Jacob and Abraham Waggoner ARE from Germany. Two groups of Wagners/Waggoners came to America. Jacob and Abraham are descendents of Henry Waggoner who arrived in Virginia about 1740. Three brothers were Henry I, Jacob, and Michael. To verify this, go to "300 years of Waggoners" to see many of their descendants! They were part of the second wave of Palatinates who came from the Bavaria/Alsace Lorraine area of Germany. The other group of Wagners came later and were from Prussia which is the northern part of Germany. Some people just don't know their genealogy well enough to speak for both families. It is not believed (currently) that the two families are related but some of the Waggoners in later years changed their spelling to Wagner which is the traditional way to spell it.

Sheila,
I know you're tied up at the moment, but wanted to tell you something interesting as I noticed you're also researching NICHOLS. We have done DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA and the only family with which we match so far is a Nichols line! A representative from that line and I have been in discussion about it...it's a very close match and we most likely share a common ancestor within a genealogically relevant time period. Yet, we have had no clue where and when my Elza Waggoner's line interconnected with the Nichols line. Now, I see Nichols in your research and it throws up a huge red flag. And, especially when I see Bear River, NS mentioned because that's where so many Hessians received land grants following their service in the American Revolution. Am I on to something here? Do you know of any direct male descendant from Phillip (and potentially Gottlieb) who we could y-DNA test...that could tell us if our two lines match? Here's the link to the FTDNA results...ours are the only Elza Waggoner listed. Let me know what you think when you get a chance. Hope all is well with the grandbaby!
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/wagner/results

Hi Sheila! Take your time...nothing more precious than a sweet little 9 mo. old...I will add you and family to our prayers, that the doctors will be able to help and heal her. My not-so-little anymore (age 12) daughter had a hole in her heart for many years and it just recently closed up on its own, unexpectedly. God can work miracles and love can do anything! Please let me know how she's doing.

I will actually be down a few days myself after some surgery tomorrow. But, this has me laughing that at how many years now after our first contact, still here we are! I've been circling all of these Wags (there are just so many spellings, that "Wags" is easier) all of this time, with no matches, only to end up back here. We are in the process of testing (y-DNA) someone from the Adam Waggoner lineage in Montgomery Co., VA...not sure how it will turn out. But, I'm drawn back to the Elzas in your line and when I heard the Gottlieb/Hessian thing, it just raises such a large red flag. I'm simply convinced that the Hessian story has some kernel of truth and it explains why our elder Wags weren't keen on passing down our history prior to our Kentucky "immigrant," Oliver. (Oliver's father was our Elza.) Anyway, if you guys know of a confirmed direct male descendant from your line, we could determine once and for all with DNA testing, merely a cheek swab, if we have a relevantly close connection. I may even be willing to chip in some with the cost. If you go to FTDNA at the following link, click on y-results at the top of the page, you can see the various Wags who have tested. You'll see our Elza listed in the R1b group. I splurged and did the full 67 marker test, which is a high marker count, more than Ancestry offers, although we also have results at Ancestry.

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/wagner

In the meantime, a cousin has discovered a potential connection with the VIRGIN family of southwestern PA. Rezin Virgin (1750-1825) had a son named Elzey and there are a succession of Elzey/Elzas following him. Very early in its history, Rezin and family moved to KY and are buried in Greenup Co. We think our Waggoner line knew them in Fayette Co., PA, if not in Bedford or maybe even in MD earlier, and eventually, they all ended up in Kentucky. If he was a Hessian, I've studied them enough to know that Gottlieb would've been in MD and PA at one time...and his various children fanned out west. All speculation right now, of course, but it just seems that our lines with the common names must connect somehow.

So, when you get the chance, let me know what you think and maybe we can piece this thing together, or at least rule in or out a bloodline connection.

