Lawrence Phelps Waite

I am researching the young men from our village of Eastham, Wirral, UK who died in WW1 and one of them was Lawrence Phelps Waite. He was a pilot at the nearby Hooton Airfield, and was killed in a flying accident on July 16th 1918 and is buried in the churchyard here.
Does anyone have any information about Lawrence and his family that they would be willing to share with me?
He was the eldest son of Ralls Waite and Bessie Phelps Waite of Ingersoll, Ontario. Any information would be appreciated to help add a little bit more to the stories of the young men who are remembered in the village.
Thanks
Tracey

David married Sarah Lyons and Warren married Esther Felcher. The women were halfsisters. Another halfsister Florence Felcher married a Nelson Waite.

My Wait lineage is as follows: Thomas,b. 1601; Benjamin,b. 1644; Jeremiah, b.9/24/1684; Nathan, b.2/15/1711; Jeremiah, b.12/16/1742; Gad, b.9/8/1768; Eathon, b.5/23/1800; Charles, b.12/06/1835; William, b.5/1870; Douglas, b. 3/12/1888; William, living; Patricia, living.
Amoung my resources are two books, one written by Walter Knoll and the other, John Cassan. And internet sites such as Ancestry.com, familysearch.org. and rootsweb.com. There is so much info out there now. My newfound 2nd cousins in California and Illinois with their living family history have sealed our fate that I am a Wait descendant. (Even if they added the E on the back)
When I started to research my Father's family history I came across a free program from the LDS church that I use to keep records. It is called the Personal Ancestral File. (PAF) I have almost 700 names listed, not much compared to what is out there and I know this will be a lifelong project. I fill in names from the front of the line to the back of the line, based on what I am reading. All names are connected to the Wait family including families of early Wait spouses, since I was specifically looking for descendants of Thomas Wait, b. 1601. Thanks for your query and I would like to compare notes on your Waite family. What is your connection to Thomas 1601? That is the best place to start. The historical American side of the story unfolds from there or from his two brothers who spelled their last name “Waite”.

My father Jeffrey was born in Dump Jamaica and came to England in 1958.
William Waite is my Great Uncle. His father Robert Waite is my great grandfather. I my research I have only gone back as far as his father Frederick Waite, but cannot find any other information. From what Dad tells me the Waite family originated from England, while the Gentles side of the family came from India.
If you want any other info or have any info you want to share that would be great.
You mentioned in an earlier post 'Amy Ricketts' the name 'Ricketts' cropped up in some old research I have been doing, that a Sarah Waite married George Ricketts, but I am having trouble linking that to my own tree.
Hope you find this useful/

Hi Julie. Sounds like the right family to me as the oldest member of the family I could find was a William Thomas Waite, born about 1858 in Cirencester. I would love to see the photo of the infant Tom and his mother. I have a photo of Evelyn his mother I think, I am am not 100% sure it is her. She was my grandmother's niece and her mother died when Evelyn was about 7 I believe. She was then living with her grandmother and step grandfather in Wolverhampton. I have not been able to find any record of her in the UK after 1901 and I do not know how or when she went to the USA.
Can you please send the photo to me direct to
bassmancynan@aol.com
I look forward to hearing from you.
By the way, the name Herb Waite strikes a chord somewhere in the back of my mind. I will heve to contact my cousin, Jim to se if he can tell me more. Unfortuately he is suffering from the early signs of Altzheimers so he may not be able to help.
Thanks for contacting me.
Mike Davies

It seems from my research, that mosts Waite families in Wales originally came from England rather than having changed/altered their name from a Welsh name.

My husband's grandfather and his brother, for example, moved from Cirencester in England to Wales about 1885 before immigrating to Canada and the US respectively.
Julie Cline, wife of Herb Waite

I have a photo of the family of my husband's great uncle William Thomas "Tom" Waite taken in 1918 in PA. In the photo there is an INFANT who I am told is Thomas Waite - don't know a full name - being held by presumably his mother. He would be a grandson of "Tom". I would have to check with the family to see who his brothers might have been.

The grandfather came to the US from Wales, but was actually born in Cirencester, England. - Julie Cline, wife of Herb Waite

I am researching the Waites in Cirencester. My husband's grandfather John was born there in 1863. His father and grandfather were both named William. John had one brother William Thomas "Tom". Both brothers immigrated to Wales and then US and Canada.

I believe that grandfather John had a relative in Cirecester also named John - likely his uncle.

Have you found any connection to these names?
- Julie Cline, wife of Herb Waite

Hi Nyssa, absolutely go see your granddad...you'll be surprised at how much he'll actually remember. Just take a tape recorder or camcorder with you so you don't have to take notes. My daughters' great-grandmother remembere incredible detail about her grandparents and great-grandparents. I taped it all and took notes for hours. We'd never have gotten anywhere with her family without this interview. Once you talk to your grandfather...write me at swaitela@waitegenealogy.org. There's a very large active group in WGRF sorting out and working on the Pennsylvannia lines...we should be able to help you! Good Luck. Sue

I have many relatives from this area of PA and have a book on Waite genealogy titled "The Wacht/Wecht/Weight/Waite Family History" that was written by a cousin of mine who is now passed away. The book lists Margaret Wecht/Waite as born in approx 1822. She is listed as the daughter of Abraham Wecht/Waite and Sarah Williams. This book is published by the Masthof Press, 220 Mill Road, Morgntown, PA 16877. The book is listed under the Library of Congress Number 99-75195. Hope this helps. Rich Waite

Kathie,

I know your posting was quite a while back, but am writing in hopes that you are still accessing this site.

