From North Carolina -- applied for land grant

Email between Don Welch and Bettye Bragg Wagstaff.
Don Welchadded this on 3 Aug 2008

From: donwelch11@comcast.net>

To: bfwag@windstream.net>

Sent: Saturday, July 26, 2008 10:42AM Subject: FW: The Wagstaff History

Mrs. Bettye Bragg Wagstaff,

My name is Don Welch of Las Cruces, NM. My 3rd Great-Grandparents are James Wagstaff and Mary Elizabeth Bigger (Biggers) through their son William W. Wagstaff and Caroline Williams. Mrs. Charlene Walker Brazell gave me your name and Email with the advice that you were a genealogist and very knowledgable about some of the early families in that area.

Actually, I have run across your name a couple of times before in my research. The first was when I visited Mrs. Amy Walker and her son Maurice there in Sabine county in 1980, a good many years past. I was visiting several different family names there, and in Shelby and Panola counties. I did learn some about the Williams line from Amy and she did mention your name but said that your were not in my Wagstaff line. i hesitated to just walk up cold to your door and Maurice could not help to introduce me. I stayed for the day then drove up to visit Norman and Daphne Bass near Hemphill.

Then some time back (lost track of when) , on the "king Family Tree", I saw an answer you had given Jackie King concerning the parents of Mary Aminta Wagstaff. Also, you said that Jame Wagstaff was buried at Paxton.

James is the line I am working on. He had two brothers - William and Richard. Their father was Allen Wagstaff. Since James' son William W. and Richard's son Nicholas were 1st cousins, then I think your husband (Robert?) and I are about 5th cousins. I guess I am after any information you might have about James Wagstaff - one thing would be any info on his headstone. if you are a professional genealogist, I am willing to pay.

A couple of years ago, a man names Dr. J. Van Wagstaff, NC answered a queary of mine with the result that he gave me names and histories of the Wagstaffs in Texas and beyond to Worcestershire, England from 1563. I had researched James for several years but could never bridge from him to the Wagstaffs in North Carolina. Van gave me the bridge. If this would be useful to you, I would be glad to give it.

A long letter here - I apologize for the length. Got to talking and couldn't stop.

Any, thanks - appreciate any help.

Don Welch - Las Cruces, NM - donwelch11@comcast.net>

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------

From: "robert wagstaff" bfwag@windstream.net> to donwelch11@comcast.net>

Subject: Re: The Wagstaff History. Monday, July 28, 2008 2:40:48 PM

Hi Don

I was really glad to get your email. I wish you had just knocked on my door "cold" about 1980. I would have enjoyed talking to you. Cjharlene flatters me to say that I am a genealogist! I guess I am a self taught family researcher. And I do not charge. I will be happy to share any info I have on the Wagstaff family. I have not done much research in the last four or five years because my husband had alzheimers and I took care of him until January of this year where I could not do it any more. he is now in a home where he is being taken care of. He will be 88 in Oct.

About James Wagstaff's headstone. It is a fairly new flat headstone of granite with only his birthday on it - 1817. Mary Elizabeth does not have a headstone but I have been told she is buried there beside him. She was alive in 1900 because she appears on the census in the home of W.W. and Caroline. It states Mary Wagstaff, Mother, born July 1822, age 77, widowed, born in Missouri, both parents born in Tennessee. I have not been able to find James on the census since 1850. Many people in Shelby County did not appear on the 1860 census that we know were there. I have been told that James died about 1863 but have not been able to verify that. Do you know if he served in the Civil War. W.W. enlisted at Shelbyville on 2 April 1862, Pvt. 1st Texas Lancers. Col. Horace Randall commanding. I neglected to say that they are buried in the OLD HOME CEMETERY near Paxton. My husbands maternal grandparents are buried there as well as many other relatives. They have a homecoming every year and we have attended that several times.

In the book, THE FIRST SETTLERS OF SHELBY AND HARRISON COUNTY, TEXAS, it states on page 25 that James Wagstaff received 6450 acres of land in Shelby County in Feb 1838 so we know he was there by 1838 and probably a little earlier. You had to apply for the land in person.

Robert's grandfather, Nicholas R. Wagstaff, married Mary Elizabeth Hutto, dau of George Solomon Hutto and Fannie Oates. James J. Wagstaff married Eliza Jane Hutto, the sister of Mary Elizabeth Hutto Wagstaff. Then after Fannie Oates Hutto died, George Solomon married Mary Arminta Wagstaff, daughter of James and Mary Biggers Wagstaff! James J. and Eliza Jane later moved to San Augustine County aroud Broaddus. There is a large Wagstaff settlement there and it is near where we live. We hav attended one or two of their reunions. As you can see I do not know a lot about James. I have the Shelby Co. written cnesus 1850 through 1920. Also some other tax books, probate book, etc. I would be happy to look anything up in those books. Let me know.