Again, I'll keep you in my prayers...genealogy is a great distraction...therapy of sorts. :)

I am still here!, I don't have my notes in front of me now, but I will as soon as I can look and see if I possibly have anything added since then. I also have Wag's as you call them, in Kentucky, it's actually a different line, but I think they all may be related. It's difficult, but one Wag family is of my husband and the other is on my side.
It will probably take me a bit of time to get back to you, My 9 month old grand-daughter is a heart patient and her heart stopped for 40 minutes today, she is now stable, but my time will be wrapped up in this precious gift.
But! I will get back in touch, may be sooner then I think, just to keep my mind occupied, but I will get back in touch!

Sheila

Hi! It's me again...it's now Oct. 2009...did I give you enough time? :) Just joking. But, I'm back to this line in Indiana with the Elzas in it. We've done y-DNA testing with one of my cousins, a direct male descendant, and perhaps we could compare with someone in your line to determine for certain if we're closely related. ?? Please let me know if you're still there, if you've learned more about Gottlieb's lineage and if y-DNA testing would be a possibility. Thanks!

I tried sending an e-mail, but it bounced... George H. Waggoner (28 Aug 1862 - 28 July 1927) was the second husband of Flora Pohland McVay. They had two known sons: Clarence and Lavelle, which I have tried unsuccessfully to track, until I found you. George H. was the son of George W. Waggoner who was my ggg uncle. George W.'s brother, Oliver Waggoner, was my gg grandfather and I've worked on that line for almost 20 years now, finding little about George H. I'd love to discuss this with you...please feel free to e-mail me or reply here. Thanks!

Which two Waggoner lines do you have? I descend from a Hans Wagner/John Waggoner who was in SC by 1730. He's our brick wall, as we don't know where he came from. His son Isaac Waggoner b. in Fairfield Co. SC 9/11/1761, served in the Rev. War. I've never heard that he was a Hessian, his father having been in America prior to the Rev. War. Isaac and his large family moved to Rutherford Co. NC between 1790 and 1800, and then in 1828 most of them went to Moultrie Co, IL, SE of Springfield. My brother is a direct male descendant and might be willing to participate, if our ancestors are part of the two Waggoner lines you have found so far. Do you have to be a member of Ancestry to participate? Neither of us is. I can easily access them through my local library. While he's interested, he's still working and doesn't have time to actively do genealogy regularly.

Bill,

Are you looking for Sarah's descendants? Then the Waggoner book may not help, even if that's your Waggoner family. It only carries the lines of the writers down to the time they wrote. It lists my grandfather Virgil Waggoner, b. 1888, but stops there. I'm not sure it even gives his siblings. My dad wrote a follow up in the 1980s putting the narrative of the 1929 book for his branch into chart form, much easier to follow, showing where the holes are, and following the descendants as far as his writing. I've got the data since then for the lines closest to me, but not the more distant ones.

I'm a scatter-shot genealogist, not very systematic, I'm afraid. I did take the book written by a cousin of my dad's on his mother's family to a family reunion last weekend and ran around getting all the info people could remember to fill in the 25 years worth of descendants--and email addresses so they could look up the rest! I'll do the same this coming weekend at the reunion of my mom's family.

Well, hope this is helpful in general terms. Do tell us which Waggoner family you're from.

Doris

The Ancestry link wouldn't let me in. The Family Tree link worked. It said there were, I think, 47 already tested. It didn't say how many gene pools they'd already found. For another family I'm investigating, there are 27 or so, in two distinct families. My brother is in a direct Waggoner line. I think I'll ask him if he's willing to be involved in the Family Tree tests.

I'm registered with Ancestry but not a paid subscriber. I find I can almost never use or get access to anything useful. I go to the library when I decide I need something badly enough. But if others are using Family Tree it makes sense to use them too.

Where is Rowan, NC? One son of my Hans Wagner/John Waggoner, Isaac Waggoner, my ancestor, moved from SC to Rutherford Co. NC between 1790 and 1800. He stayed there until 1828 when he and most of his large family moved to Moultrie Co, IL, SE of Springfield, where he lived until his death in 1838. The early generations had large families, and while later generations spread all over the country, Moultrie Co. was the center of this clan for for a century.

