Re: Wagner

Hi Fred,

Your wife and I are third cousins through Leibel line.

Here is what I know - Mathias Wagner (born 1852) and Katherine Unknown (born 1855) emigrated from Elsass, Kutschurgan, Odessa, Russia on Sept 12, 1899 on the Ship: Saale. With them were a Felix Wagner (born 1876) and his bride, Rosina (born 1877) and his siblings - Cecilia, Marianna, Julianna, Mathias and Valentine.(www.ellisisland.org) There were Wagner families in Elsass, Kutschurgan, Russia. GRHS has more information.

The Wagners first went to Emmons, North Dakota. Then they moved to Park, Gove County, Kansas, where Felix and Rosina's first daughter was born: Katherina in 1902. They later moved back to Emmons, North Dakota. They then made another move, this time across the border to Reward, Saskatchewan, Canada where Mathias and Felix homesteaded. In 1921, Katherine married Peter Volk, son of Martin Volk and Pulcheria Leibel. (Heritage of Hope, 1905 - 1983, Denzil and Reward Historical Society, Page 585, also available on www.ourroots.ca)

Mathias passed away in 1929 and Katherine in 1931 and both are buried in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Reward, Saskatchewan, Canada. Rosina passed away in 1927 and is also buried in the Holy Rosary Cemetery. Felix passed away later in 1940 and is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Tramping Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. Peter Volk passed away in 1934 and Katherine in 1944 and both are buried in Denzil, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Now here is the interesting part, Rosina was a Hopfinger, born in 1877; my Great Grandfather, Michael, was born in 1871. The Hopfingers were from Selz, Kutschurgan, Odessa, Russia. Rosina and Michael ended up settling only one town away from each other. Were they cousins or siblings?

So it seems that we are doubly related.

Hello Cousin!
Tanya BrosHopSos

Re: Jacob F. Wagner Possible Connection to Composer Wagner

I suspect this is a common story among Wagners, as we had it, also, and I also can find no link.

there is a book written by Richard Wagner's grandson, and it does expose some "dirty laundry", disclosing Richard's strong ties to Hitler, so I for one am very glad to have disproved the family story.

we also have Ross ancestry and a family story of descending from Betsy Ross, the woman said to have sewn the first American flag (it is fairly well disclaimed), but Betsy had no children by her husband, who's given name eludes me at the moment, and she was a Griswold. so we don't descend from her. however, her husband may be a distant cousin, I can't get back past 1817 on my Ross's and don't have much for them in the 1800's as is.

we also have that our Wagner ancestor was a sea Captain, but so far I've found him no higher in rank than mate, and usually just seaman.

my husband's grandmother told him fascinating tales of fighting the Indians, but when he did some research he found the stories, verbatum except for names, in the newspaper of the day.

so those family stories, whatever they may be, have to be treated with suspicion-but not erased entirely out of hand.

our ancestors liked a yarn or two, and it didn't help that some of them embelished the genealogy as well. my family stories came from my grandmothers, and so far I'm finding most of it is nothing more than wishful thinking. not that they don't have all sorts of connections. both have DAR ancestry, one has DGW, but I'm not into all of that, it was a big thing for them to be "upper class" and have all those letters after their names, so they stretched things a bit above and beyond the truth.

Jacob F. Wagner Possible Connection to Composer Wagner

Hello,

While researching my Wagner line, it keeps coming up among various family members that my 2nd great grandmother Sophia Wagner, is related to the composer Richard Wagner. I have found a few of his family trees, but nothing linking him yet to my Jacob F. Wagner b. 1858 in Germany.

I would love to know more, but Jacob is currently one of my brick walls. According to another family member, there should be something archived in The Detroit News regarding Sophia and her relationship to the composer or something of that nature. Sophia was born in 1889 in N.Y. and came to Michigan and died in the 1960's. I have searched what is available online and cannot find anything.

Any ideas?

Angelique

Jacob F. Wagner & Mary/Maria B. Plemenik-Wahler, Germany & New York

Hello,

I am looking for information on my Wagner line. My 2nd Great-Grandmother is Sophia Julia Bertha Wagner. Her father is Jacob F. Wagner b. Abt. 1858 in Germany and her mother is Mary/Maria B. Plemenik-Wahler b. Abt. 1864 in Germany. These spellings of the surnames names are from Sophias birth (9/25/1889), marriage (1911) and death (Michigan) records.