Sincerly,

Bettye WagstaffRoute 3, Box 3037Bronson, Texas 75937--------------------------------------------------------
Matt
Sorry about the spelling. in those early years there was most likely no money and they had to improvise, from memory he not only acted but rode a horse in the film. If you go to the national film and sound archive search the collection for "jack keane" 1949 you should find details of the film.

Roger

Hello Roger, Vernon Wagstaff is my grand father. Vernon died some years back. My father, Keith Wagstaff, has been in the film industry all his life and still is. When you say Waltsy Mattilda, do you mean Waltzing Matilda? I have never heard of Vernon acting? I know that he played a big part behind the camera but not in front of it?

Matt Wagstaff

Hi
My name is Roger Boulton I believe my grandfather "Jack Keane" and Vernon Wagstaff were partners in a company called film records Pty Ltd. They also made a small film I think in 1949 based on Waltsy Mattilda. I have a copy of this film in which Vernon played the part of the mounted policeman.
Regards

Roger Boulton

I don't know if this really helps, but, Thomas Wagstaff b 9/5/1808 (to Joseph Wagstaff & Jean Brown) married to Helen Kay had a daughter Susannah born 1851 in Loudoun. She married an Archibald Love of Kilmaurs in 1871 in Galston, Ayrshire and had at least 7 children. I can't see where Margaret fits in to all this or if this Love connection is a mere coincidence,

Bruce

SARAH ELIZABETH WAGSTAFF / ENGLAND

I am looking for information on a Sarah Elizabeth Wagstaff in England. I recently received a birth certificate for my husband's grandfather, Frederick Jobson born Nov 22, 1877 in Aston, Duddeston, County of Warwick. Sarah Elizabeth Wagstaff (Jobson) was listed as the mother, Henry Jobson the father. Frederick Jobson was a British Home Child sent to Canada with the Middlmore Home in June 1884. The information we have from the Middlemore Home was that his father was Henry Jobson but his mother was not named. I am trying to confirm that this was actually his birth certificate and would also like to know what happened to his parents or if he had any siblings. I have been unable to find any marriage information for Henry and Sarah Elizabeth.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, it is certainly the same Percy Wagstaff. My father-in-law, Keith Eltham, was Vernon's cousin. Keith's mother, Alice May Eltham (nee Wagstaff) was Percy's sister. Alice May's daughter,Joan and several other cousins have done a considerable amount of research. I spoke briefly to Peter Wagstaff yesterday and he has given Joan a CD of photos of Percy.
My husband, John and I have been living overseas and have only recently returned to melbourne.
Would love to be in contact to fill in the details of Vernon's family and update the family tree.
This is not a reply, more a request for information, I am researching the Offord Cluny War Memorial, on this there are two Wagstaffs:
A.T. Wagstaff and G or C Wagstaff (G on the memorial and C on the Roll of Honour), I believe A T to be Alfred Thomas Wagstaff born about 1886, but no death record found.
G or C Wagstaff no war record found.
I wonder whether these two appear on your tree ?
Herbert Norris

Hi. I don't have a lot of information. I know Dorothy's birthdate and date of her death, but not a lot of other info. I think her parents are John Turner and Stella McDonald, but I haven't been able to go any further than that. I know that Dorothy had 3 children, 2 by Harold James Hermance and 1 by Albert Glaser. I have more info on Albert, but Harold Hermance is a dead end.

Does any of this help? Do you have any other leads that you could share?

Thanks, Vickie

Hi Reg, it's me, Vickie (David's wife). I was poking around in Ancestry.com working on the Wagstaff line and I saw your posting (from 2004). I was hoping you had more than me, but I seem to have the same information you do. Darn. Do you have any family pictures that you could share? I really don't have much for David's line. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Vickie

Alfred WAGSTAFF - Engineer (Belfast and Homerton Terrace, Hackney)

I am seeking an Alfred WAGSTAFF married to a Lilie who had a daughter Eileen born in Belfast in 1918. At some time there may have been connections with Hackney. The only information I have on Alfred is that he was an engineer. On his daughter's birth certificate his wife is recorded as Lilie WAGSTAFF and no maiden name is given. I do not know whether WAGSTAFF was her maiden name and if she might have been Alfred's cousin, or if her maiden name simply wasn't recorded.