Since Hans was in SC before your ancestor, and the other Wag you found, both in MD, I doubt there's a connection. But there's only one way to find out. And Hans is our brick wall and DNA research IS one way to try to move that brick wall back. If you'll find out if he needs to join Ancestry, I'll ask my brother if he'll do it. Increasing the pool of Wags taking the test is helpful in general. Interestingly, we have at least one Elzie in our family. I don't think that can have been a common name, even at the time.

Re: Sarah (Sally) L. and Nellie Waggoner

I don't know anything directly, but here are some Waggoner clues.

Do you know where Jacob and Sally's mother were from? The 1880 census should tell you. Can you find other census years for them? Can you find census data for Jacob? You may have two wives for him because he married twice--makes for confusion.

Do you have the 1922/1929 Waggoner book that's been discussed on this list? Check the Archives if you don't. It has lots of info on Hans Wagner (John Waggoner) and his descendants. He's also been discussed at length, some years back. One of his two sons, Isaac Waggoner, b. 1761 in Fairfield Co. SC, ended up in Moultrie Co. IL, SE of Springfield, by 1828. "Jacob" appears occasionally in this large family. On the other hand, there is another family that started with a Jacob Waggoner in PA, about the same time as Hans Wagner. Many of his descendants ended up in IL in the first half of the 19th C. They seem to have lots of "Jacobs." Knowing which, if either, your family derives from may help. Of course there are many Waggoner families --500 in the 1790 census, for starters, according to the 1922 book, before that census got burned. Hans is my brick wall, so I don't know if his family and the Jacob in PA are related. I'd guess not, since the original Jacob and my Hans seem to be contemporaries.

"Eunice" may help too. My family (Hans) has had a Eunice from a ggg grandmother who married in prior to 1813 down to my great-aunt. It's not a common name so if you've got any in your ancestry besides the one you name that may be another clue. The "Morrison" in your grandfather's name may point to Sarah's mother's maiden name. Or if you know what the middle initials of her other children stand for, they may also give similar clues. Good luck.

I have been interested in the testing. My Waggoner line goes back to John/Jess Waggonner/Waggoner b about 1792 in Rowan NC. He moved to Missouri, then to Arkansas and finally to Louisiana where he died between 1860-1870.
I have an uncle who is a direct descendant and if I sent him the kit, he would do the testing. I'm a little reluctant to spend the money because another direct descendant from another line did the testing. Unfortunately, he got a lot of confusing information.

Doris, you have talked about the Waggoner families enough that you have my curiosity up. I don't have a "Virgil, b 1888" but I have a Virgil Waggoner b 1869 and a Virgil Boone Waggoner b 1897. I descend from Henry Waggoner b 1730 Germany d 1809 Russell co. VA. My separate line branches off from Michael Waggoner, Henry's 4th son whose 7th child was Michael Waggoner b 1818 in TN or VA. Can you tell me which states your Waggoners are from?

Michelle, my e-mail was addressed to Doris. Without a probate or a will, the early census records do not give the names of children. John Waggoner b 1792 could not possibly be the father of my Michael Waggoner b 1818. John's wife was Elizabeth Ann Green b Feb 11, 1785 in TN and their 8 children were James b 1814 in Fayette, IN, John b 1815 Fayette, IN, Lot b 1817, Noah b 1820, Michael b 1822 (NOT MINE) Samuel b 1825 in Rush IN, Thomas b 1828 Rush IN and Abram b 1830 in Rush, IN. Also, This John b 1792 was in Sullivan TN. The John Waggoner of my line was born in Russell VA March 17, 1784. Some researchers have badly mixed these lines up. Also, you have my private e-mail and can discuss my family line with me privately. I would appreciate that favor. Linda

Michael Waggoner b. 1818 as son of John Waggoner d. 1830 Russell Co., VA

Linda,

John Waggoner who presumably d. aft 1830 in Russell Co., VA, was apparently the son of Henry Waggoner d. bef 1810 (Russell Co., VA). On the 1830 census of that county, John is listed as being 70-80 years old. On the 1840 census of that county, neither John nor his family of Waggoners remains.

