanda Hammond. John has associations with a Robert A. b.1824, that some others are researching, but we can't find a definite connection even between them. I'm descended from John's duaghter, Mary Eliza. She had 4 brothers who could be potential parents for you. Robert also had 5 sons who also could be.

John's son Robert is listed as being buried in Harmony Cemetery in Somerset Twp. I've been there, and did not find any Grahams at all. I recently uploaded my gedcom file onto Rootsweb, under g_evere@yahoo.com, so you might check those names out, to see if you can find something.

Waddells in Baltimore County Maryland

I have a William Waddell from Glasgow Scotland (b.1802), and his wife Letitia (b.1801) from Ireland who came to Baltimore in 1837. They had four children born in Ireland: John (1828), Letitia (1830), Eleanor (1832), & Margaret(1835), and the others born in MD: Eliza, Isabella, Louisa, Mary, William and Jane. I think the Irish ones were born in Bandon, Cork County. Some of them married the following surnames: Erdman, Davis, Boutler, Smith, and Dilworth, all in Baltimore. Any links would be welcomed!
-Brenda

My mom hand transcribed William Waddle's (Waddell in later generations) sometime in the 1980s and I just found it and typed it up. She didn't write down the source, but I'm assuming it was a microfilm of Meriwether County's will book. I don't know if spelling/punctuation errors are hers or are from the original. William Waddle is my g-g-g-g-g grandfather through his son, James Olin Waddell.

Georgia } In the name of God Amen
Meriwether Co. } I William Waddle of the county and state aforeward being advanced in age and feeble in body but of sound disposition of mind and memory do make this my last will and testament, in doing of which, I wish my body to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my family. My soul I recommend to God who gave it hoping to receive eternal life through the merits of his son Jesus Christ, my Redeemer.

Item first: I desire and direct after my death that all my just debts be paid as early as possible.

Item second: I give bequeath and devise to my beloved wife Hannah Waddle all my land, stock of horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, household and kitchen furniture, plantation tools, notes and every species of property or effects of any kind that I may die possessed of for and during her natural life or widowhood and after her death the whole of my estate both real and personal that may be remaining to be equally divided amongst my children by my present and last wife, to wit'. Delila Baileys children one share, Jesse Waddle one share, William J. Waddle one share, Thomas W. Waddle one share, Susan Waddle one share and James O.
J.G. Waddell

In my search to discover the ancestry of my Waddell Roots -- aka the ancestry of Marietta Waddell Ansley I've written a blog about Marietta's father - J.G. Waddell today on my blog http://genealogyframeofmind.blogspot.com/ - if you scroll down to the previous blogs you'll see a blog discussing the whereabouts (or shall I say the UNKNOWN whereaboauts) of the wife of J.G. Waddell. Stop in and see if this Waddell family of South Carolina to Jackson County, Georgia rings any bells with yours.
J.G. Waddell was the GRANDSON of a MARY Waddell born in SC in the 1790's. Details are sketchy, but I'd love for any input that you might have regarding this family.

John "David" Waddle

Hello to everyone :-)
I am trying to find the father of John "David" Waddle/Waddell. The only thing I know of this man is that he was born ca: 1814 in Va. and married Malinda Lyddia (Liddy)Robinette in va. I know that Liddy was born ca: 1829 in Black Lick, Wythe Co. Va. In 1864 she re-married John Johnson in Bland Co. Va.
She and John "David" Waddle/Waddell had 6 children. soooo I am assuming David must had pasted on sometime after 1860 (beings I find him and her on the 1860 census, and their last child was born 1861...then in the 1870 census she and her children are listed with Mr. Johnson and her name is now "Johnson". She and Mr. Johnson had no children that I know of.
Anyone else working on this line??? This is my husbands line, I have it worked forward from John to present.
Thanks in advance,
Diann Waddell

Hi Gavin - I'm wondering if you have come across a Rev. John Waddell of Scotland who came to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1798 to minister to the folks of Truro. He had an older brother James who settled in Nova Scotia in 1813 at the age of 49 years and worked at carpentry and cabinet making. Some chairs he made are now in the keeping of the Nova Scotia Museum. I descend from James - his wife was Isabel Bruce....
Any of this familiar or of interest to you?
Cheerio !
Jane
Marriage of Miss Louisa Harris to James Waddell

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 14 July 1893 ...