The family may be connected with a Stephen DAVIDSON and his wife Elizabeth Ann (nee WALKER) who were living in Homerton Terrace, Hackney during WW1. Stephen and Elizabeth Ann married in Belfast and Elizabeth came from Belfast. I did wonder if Lilie WAGSTAFF and Elizabeth might be sisters, or at least related because at some time Eileen WAGSTAFF was living with the DAVIDSONs.

So if anyone knows of my Alfred WAGSTAFF and Lilie I would be grateful. Could Lilie be Lilian or Lily or even Delilah or Elizabeth?

Regards

scurlockgirl

Hello,

I'm looking for information on Margaret Love who was living with Jean Wagstaff (M.S. Brown) during the 1841 c., at Main St, Newmilns (Loudoun, Ayr). According to Margaret's burial record (1846), Jean was her grandmother.

Her age was listed as "15" on the census. If this is correct she would have been born bet. 1822-1826. Others in the household were Hugh and Thomas Wagstaff.

We have not been able to determine who Margaret's parents were. What I have on Jean Brown and Joseph Wagstaff's children are listed, below.

If you have any information on our Margaret Love, please respond.
Wagstaff DNA Surname Project

Hello.
I just wanted to let you all know about the Wagstaff y-DNA project I started this year. So far I have only a couple of participants (my uncle, and cousin in Scotland), so I am posting this in hopes that other Wagstaffs (males) will be interested in partipating so that we can learn more about Wagstaff family history and lineages. The reason I started this project is that I need to confirm that my cousin and uncle descended from the same Wagstaff ancestor in Scotland - something we haven't been able verify via traditional genealogy research.

Because this is a y-DNA project only males with the Wagstaff surname are tested due to the y-DNA passed down from father to son. However, ladies, if you have a brother, father, uncle, etc. in your family that is a Wagstaff you are able to learn about your own lineage by having them tested (this is what I am doing via my uncle).

By tying what we know about our Wagstaff family histories to DNA results, with enough participation we will eventually be able to tie family lineages together. For example, my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather Joseph Wagstaff in Scotland is rumored to have immigrated from England. With enough participation from Wagstaff lineages in England we may be able to determine where Joseph came from since we have his DNA via my uncle and/or cousin.

If you are interested, check out our web site at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/w/wagstaff/rec.html
and this is another web site for the same project:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Wagstaff/

**For a reduced rate, the testing company, Family Tree DNA, is offering gift certificates of $30 off a 37 marker test and $15 off a 25 marker test through the end of December 08.**

I'm happy to discuss and address any questions you might have.

Cheers,
Trish Griffin

Hi julie
I have opened my Aldridge tree to you. I can't find a Cornelius or James B. but that doesn't mean they arn't there somewhere. William 1832 and his father John 1796, there is a 36 year gap from John being born till his first child is born, William, which is a long time as they started early with families, so a couple could be missing. Anyway have a look and let me know what you think, I don't have Thomas Birth Cert, will have to send for it.
Sue

dietabix@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Julie
First things first, the Wagstaff's are on my husbands side of the family.
George Wagstaff 1852 was my husbands Great Grandfather, he had a child with Eliza Aldridge 1857, a son Thomas Aldridge 1876, my husbands Grandfather. Eliza had another child Ann 1880,it looks as though George was the father ? Last thing we know is that Eliza went to America with her daughter, there has not been any contact with the Wagstaff's over the years, I think Thomas was brought by the Aldridge family.
Sorry that's all we know, unless you can fill any gaps in. Where do you fit in ?
Sue

Frances Wagstaff born in Ireland, abt 1802.

Hi All

I have hit a brickwall with my Carlton line. James Carlton married Frances Wagstaff. Both born in Ireland. Frances about 1802 (1841 census in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England)

I am guessing that Frances came to Bristol with James as i can't find a marriage there for them so maybe they married in Ireland.

They had 4 children:
William born 1827
George (my 3x Gt Grandfather) born 1831
Jane Ann born 1831
and Catherine born 1833.

Frances died in 1869.

Is there anyone out there who could possibly know this Frances?? Would love to know where in Ireland she originates from!

Cheers
Cat

I'm looking to find some type of Auto Court in Sacramento, California in 1938. I believe in 1937 he had a step daughter while living in Sacramento named Mary Ann Lane? I have been searching for a long time for some type of information. If anyone can e-mail something to go on it would be appreciated. Ella
