In Aug 2005 Kathy Hines posted a message to the RootsWeb Waddle mailing list about starting a DNA project to “eliminate or confirm the relationships between various Waddle/Waddell/Wedel lines” that I presented in my WorldConnect site on the Johannes Wedel family:

Through the excellent efforts of Jane Whitis and Bobbie Everett a DNA record for a well documented descendent of Peter Waddle of Pulaski County, KY is now posted on the Waddell DNA project site:

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/waddell/results

The y-dna record is WX-3. By going to the Patriarchs site (from the top of the page) you can find the pedigree for Peter from which the sample was collected.

I would like to encourage others who are related to this family and are unsure about the results of my research to get DNA tests done on male descendents in their line. In this vein Bobbie Everett arranged to get a test done (WX-1 on the Waddell DNA site) on a descendent of her ancestor John B. Waddle, who I speculated might have been the son of Johannes’s Wedel’s son Daniel. John B. Waddle and Peter Waddle are very closely associated in the records. Because of the close relationship it seems likely that John’s wife Polly was the daughter of Peter.

The John B. DNA results differ from the Peter Waddle results showing that Daniel was not the biologic father of John B. Waddle. At this time the paternal ancestry of John B. has not been determined. If he was an orphan he might have been adopted by Daniel or even Peter and taken their surname. This is just one of several possibilities.

The above demonstrates the potential benefits of DNA testing for the purpose of sorting out where or if one’s paternal ancestor might fit in a particular surname line.

As shown on the Waddell site FTDNA is now offering their tests at a reduced cost through December 31, 2009.