I believe that the Michael b. 1818 (Virginia) d. abt 1885 (Lawrence Co., IN) is the son of John Waggoner and not the son of Michael d. 1824 in Sullivan Co., TN. John's brothers Jacob and Henry had migrated to Indiana abt 1819. The elder Michael's widow, Mary Ann, and family stayed in Sullivan Co., TN aft Michael's death in 1824 and for decades. You will find them on the 1830, 1840, 1850 censuses, etc.

I believe the family living with Mary Ann on the 1830 and 1840 Sullivan Co., TN censuses is son John A. b. 1791, his wife Catharine, and their children Suzanne b. 1807, Elizabeth b. 1810 and Martha b. 1820, and son James Melville Waggoner b. 1819. In 1830, Mary Ann's son George b. abt 1800 (single) is also apparently there. George married Anna Greenway abt 1834.

On the 1830 of Russell Co., VA, the record for John Waggoner age 70-80 lists:
one male age "under 5" (b. 1825-30)=unknown
one male age 10-15 (b. 1815-20)=Michael
one male age 15-20 (b. 1810-1815)=Robert
two females 20-30 (b. 1800-1810)=unknown
one female 40-50 (b. 1780-1790)=Sarah/Sally

On the 1840 of Martin Co., IN, the record for HH, Sally Waggoner, shows
one male 15-20 (b. 1820-1825)=unknown
two males 20-30 (b. 1810-1820)=Michael and Robert
one female 20-30 (b. 1810-1820)=unknown (other one married? Elizabeth who m. Levi Thomas Brock 17 Jun 1841, Lawrence Co, IN?)
one female 50-60 (b. 1780-1790)=Sarah/Sally

There is a marriage record, date 14 Jun 1841 (Daviess Co., IN) for Michael Waggoner, and Mariah Osborn who died abt 1849.

On the 1850 of Martin Co., IN, the household of Michael Wagoner shows
Sarah age 70 (b. 1780)
Michael age 33 (b. 1817)
John Wagoner age 8
Amy Wagoner age 6
Charles Wagoner age 4
Henry Wagoner age 2

I've started a Waggoner/Wagoner/Wagner y-chromosome (direct male descendant) DNA project on Ancestry. So far, we've tested four men and they appear to be from two different lines -- two men from each. My known cousins matched exactly, while the the other two men, who differed from my line, matched each other exactly. Both families are rumored to have descended from Hessians in the Revolution. Ancestry is running a great deal now for 43 marker testing. I'd love to have more numbers to compare...if interested, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss. Thanks!

Here's the link for the DNA FAQ at Ancestry: http://dna.ancestry.com/faq.aspx In a nutshell, it says you have to be a registered user of Ancestry to get a test and view the results, however, you do not have to be a paid subscriber.

Another option: There is a larger Waggoner/Wagoner/Wagner project on FamilyTreeDNA for which I'm about to purchase a test for my male descendant - one of the ones I had tested at Ancestry - Scott Waggoner. FTDNA is probably the best place for DNA research on the 'net, but Ancestry was sufficient as a much less expensive screening tool.

Here are the links to my Waggoner project on Ancestry as well as the Wagner (including all surname variations) on FTDNA. Eventually, as the pool becomes larger, maybe it will help us break down our brick walls.

Ancestry: http://groups.ancestry.com/site/44419009/
I'm not sure if this will put you in the right place or not if you're not a registered user. Just let me know if it doesn't work.

FTDNA: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Wagner
This is the one I'm going to join and order from.