When trying to locate more information on her parents, I can find Sophia listed (as "Wagoner") in the 1900 census in Schenectady, New York, but she is living with her uncle, Henry G. Bowman. His wife is listed as Pauline J. Bowman (b. Sept. 1865 on census) and her parents are from Germany. I am guessing she (Pauline) is either Jacob or Mary/Maria's sister since Sophia is listed as the niece on the census.

I cannot seem to find Sophia on the 1910 census or find anything about her parents at all.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

Angelique

hi Scott,

Frank Catanach was my husband, Brian's, grandfather. His wife was Kay, you are correct. My mother in law, Patricia, was their daughter. Kay and Frank were so nice. I knew them for a few years before they passed away. Brian and I have been together since 1990. Kay died in 1996 and Frank in 1998. I can't believe how time flies.

I know what you mean about curiosity. That's what got me started with my Wagner (my maiden name) line 7 years ago.

I'm going to let Pat know you contacted me, if you don't mind, and give her your email.

Have a good day
Kate

I think that I may be a distant relative. My name is Scott Finley and I am the youngest of 5 children born to Charles Q. Finley and Beatrice Catanach. My Grandads name was Wallace Catanach, and his childrens names were Wallace and my great-uncle Frank, that I know of. My grandmother Loisa, died shortly before my mom (Beatrice) in 1963, and Grandpop then married Helen, who is the grandmom that I remember, and I also have fond memories of my great-uncle Frank and his wife, Kaye (sp.?)I can go on and on with the similiarities of the names in my family and the ones you spoke of in your message.
Just want to say hi, this is out of the blue, but I was thinking of my Dad, Charles, who passed away last October, and I thought i would get online and do a little searching :). My Dad was notoriuosly secretive about his parents, so evey once in awhile my curiousity gets the best of me.
Bye for now!
Scott G.
Re: Wagner's in Knoxville, TN area

The assumption that James Melville Wagner was the son of Michael Waggoner comes from loose analysis of some information on an 1881 court record when heirs and descendants of Michael (d. bef Jan 1825) were suing over a tract of land in Sullivan Co., TN. A "J. M. Wagner" is mentioned and it is (probably correctly) assumed he is the same as James Melville. However, his relationship is not noted there.

I will try to show how I've come to believe he is Michael's grandson.

As far as his parentage, he was born abt 1820, too late to be the son of elderly Michael and Maryann Waggoner. However, he fits as the young male living with head of household Maryann in 1830 and 1840. Maryann's son, John A. Wagoner (b. abt 1791), and his family are living with Maryann on both of those censuses (per the 1850, they are named [wife] Catharine, [daughters] Susannah, Elizabeth and Martha) including a male b. abt 1820. (Also, in 1830, Maryann's son George is also apparently in Maryann's household. In 1840, George is on his own and newly married).

James Melville married in 1846, so he does not appear on the 1850 with his father John. His first child Isabell/Arabella was b. in 1847 in North Carolina. James and wife Mary E. (Brown) are found on the 1860 census for South Division, Davidson Co., North Carolina, with four children all born in NC.

Please note: An on-site search for Wagner wills at the Sullivan Co., TN courthouse only produced one, for a Jacob Wagner d. 1866. All wills prior to 1838 burned during the Civil War, so any will that Michael Waggoner left no longer exists, although people write about it as though they've seen it. Instead: we know, from the surviving deed books, that Michael's heirs received parts of his 2000 acre tract in "ninths," indicating that there were nine heirs (it is always possible that some may have been grandchildren especially if their parents had already died). This info is found in deeds where certain heirs are selling their ninth to another Wagner. Other court documents may indicate relationships between the heirs, and I am still doing research on those.

It's apparent that James Melville ("J. M.") and Martha A. Wagner were defendants in that 1881 court record, the suit between them and the family of George Wagner (Michael's original heir), dec'd, because their father (whom I theorize was John b. 1791, another of Michael's original heirs) had already passed away (1870-1880).

