Texas Wahrmunds: Alfred & Albert?

I am trying to determine if Albert Wahrmund and Alfred Wahrmund are one and the same person, or if they were twins. The first mention of "Albert" Wahrmund is in the 1900 Federal Census, where he shows up as a musician on Cagayan de Misamis, Philippine Islands, with the Military and Naval Forces. According to the census record, he would have been born about 1878 in Texas.

The next mention of Albert is in the 1910 Federal Census for San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. A 29-year-old Albert Wahrmund is shown as a son in the household of Fanny Wahrmund. Also shown in the household is daughter-in-law Cora Wahrmund, among others. I know Fanny had a son named Alfred born about 1881, but the earliest census records don't mention an Albert.

To add to the confusion, Alfred Wahrmund, son of Fanny, is enumerated in the 1900 census in Bexar County. As mentioned before, Albert Wahrmund is shown as being in the Philippines in 1900.

The Texas Death Index lists two Alfred Wahrmunds; Alfred F., son of Gustav and Bertha, who died in Gillespie County in 1984, and Alfred John, son of Franz and Margarethe, who died in Kerr County in 1972. But it does not list a third Alfred, nor does it list an Albert Wahrmund.

I will be very grateful to anyone who can help me sort this out.

Texas Wahrmunds

I have begun work on what I hope will be a complete Texas Wahrmund genealogy. The story begins in Gillespie County, Texas with Johann Christian Wahrmund and his four sons; Phillip Ludwig Friedrich (Louis), Wilhelm Daniel Ferdinand (William), Carl Heinrich Emil (Emil) and Karl August (Carl or Charles). I am attempting to be as accurate as possible and base my facts on birth, marriage, death and census records (documented sources, in other words!). I have found that "grandma says" is not always an accurate source! :) I would be happy to hear from anyone in the family, and am especially interested in tracking down old photographs and documents. My husband's grandmother was Ida Mathilde Wahrmund Klein, daughter of Theodor Wahrmund and Anna Rischner.

I haven't come across any relatives who spell their name this way with the "h" yet, but I'm not ruling it out yet. Most of the family I know of (that being the key word) spell it Warmund, and immigrated around 1914 - 1924.
Sir, can be of no help on that subject. Sorry. WAHRMUND was an Anglo-Saxon warlord. WAHRMUND is Old German for "True Mouth." Have traced ancestry of WAHRMUND surname back to the Sixth Century, for what that's worth, which in your search isn't much.

Cordially,
Allen Ross Warmington, Former LT/USN
Cleveland, Ohio

Jay, I am just now seeing your message. My email has changed since my posting. What is your Dad's name? What is your Grandfather's name? I knew that some of the Wahrmunds went to California. If you give me this information, I can link you up with the rest of the family.

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Margaret Hill

I myself married a "Hill" and he has no relatives in this part of the country. Which Wahrmund are you researching?

Regards,
Margaret

Karl or Charles Wahrmund

Margaret,

I am very happy to hear from you. Your great, great grandfather Charles (Karl) was my great grandfather. Henry Theodor Wahrmund was a younger brother of my grandmother Augusta Wahrmund, born 1864 in Fredericksburg or nearby on the ranch.

It appears that all the American Wahrmunds are descended from Karl's parents Christian Wilhelm Wahrmund and his wife Wilhelmina Christina Meyers who arrived in Texas about January 2, 1846

We are relatives. Let's share information.
I am 73, widowed, 4 children, 7 grandchildren - all living in Laredo, Tx or San Antonio. I live in Laredo 50% and 50% in
Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico. I have an acquaintance named Meurer here in Laredo. Maybe he is also a relative.

Bert in Laredo

956 724 6731

Very exciting information. I had heard about "true mouth", but all of the rest is new to me. Thank you!!!!

I will try to access that web site.

It appears that we are very distant cousins - 40 or 50 generations removed. Anyway, I claim you as a Wahrmund cousin.

Where do you live? Tell me about yourself.

I live in laredo, Texas most of the time and part of the time in the mountains of central Mexico.

As far as I know, all Wahrmunds in the United States are descended from Wilhelm Christian Wahrmund and his wife,
Christina Wilhelmina Meyer. They left Weisbaden, Nassau, Germany in 1845 with their 4 sons and settled in Fredericksburg, Texas. They were my great great grandparents. Your Wahrmund was most likely a cousin of mine. I am leaving town tomorrow for 2 weeks. I will attempt to communicate more with you when I return.
Bert Kraus in Lardo, Texas

This is the first time I have heard of the spelling without the h.
It was common in earlier times for immigration officials to spell names on entry papers accoording to the sound. The immigrant then kept the incorrect spelling because that is what his official papers had. Maybe that is what happened. A

There are many Wahrmunds (with the h ) in the US, but not too many left in Germany. My Wahrmunds came from the duchy of Nassau in Germany. All of the US Wahrmunds that I have found immigrated to Fredericksburg, Texas in late 1845.
The ancestor who came with his family was Wilhelm Christian Wahrmund from Weisbaden. He had a brother who was a proffesor of oriental languages in Vienna. That brother had a son who was also a professor of oriental languages in Prague, Checkoslavakia. Maybe one their childred went to Poland. When did your ancestor immigrate to the US?
