Hi there,
It looks like we're related. I haven't done much on the tree lately but you're welcome to see what's there so far, there are quite a lot of 'branches' I find it very difficult not to trace these also as I feel everyone has a part to play in the overall 'tree' I know many people stick to just immediate family but I think that's a shame. Because I spread my net wider I have now found relations in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and of course UK. If you let me have your email address I'll add you to the short list of people able to view our tree. If I can be of any further help, don't hesitate to contact me again. My email is julia@jw11952.orangehome.co.uk Happy hunting!
Regards
Julia

Hi, thanks for your swift reply. Sorry, I didn't think to include the full information before.

Mary Jane Waddington (born c.1860, Whitehaven) was the daughter of Marmaduke Waddington (born c.1840, Annan, Scotland). Marmaduke was the son of William Waddington (1815-1877, born in Kendal before moving to Whitehaven). It is this William that I believe must be the same one that you referenced in your original post.

Mary Jane Waddington married George Elliott (born c.1860, Tipton, Staffs.) and lived with him at Scilly Banks in Whitehaven (which is still a small row of houses near Moresby Parks). Among their children was Emma Elliott, who married Frank Mason of Distington. These two became my mother's grandparents. Most of the Mason family, and some Elliotts, still live close by, but I have never yet met a Waddington in Whitehaven.

Thank you,
Ben Messenger

Hi,
I could do with a bit more info if you can. Who were Mary Jane's parents, in otherwords which of William's children?
William is a direct ancestor of my Husband. We have been to Whitehaven several times and the surrounding area seeking information and proof of various pieces of information.
Regards

Hi

I found this thread as I was looking for more ancestors of William Waddington (1815-1887), and couldn't get any further, being far from the Cumbria Records Office and restricted to the internet.

William was my ancestor, due to his granddaughter Mary-Jane, who married George Elliott, and their daughter was my great-grandmother. This part of the family has been in Whitehaven ever since - I grew up just half a mile from William's home in Scotch Street.

I was just wondering, as it seems that our Williams are the same, how did you find his father, Marmaduke? Have you any information you could possibly pass on? I would also be very grateful if you have found any ancestors since you began this thread, as they would also come into my family tree.

Thank you,
Ben Messenger

Thomas Waddington born in Cumberland

I am trying to find information on Thomas Waddington. He was born abt 1849 in Cumberland and moved to Scotland where he married an Elizabeth Allardice in Arbroath, Forfarshire. I know from Scottish census information that he was a Currier.

Does anyone have him in their tree and know who his parents would be?

His grandaughter, Lizzie Waddington, was my great grandmother and seems to dissapear without a trace in the 30's. My grandmother was told that she'd died but there is no death record. She was in Newton Abbott in Devon in 1932 having come back from Ontario, Canada. I believe that she may have moved and re-married.

Can anyone help/advise?

Hi Glenda - Thanks for your note. There are several Mary Waddingtons born in Yorkshire in 1810. One has a father named William, one John (neither mentions the mom) and one has a father Miles and mother Martha. I also found several others, but I'm not sure if they are from Yorkshire. I just know that Mary married Daniel Birkbeck May 14, 1826 in Bradford, England. They had seven children: Thomas b.1828, Martha b.1829, Sarah b.1831, Easter b. 1833, Jane b.1834, Mary Ann b.1836 and William b. 1837. I'm kind of stuck there. I don't know anything about Mary Waddington's family or Daniel Birkbeck's family. Thanks for looking.

Dear Glenda
Thanks for the information about rootsweb - I have looked on that site and have contacted the person who mentions William Waddington - she is researching a family tree for Manby, an ancestor married into the Waddingtons.
I am afraid I do not have any real information about the Waddingtons who became famous for puzzles /playing cards etc - it is just that my mother in law has always stated that they are part of her family - I am just trying to find out if that is the case.
On another note - the information you mentioned about the family story concerning the lady who was rejected by William Waddington is of real interest to me. Does this story appear in the book or have you heard it from elsewhere?
Pam

Dear Glenda
Thank you so much for the information you have sent, it has confirmed so much that I have been searching for. Can you tell me if the family story about the woman who through the deeds into the fire was in the book or did you find that somewhere else?
I have been researching a descendant of the William Waddington, along with a relative of his, for sometime. My research partner is in Australia too and I know she will be thrilled when I pass on these details.
We both a have a handwritten copy of a family tree which links William Waddington (b.1790) with a Lady Charlotte of Belayse. However, neither of us have been able to establish a link with her or her family and have been wondering about the authenticity of that fact for some time. I just wondered if your information showed a name for the woman?

There are two other Waddington links we are searching for which I wonder if you know anything about as we are pretty stuck! Do you know which family the Wadddingtons (card & game manufactures) came from? (a 94 year old in the family is adamant that her family of Waddingtons started the company and she had been told by her mother) Secondly do you know anything about a Waddingtons School, at Rawdon (about 1820's) which taught agriculture alongside academic subjects?

Thank you so much for what you send today. We have done so much research and even visited the places in Yorkshire to find out more ( I am in UK so not too difficult!) but have felt that we had reached a dead end - your information has confirmed several facts and taken me back a whole generation.
Regards
Pam

Hi, I'm looking for any connections to the Waddingtons from Cumbria, England. I understand some male members during the late 1800s emigrated to South Africa to work in the diamond mines, but I don't know exactly who, when etc. The family name Marmaduke seems to have been important and several male members were either miners or paviors. Any iformation would be gratefully received. Regards Julia Waddington

Hello Glenda, so sorry I've not replied to your email before now. Unfortunately I've had broadband problems (sorted now I think) and have been really busy at work, (I'm a senior school teacher) with reports and soforth. It is quite amazing that your family originated from Sowerby Bridge, which is only about ten minutes drive from where we live and where our son, Christopher lives even closer to. I have quite a lot of information on the decendants of Marmaduke Waddington b 1787 D1866, it's his ancestors where I need the help. I am grateful for the information on 'Dukes father Thomas b1757 d1838 but does your book say who he married? Is it possible to also know when Marmaduke's wife, Ann Walker (b1782) died. My email address is julia@jw11952.orangehome.co.uk I really find it exciting to be in touch with a possible connection in Oz. Feel free to contact me direct. Kind Regards Julia

when you ask for a name on rootsweb and you have so many come up to look at you look in the right hand side of the name and it says history, books and census. you click on books and whos who of the waddingtons comes up. you have to join ancestry.com for a month or more to access the book. as well as more info on who you are looking for. i finished my tree with a month ,non stop. you pay for a lot more info than you get on rootsweb. if you have time,24-7 for a month it is worth the cost.

I also have a copy of Whos Who of the Waddingtons. I will have a look and see who his children married and if they had any children. If you know when his father married it will be a great help as the book deals in marriage dates not birth dates. Glenda

HI I had a whole message written and it s suddenly gone. so we start again, I will look thru for the dukes granddad. I might take awhile as there are 600 pages. the waddingtons are all in year of marriage only. so if you have no idea of when then it is very time consuming. you have to go back to how old you think the average groom was .the place they were born and some of the waddingtons have 2,3,4,houses. it has 99.9% of all waddingtons ever born from 1100 to 1922. I will get it done.If I find anything I will let you know. glenda Have a very good xmas and a happy new year