Here is a transcription of that court record:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anna Wagner and others
Vs.
J.M. Wagner Adm. And others
This cause comes on to be heard on this the 1st day of July 1881 before the [illegible] W.C. Smith Chancellor upon the pleadings and proofs and the agreement of the parties heretofore had and made by and between the parties to this suit and which agreement is in the words and findings following to wit:
In compromise and settlement of the matters involved in this cause it is agreed that Complainants Anna Wagner, Andrew Hicks and wife Susannah, Polly Greenway, Rachel Wagner, Michael Wagner and Emaline Wagner being the following described tract of land to wit: Beginning at an Elm running South West to the top of the cliff to a marked sugar tree, thence to the river at the lower end of Goose Island thence with the meanders of the river to the beginning containing 28 to 30 acres more or less as Tenants in Common except as the Complainant Anna Wagner who will only take a Dower interest in said land, the Complainants take this parcel of land in full satisfaction & discharge of all claim in the Adm. J.M. Wagner.
The defendant J.M. Wagner pays all costs of the cause and the fee of Complainants Solicitors. Upon payment of the costs and council fees as herein before provided this cause will be dismissed.
Anna Wagner
Michael Wagner
Emaline Wagner
William Hicks
Sussannah Hicks
Polly Greenway
Rachel Wagner
Celise Hicks
J.M. Wagner
M.A. Wagner
And said instrument and agreement having been proved by the subscribing witnesses thereto in open court: it is therefore ordered adjudged and decreed that said agreement be and is made the decree of the Court in this cause & that all the right title claims & interest of the other parties to this cause in & to the said 28 or 30 acres of land mentioned & described in said agreement be & the cause is divested out if these & vested in said Anna Wagner: Michael Wagner Emaline Wagner William Hicks Susannah Hicks Polly Greenway Rachel Wagner and Celise Hicks their heirs and assigns as a lawful inheritance in fee but the estate or interest of said Anna Wagner is only a dower interest and it is further ordered and adjudged and decreed that said Complts have no further or other interest in said land or 2000 acre tract known as the old Michael Wagner tract in the 20 civil district of Sullivan County adjoining the lands of A. Gregg, Jacob Latture, Josiah Hodges & no further or other claims as heirs at law and distributus of the Estate of said John & Jacob Wagner decd. But such claims or interest shall issue to the benefit of said Defts J.M. Wagner & Martha Wagner. And it is also ordered adjudged and decreed that all the rught title claims & interest of said parties to said agreement and of all the parties to this suit be & be the same is divested out of these & vested in the said Deft Martha A. Wagner her heirs and assigns in fee simple: and the master will make deeds to the said parties declared entitled to said 28 or 30 acres and for the residue of said tract to the said Martha A. Wagner release this application therefore and [illegible] Payment of the legal fees for such service. And upon this application the master will issue writs of possession of said parties to place them in the full and peacable possession of said premises as they are entitled to under this decree. It is furthur ordered and decreed that Deft J M. Wagner pay clerk costs of this cause for which an executive may issue
Sources:
Sullivan County, Tennessee Court Record of July 1, 1881
[Transcribed by Margaret Prasthofer-Lewis]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Martha (b. 1815-1818), daughter of John (b. 1791), appears on the 1880 census for Sullivan Co., TN, living alone, "single." Presumably she never married. Sullivan Co., TN Deed Book 42 page 294, records a transaction from Martha A. Wagner to J. M. Wagner "of Knox County [Tennessee]," 3 Oct 1888. Rev. James Melville Wagner died in Knox Co., 6 Jun 1890.

While I do not have absolute, solid proof (yet) that James Melville Wagner was the son of John b. 1791, I believe there is strong evidence here that supports this theory.

Re: DNA testing

This is the reply I just posted in response to someone on the Waggoner board...perhaps it explains more clearly:

Lineage #1 goes back to my ggg grandfather, Elzie Waggoner (bc 1800 in MD - d. 1840's in PA) and I'm still trying to determine his father. Family oral history says his father was a Hessian. Along those lines, the man I had thought the most likely to be his father, Lineage #2 - is Christopher Waggoner who first appears in Allegany Co., MD in 1792. We believe this man was actually a Hessian named Johann Christoph Waggoner, a chaplain in the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment in the Revolution. However, after conducting y-chromosome testing on two direct males from my line and comparing with two confirmed direct male descendants of Christopher, they do not match. We have no recent common ancestor. So, I have four 43-marker y-chromosome tests which have been done and with which I will allow anyone researching Wags to compare. So, thought I'd post for anyone who's interested to join. I'm not sure whether you have to be a member on Ancestry to get a kit and test.

DNA testing

I've started a Waggoner/Wagoner/Wagner y-chromosome (direct male descendant) DNA project on Ancestry. So far, we've tested four men and they appear to be from two different lines -- two men from each. My known cousins matched exactly, while the the other two men, who differed from my line, matched each other exactly. Both families are rumored to have descended from Hessians in the Revolution. Ancestry is running a great deal now for 43 marker testing. I'd love to have more numbers to compare...if interested, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss. Thanks!
