Good question.....I have no paretns for this man...This has been a tough line to follow.....I show for right now that his parents were a Christian and a Catherine but just names.....no idea where they came from....I need to get his Civil War pension file, I guess.....but I do not think it is going to include his birth family. I have no info, and I have gotten pretty good at this! I have the Reinhard's ( thanks to a good friend who can look at microfile named Doug) back to Germany and about 3 generations back....do you have any info on a Wagenknecht family in this area of the US? Thanks for asking! Sandy

From my analysis of Toledo city directories from 1877-1899, it appears that the John Wagenknecht you are referring to is John E. Wagenknecht, who started working in the carpet business in 1889 as a carpet cleaner and layer. Before 1889, he worked in his father's grocery store. John's father is Frederick J. Wagenknecht, b. abt. 1825 in Germany. It's interesting to see John's progress in working up the ladder, cleaning and laying carpet, becoming a foreman in 1891, secretary and manager from 1892-1987, and treasurer in 1898. By the time he opened his own business in 1901, he certainly had a lot of experience.

I found a death certificate for John's sister, Madeline M. (married Bruno Bury).

My interest in this family goes back to Fred J. Wagenknecht, who immigrated and settled in Toledo before 1860, about the same time as my ancestor, August Carl Wagenknecht, and one other Wagenknecht family. I'm trying to determine how they were all related in hopes of "connecting the dots" back to Germany. I'm slowly getting all of this information onto my Wagenknecht Wiki web site (at http://wagenknecht-gen.wikispaces.com) and I invite you to visit there.

Regards,
Kevin Bowman
Michigan

Hi Kevin,

I have just recently found that my Wagenknechts who settled in Erie county, New York, came from a small village named Lehsten in Mecklenburg. John (variously Johann and Joachim) Wagenknecht was born in 1831. I am wondering if he could be a brother or relative of your Wagenknechts. Have you found where they came from in Mecklenburg yet?

Thanks,
Leslie

Wagenknecht immigrants to Toledo (1850-1860)

In order to better understand the possible inter-relations among "my" Wagenknechts and other Wagenknechts living in Toledo in the late 1800's, I have undertaken a study of all the Wagenknecht families who immigrated and settled in Toledo sometime between 1850 and 1860. Resources available to me at this time include census enumerations, Ohio death certificates, and city directories from 1877 to 1899. (Toledo city directories were published as far back as 1858 but I don't have access to those documents at this time.)

Many of the details of my research can be found at my Wagenknecht Wiki (http://wagenknecht-gen.wikispaces.com) and I will continue to update information there as I process it. I will share my conclusions and some interesting results here for the benefit of other Wagenknecht researchers.

Although my original focus was on the families of Fred J Wagenknecht and August Carl Wagenknecht, I found a third Wagenknecht family who immigrated to Toledo between 1850 and 1860. This only became evident when I realized how interchangeable the surnames Wagner (and variations) and Wagenknecht were for this group. I found Wagenknecht/Wagner families appearing for the first time in Toledo in the 1860 census. All three families, listed as Wagner, are clustered together (households 1060, 1061, and 1063) on page 132 and
133 of the 2nd Ward City of Toledo, Lucas, Ohio.

Here are the three families:

Frederick J Wagenknecht (b. abt. 1825, Germ.)
+ Dora Peters (b. 1832, Germ.)
Charles (b. abt. 1857, OH)
Frederick J Jr. (b. 1859, OH)
Ernst (b. 1860, OH)
John E (b. 1862, OH)
Louis (b. 1871, OH)
William C (b. 1876, OH)

Carl Wagenknecht (b. abt. 1827, Germ.)
+ Agnes "Margaret" Sherman (b. 1823, Germ.)
John C. (b. 1859, OH)

August Carl Wagenknecht (b. 1826, Germ.)
+ Dora "Mary" Geist (b. 1839, Germ.)
Sophia J. (b. 1854, Germ.)
Carline (b. 1859, OH d. infant)
Dorrity E. (b. 1860, OH)
Charles J. (b. 1864, OH)
August F. (b. 1867, OH)
Louis C. (b. 1869, OH)
Mary Ann (b. 1871, OH)
Albert William (b. 1876, OH)

Other Wagenknechts immigrated and settled in Toledo in later years (around 1880) but I have been focusing on those families closest to "my" Wagenknechts (August Carl and Dora)

Surprises:
I had a heck of a time finding Fred's family in 1870, but finally came across Fred "Brown" with a family composition identical to what one would expect, including mother-in-law Augustas Peters, on p. 38 of the 2nd Ward City of Toledo, Lucas, Ohio.

Sometimes, an individual was listed in a city directory under both Wagenknecht and Wagner (or Wagener, Waggner, etc.), showing the same residence address.

Mysteries:
I have yet to locate Charles and Agnes in 1870.