A Bridegroom Baffled

Col. Jim Harris was last Monday and Tuesday was the custodian of his granddaughter, Miss Louisa Harris, the 14 year old daughter of Mr. Dick Harris, of Nevada, Collin County, who on last Sunday ran away and was married to James Waddell, of Nevada.

The circumstances attending the marriage as related to the Times-Star by Col. Jim, were as follows:

Waddell had been paying his attentions to Miss Harris for sometime, though against the wishes of her father. On last Sunday morning he took advantage of Mr. Harris' absence in Arkansas to marry the young lady. The matter was prearranged between them. Miss Harris, in company with several other young ladies, started, so they told Mrs. Harris, for church. Instead of going to the church, however, they went to the Baptist parsonage, where Waddell and the minister were waiting their arrival. When all had arrived the ceremonhy was solemnized and the entire party took their departure for Farmersville to spend the day. At Farmersville two cousins of the bride heard rumors of the marriage and that evening followed the bridal party back to Nevada, where they found the mother of the girl grief-stricken on account of the marriage. The two cousins offered their assistance to rescue their daughter. Itwas accepted. The bridal party at this time were having a gay time at the home of one of the groom's friends. At about 8 o'clock a vehicle bearing the cousins, the mother and the elder sister of the bride drove up to the house and Mrs. Harris called for her daughter to come out to the gate. She came running out to the gate to greet her mother, when strong arms seized and lifted her into the vehicle and she was driven rapidly away. She was brought to her grandfather in this city, her cousins accompanying her, arriving in Terrell at sunrise Monday morning.

Monday Col. Jim Harris received a telegram from the mother of the girl, stating that it was rumored that Waddell with a party of his friends would sweep down upon the house of her daughter's protector and forcibly take her from him. She beseeched him to protect her daughter. Col. Jim took all necessary precautions and had the groom and his friends come on the purpose designated they would have very probably received a reception in thorough accord with the temperature of the weather. Mr. Waddell and his friends did not make the expected onslaught. Mr. Dick Harris, the father of the girl, came home, however, Tuesday morning. Having learned on his return from Arkansas of his daughter's marriage, he mounted his horse and rode post haste to Terrell. He returned to his home in Nevada Tuesday afternoon taking his daughter with him, whom he will give the alternative of living at home or with the young man she married.

Waddell is 20 years of age, Miss Harris but 15. It is presumed that Waddell procured the license by misrepresenting the girl's age. It is also said that he represented to the preacher who married them that all differences between himself and the young lady's parents had been settled and that they were perfectly willing that they should marry.

Update: I just looked at some material compiled by a great-great-grandson of Mahala Waddell, Harry Edwards. None of this appears to be online, so here goes: Martha Mahala was the daughter of Isaac Waddell, son of Rev. James Waddell and Mary Gordon. Martha's mother was Nancy Middleton.

Martha Waddell Hubbard b. abt 1807

I think I'm on to something.

Look at General Hugh Waddell's portrait at the top of this page: http://www.geocities.com/mv66nc/merrill/hughwaddell.html

Then look at portraits of Amelia Ball Brown, daughter of Elijah Webb Brown and Mary Francis Hubbard, who was the daughter of Martha Waddell and William Hubbard.

The resemblance is there.

Furthermore, Martha's firstborn son was Robert Hayne/Haynes Hubbard. Well, guess who Hugh Waddell's wife was? Mary Haynes. They had a son named Haynes Waddell who died young, and two other sons, John Burgwin Waddell and Hugh Jr Waddell. One of them (I forget which, but look it up on RootsWeb) had a son named after their dead brother Haynes.

Still further, many men named Francis married into the family. Which might explain Mary Francis Hubbard's middle name.

The only issue is that Hugh's descendants are pretty much all in North Carolina. Martha's father was born in Georgia, according to the 1880 Census. But Hugh had several plantations...it's possible he or his sons went down to Georgia at some point.

Or maybe Hugh had a daughter (nobody ever mentions daughters in that period) who married a Georgian, and the name Waddell went to Martha as a middle name that has often been confused as her surname.

What do you think?

I think your Thomas is the son of James Emory Waddell and Amanda Jane Plummer. It's hard to be 100% certain since the family doesnt appear in the 1880 census...

Are you certain Rhoda's last name is Sullivan? The marriage license shows Sullin.
