Phillis Walby 1751~1821

The following entry is found in the town records, and refers to the last survivor of negro slavery within the limits of the town. The institution was abolished by the adoption of the State Constitution in the year 1780, the courts holding that the Bill of rights swept away the remants of involuntary servitude:
"Phillis Walby, servant to Josiah Sawtell, Jun., deceased, died at Groton, aged 70, February 1821."

I am not related to this family, I was on this site and thought it was quite interesting and wanted to share this with the list.
The link to where this information comes from is listed below and is titled "Indian Slaves in 1676".
Joyce

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~massasoit/groton.ht...

William WALBY: b.1825 Ireland, d.1901 Kentucky

Hello;

The William WALBY (1825-1901) who married into my family emigrated from Ireland in 1852. His US naturalization date is unknown.

He wed in USA to a Miss HAMMOND or HAMMONDS, a daughter of Lemuel Hammonds of Anderson County, Kentucky. There were two sons born to this first union: William T. WALBY (ca1854-1904, married Rosa "Rose" YELLMAN) and Samuel H. WALBY (1856-1936, married Mrs. Mary PREY in Idaho). The boys' mother apparently died before 1860, presumably in or near Anderson Co.

William Sr remarried to Mildred (1834-1930), who bore his four daughters: Lucy E. (1861-1947, never married), Mary Alice WALBY (1864-1959, never married), Mildred Hughes WALBY (1871-1952, m.Charles K. MORRELL), and Susan Grace WALBY (ca1873-1959, never married). Except for Samuel, all these WALBYs died in Fayette County, Kentucky and were buried in Lexington Cemetery in the city of Lexington, KY.

I specifically seek the first Mrs. William WALBY, but would be very happy to exchange information and documentation regarding any other individuals named here.

Thanks to all for your time and attention;
Laura