According the to city directories,Fred J. Wagenknecht's family lived at 77/510 State St. (old/new address) continuously from at least from 1877 to 1899. Yet the 1880 Census shows the family at the location of their grocery store on Cherry St. and another family is listed at 77 State:

Shultz, Martin 48 laborer b. Prussia
Johanna 50 b. Baden
Spinner, F. (dau) 19 Tailoress
Joe (son) 17 Wagon Maker
Edward (son) 15 laborer
Caroline (dau) 11

Who are these people?
-----

Please check out the details on the Wagenknecht Wiki (I've posted a spreadsheet with the city directory information).

If you have any further information to offer, please let me know.

Regards,
Kevin Bowman
I am looking for information about my great grandmother, Wilhelmine Wagenknecht, or any relatives. According to two U.S. Censuses she immigrated in 1880 or 1881, but her death certificate indicates about 1877. She was born February 17, 1864 in Germany. The family believes she came from Mecklenburg, but we have no proof. Her father's name was John. She married a John Maass in Buffalo, New York in 1886 or 1887.

Diane-

John Wagenknecht and Mayme were my great grandparents and Karl, their son was my grandfather. My grandfather had passed April 11, 2007.....only a few days before your post...he was 94. I just read your post today and would be happy to help you with as much as I can. You can email me back at bkholder@mac.com. If you are searching the Wagenknecht family history, my sister and I would be interested in any information that you have.

My Great grandfather John founded the Star-Elling Rug Cleaning Company in North Toledo Ohio. The Lagrange Street business opened in 1901 and by the 20's specialized in carpet cleaning and laying services for both residential and commercial customers. My grandfather Karl had just finished his freshman year in high school when he took over the runnings of the Star Elling. The Star Elling closed only 8 years ago.......and my grandfather worked there everyday until it closed. I would have to check on the details as to why my grandfather took over so young. Karl and his younger brother Ray took over the family business.

Karl had a sister, I always called her Aunt Sis. I can pretty much get you caught up on the tree from them and more information on John and Mayme by asking my mother (Karl's only daughter) Unfortunately I do not have alot of detail personally for my great grandparents but I certainly can get you more and I may have some pictures.

I would also be interested as to who you are, please.

Cordially,
Kristin

Thanks for your response. Not sure yet since I'm just starting work on them. I'll keep your names handy as I research. It would sure be nice to make some connections in the U.S. with this side of my grandparents. I do know the father that came over with wife(unsure if 1st or 2nd) and a couple daughters was Ludwig/Lewis but no further name detail yet. I'm finding lots of info on the 6 daughters in Wheeling, WV area. There is also one son from the first marriage in Hesse that came over as well and is with the family in WV as well. Let's see where this goes. I can't imagine that Wagenknecht is that common a name - or I may just be naive. :)
Kevin, thanks for the reply. Been trying to find out Mecklinburg details and asking cousins if they have an idea. Not really getting anywhere. The Charles I know of shows up in the census as single, even in the last one. That doesn't necessarily mean he was never married though. Our Charles would have been the only son and oldest of the children that emigrated with parents. I believe his birthdate to be abt. July 1833 in Germany somewhere - always heard Hesse Darmstadt and at least one census shows Hesse D. He possibly was the only child of a first marriage. A second marriage would have occured prior to right at arrival. Census info can lead two directions. I know family ended in Michigan and Wisconsin (I was born in Michigan) so the area is right and to be honest - can there really be that many Wagenknechts? What do you think? I'd send a file but don't have any more than I've relayed. I could send a list of 'facts' that I've gotten from family photos and census if that would help. Let me know and feel free to email me directly. Kim

Wagenknecht's from Hesse Darmstadt

Trying to locate family members born early 1800s. One branch emigrated to US/Wheeling, WV and Ohio Valley, supposedly around 1850 (but could be later). First names include: Ludwig/Louis/Lewis, Catherine/Cathern/Katherine, Caroline/Carolina, Charles, etc. Name may have been Americanized to Wagner. Any leads would be appreciated.

At least George, Anna, and Gertrude immigrated to the US. Ernest had another wife, either before or after Anna Roepke.

My sisters and I were able to visit the beautiful, awesome city of Prague, the first part of October. Due to time and connections we did not go into Poland to the city of my Grandfather Hoffnauer's birth, Breslau.
As we traveled through Bavaria and Eastern Germany wondered if some our Wagenknect relatives may have lived in those small hamlets. Really hope to make the trip again sometime.

Geri,
Thanks for the bit of info on needing a sponser. I didnt know that. Good luck to you as well. As far as I can tell the Wagenknechts were very elusive. My grandfather died in 1993 and I didnt inherit very much info from him. He is the one that started the genealogy and I am trying to carry it on. I know that my Wagenknechts changed the name to Wagner. Did yours also?
Sincerely, Kelly Happy Hunting!