Re: DNA testing

Lineage #1 goes back to my ggg grandfather, Elzie Waggoner (bc 1800 in MD - d. 1840's in PA) and I'm still trying to determine his father. Family oral history says his father was a Hessian. Along those lines, the man I had thought the most likely to be his father, Lineage #2 - is Christopher Waggoner who first appears in Allegany Co., MD in 1792. We believe this man was actually a Hessian named Johann Christoph Waggoner, a chaplain in the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment in the Revolution. However, after conducting y-chromosome testing on two direct males from my line and comparing with two confirmed direct male descendants of Christopher, they do not match. We have no recent common ancestor. So, I have four 43-marker y-chromosome tests which have been done and with which I will allow anyone researching Wags to compare. So, thought I'd post for anyone who's interested to join. I'm not sure whether you have to be a member on Ancestry to get a kit and test. While I doubt that we have any recent direct connection to your Hans, perhaps there's a connection further back in time and DNA might discern that. It's up to you, but you're welcome to join and take a look at the DNA results I have.

I am also trying to prove Isaac Waggoner b. 1799 and married Mary Magee. They had a daughter Catherine who married Samuel Russell McWilliams. I need Isaac's parents. They were all from PA. I think.

New webpage that includes information on the Adam C. Waggoner line

I am in the process of designing a webpage on my Ambrose family and I have included some information on the Waggoner family as well. Grant Waggoner was killed in a gun battle that involved my g-grandfather, Frank Ambrose and his brother Bill. Cul Garrett was the one who killed Grant and I have located the actual court documents from the murder trial that includes death bed statements from both Grant Waggoner and Cul Garrett. I have included them in a book I have written about the feud that occured in Carroll County, Arkansas and Stone County, Missouri in the 1880's. I would love some input from the Waggoner family and would be happy to include any comments or information that the Waggoner's would like to share. I will create a page on my website for the Waggoner's if they would like to post any of their information. You can log on to my website (and remember, this is a work in progress. I am an amateur on web design, so there is more than likely several mistakes) The site is www.bloodontheborderbook.com. Please log on an give me your opinion on how to include the family histories of the families involved.

Sarah (Sally) L. and Nellie Waggoner

I'm looking for information on Sarah L. (Sally) Waggoner (5 Aug 1854 - 16 Aug 1905) and her sister Nellie (abt 1863 - ?). They are listed in the 1880 census as living in St. Louis, Missouri with Sally's husband, John E. Wilson (12 Feb 1853 - 17 Mar 1922). He was a policeman who eventually rose to the rank of captain. Sally and John had six children: Grace L. Wilson (Dec 1875 - 6 Nov 1896), Eunice Elizabeth Wilson (22 Dec 1878 - 21 Sep 1880), William Morrison Wilson [my grandfather] (2 Apr 1883 - 10 Jul 1947), Mae H. Wilson (21 Sep 1887 - 15 Jan 1966), Joseph E. Wilson (1894 - ?), and John E. Wilson (1895 - ?)

Sarah and Nellie's parents may have been Jacob Waggoner (abt 1830 - ?) and his wife Louisa (abt 1835 - ?), although Sarah's obituary lists her mother as Mary Gray.

Doris,

I know who several of Sarah Waggoner's descendants are (I'm one of them, of course). When I mentioned the LDS site not showing descendants, I was thinking that the various Jacob Waggoners on it would often have their ancestors shown in a family tree, but not their descendants, making it hard to know which Jacob might be Sarah's father. I'll keep trying, though.

Bill

Doris,

Thanks very much. I'll look into all your suggestions. I didn't know about the Waggoner book. I have been using the LDS website for a lot of searches, but it mostly shows ancestors, not descendants.

I had wondered where the Morrison name came from. My grandfather's family called him that, as did my grandmother, but his friends called Bill. I hadn't thought that it might be his grandmother's maiden name.

Again, many thanks for your reply and all the information.

Bill Wilson