What I need, is the link between Peter McRoberts' wife, Eliza Waite, to the Waite's in Michigan. Do you know of any of the Waite men from Lorain County, going to St. Joseph County, Michigan, or to another county close by? Somebody sent me my son-in-law's tree several years ago, but the print out was lost around 10 years ago, when my daughter moved. She is married to a Waite man, who from what I was told, is descended from one of Eliza's relatives; either brother or cousin. If brother, then he is descended from Eliza's father. I have no information about her, except that she was married to Peter, one of my ancestor's brothers. My ancestor was James McRoberts, son of John McRoberts and Lucy Bradford.

Was Eliza's parents Samuel Waite and Susan Smith Clark? If so, then I'm related to Eliza too. I believe through her half-brother, Nahum.

Please feel free to e-mail me at almenami13@aol.com.

Patricia

I realize these posts are now aged, but I am very interested in these Brown/Layssard marriages of the next generation.
My great-great-grandfather William Brown of Virginia [b. July 7 1809] married in 1830 Halifax NC a Mary Louisa Vasseur who is the daughter of a Charlotte Anne Layssard [maiden surname]. I have little on this particular branch of Layssards, but Charlotte and her children move from Petersburg VA to Halifax NC around 1825 and they are in company with a family headed by either/both Louis Layssard and/or Lewis Layssard [two males plus others in the household]. Charlotte Anne Layssard is said supposedly to have had access to a land grant in Louisiana, but was not able to make good due to a courthouse fire burning the records.
Waite - Harrington, Shaftsbury VT, Erie Co NY, Chester PA

My father's mother's father is William Bruce Waite. His Union Army discharge which I have has him born 1839 in Monroe County, NY. He enlisted 15 Sept 1861 in the 7th Illinois Cavalry Volunteers, contracted typhoid at Antietam, and was discharged from McClellan army hospital, Philadelphia, October, 1864. He married Frances Welser and settled in Chester, PA, workng as a carpenter.

The 1860 Census has a William Waite in Boston, Erie County, NY, son of Orilla Harrington born 1806, with siblings John Henry Waite born 1827, Philander Waite born 1831, Alvah Waite born 1833, Lucy Waite born 1836, Marcy Waite born 1838, and Roscoe Waite born 1842.

I think his father was Major Waite born November 11, 1804 and probably died before the 1860 Census. His parents were Jonathan Waite 1771-1847 and Lucy Matteson 1774-1845.

I'd like to correspond with anyone who has any of these in your line.
Hello, I was very interested to see the posting above about Nathan Waite and Phebe Tufts of Malden. Thank-you very much for posting the info on the Malden history!

I'm descended from their son who was also named Nathan Waite and married Sarah Lord Fulton (Daughter of Rev War Patriots Sarah Bradlee and John Fulton)

Nathan Waite II has a very interesting story written about him in the History of the Town of Medford. He was a blacksmith and led the entire town of Medford in the first known instance where an entire town worked together to free a captive slave. The slave's name was Ceasar Anderson.

I would be happy to trascribe the text here if anyone would like to read it!

-Claire

I have seen your requests for a number of years, if you are Tony Waite. In one of them you asked about a Ralph Waite who seemed to disappear altogether and that you thought he may have ended up in Newbury, Berks. I know about this family from Bishop's Cannings, but there was another Ralph Waite born Mildenhall, last seen at the baptism of his son William at Marlborough abt 1750.He is my Ralph and has also disappeared. I'm sure the two family groups are linked as Ralph seems to be a Waite given name. There are not a whole lot of Ralphs around. Newbury is fairly close to Mildenhall and I thought you may have found out if Ralph ever went there.........Marlenny Waite Cunningham.

Thank you so much for responding. My mother's name is Sadie Waite Nelson. Her mother was Icy Brown. She and my grandfather (William Waite)were not married and my mom was raised by her grandmother, Amy Ricketts in Tiky Tiky, Coleyville. My mom was born in 1941. When William died in an accident (1948?)my mom met her sister, who was a very small child at the time. She never saw her again and always wondered what happened to her. Could this be Coleen?
Thanks for your help!

It sounds like we may share the same grandfather :). I don't know too much about him to really confirm that. My mother Sadie Waite) was raised by her maternal grandparents in Coleyville and didn't get to know her father. Just that he lived in Dump, Coleyville, Manchester and died in the 50's. From what I understand, William Waite died in some sort of accident. Does that sound familiar? My mother also immigrated to England and then to the U.S. Do you have any other details on William Waite?