I have no last names except Wagenknecht and Speck, but as I said before my greatgrandad knew someone already here. Back then, you needed a sponser.Someone to vouch for your good character so to speak and to give you a job. It was usually a relative that would do this. Unfortunately my grandfather died when I was only fifteen. I know next to nothing of his background and everyone's dead that could help.I'm in the same boat as you. I hope you find your people and I find mine. Good luck. Geri

Geri,
Thanks for the repy. Thus far all I have is America! The only thing I have found is F. Wagenknecht came to America from Mecklenburg, Germany. He was 27 and the ship arrived in New York May 17, 1853 and the ship name was John Hermann. I am only guessing that this F. Wagenknecht could be my ggggrandfather. Because it is the right age and birth place. I will let you know if I find anything further.
Do you know of any Kieswetter's?
Re: Wagenknechts of OH (was Wagenknechts of MI)

Also - more mysteries:
I have not found Dora in 1880. She would have been aged 20. I know she did not marry until abt. 1884, when she married John Eisenhart (b. 1861, OH).

Of the children of C & Mary I know very little except about Dora (from whom I am descended). I've found a little bit about Maryann Wagenknect from a record here on RootsWeb. She ended up in CA and had 3 or 4 children. I don't know if or who Sophia married. I think Charles married an Anna UNKNOWN but I don't think they had any children. Albert may have kept WAGNER as his surname and I've found a possible match for him in 1900 in OH with wife Bertha and daughter Maria. I haven't been able to follow up on the others yet. So, at first glance, it seems the family shrunk pretty quickly.

I'd especially like to hear from you if you think you may be descended from the same line.

Regards,
Kevin Bowman
Michigan

I've discovered some more about this family but would still appreciate any further information regarding immigration and genealogy going back. Since there are so few Wagenknechts in the U.S., it would be nice to connect my family with others.

Here's what I have so far:
I first found Ch & Mary Wagenknecht on 1870 Census, in Toledo, OH:
Wagenknecht, Ch age 41 b. Baden
Mary age 31 b. Baden
Sophia age 16 b. Baden
Dorrity age 10 b. OH <-- My g-grandmother
Charles age 6 b. OH
August age 3 b. OH
Lewis age 1 b. OH
Geist, Eliza age 70 b. Baden <-- could this be MIL?

It can be deduced from this data that they immigrated to the US between 1854 and 1860 (between birth of Sophia and Dorrity). I also know that Dorrity (aka Dora) was born 10Oct1860 so it's possible they came over while Mary was pregnant and also might have missed the 1860 census (as I have yet to find any evidence of the family in 1860).

Then, after MUCH digging, I found the family on the 1880 Census in Toledo, OH, listed as WAGNER!
A.C. Wagner age 51 b. Mecklinburg (both parents also b. Mech.)
Mary age 39 b. Meck. (both parents b. Mech)
Charly age 16 b. OH
August age 13 b. OH
Lewis age 11 b. OH
Mary age 9 b. OH <-- aka Maryann (from other source)
Albert age 4 b. OH

There seems no doubt these are the same family. My best guess as the the father's name is Charles August (why he's listed as A.C. is a mystery). It seems that Charles (the son) and perhaps Lewis kept the surname Wagenknecht, as I have seen some evidence of this on later census', while Albert may have taken Wagner, but I'm not entirely certain of this.

If you have any further information on this branch, please reply.

Regards,
Kevin Bowman
Michigan

Re: Wagenknechts of OH (was Wagenknechts of MI)

I have posted a pruned GEDCOM file of my Wagenknecht line to the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project database. You can find it here: [http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...] or search for Carl Wagenknecht (there will be only 10 results - not hard to find the right one). This is the culmination of my research over the last year.

I'm still interested in hearing from anyone who might be connected to this line - either ancestors of Carl Wagenknecht (b. 1826) or wife Mary, siblings, or descendents. I'm especially interested in learning about connections to other Wagenknecht lines in the US.

Regards,
Kevin Bowman

Re: Wagenknecht's from Hesse Darmstadt

My Wagenknechts emigrated to Toledo, OH in 1856 but as far as I know they are from Mecklinberg. I have no idea where that is relative to Hesse Darmstadt. You have, however, mentioned some common names in the family. The oldest male I have been able to identify in this line is Carl August Wagenknecht b. 1826 in Mecklinbug. He also went by Charles Wagner. Two of his sons were Charles and Louis. There was a daughter Carline (or Carolina) who died an infant.

At any rate, I'm interested in learning about any brothers or other family members that may have come the US as well Carl's ancestry.

If you think any of this may be useful to you (I have a fairly complete descendency from Carl) please let me know.

Regards,
Kevin Bowman

Wagenknecht

Searching for Wagenknecht ancestry. Grandmother was Elsa Wagenknecht Bodenhausen of St. Joseph, MO. Known siblings were John, Frederich or Fritz, Lenore, Irene Regena. Both parents were born in Germany. She was born in MO. Groenke and Dettmer were related somehow.
