Hi Annie, sorry I don't get to these boards that often.
Especially now that ancestry.com has changed things.
I have the message board saved i think...lol

I sent your query to my cousin Diane whose mom may have the information.
She doesn't know of any tapestry with the family tree on it. A person I met online who said they are also waldecks told me that they have a photo of the tapestry.
Since she and her sister has visited where our family-grandfather came from, I'm hoping she will know.
Her name if she contacts you is Diane Casteel.
Blessings.

Rhyanna

I am searching for the parents of John Alexander Waldeck, b-12-18-1836, d-7-16-1894 in Sullivan Co MO. He was married to Mariah Bullock Emerson. I show they lived in Hart Co KY, Douglas Co IL, Coles Co IL, Adams Co NE and Sullivan Co MO. They had 9 children. Their youngest child, Thomas Jefferson Waldeck, b-5-5-1883-10-1-1958 in Sullivan Co MO, was married to Lena Baldridge, they had 2 sons, Paul Alonzo and John Edward they then divorced. Paul and John were raised by an aunt and uncle in OK.
Any help will be appreciated and I will be happy to share the info that I have.
Thomas Jefferson Waldeck was my husband's grandfather.
Thanks, Jane Waldeck
you know, i am having problems with the same - as if there are many secrets - i know that my mothers fathers and so on were all "masons (free?)" and you know the secrets surrounding that. there is like a gap in information which i can obtain, almost like a wall - i have seen the tombstone pictures of my moms great and great great grandfathers (spose on castle grounds) and it is a beautiful marble (huge - at least one story high) and has brass accents and says "waldeck familian - then has their names as John u Carl - now my thought is with this picture (mom has) is that in 1921 and before, especially in germany, not any ol person is buried in such a almost royal way? i dunno, id sure like to find out. There is a letter written in old german that my mom has that speaks of carl when he visits germany 1921 from his neiece paula (pauline) about them having fun at the opera/ballet? and then comes the letter of carl fell ill (spose to be back to germany bc his father john died and carl had to clear up the estate/castle?) and then he dies mysteriously in 1921 and was buried as described above. D

do you have anymore info? I find that any little thing can spark so much more info - please share???

very sincerely
bucksiebaby (annie)

Hi Annie, funny you should mention castle and von waldeck.

When my parents, siblings and I moved to fla in 1972, I
met my grandparents. From other relatives I learned
that my grandfather or perhaps his father had the title
"Prince Baron Von Waldeck". When ww11 hit,
he told Hitler to stuff it, he wasn't funding hitler's war.

I have never seen any item that proved that claim.
although i have heard there is a tapestry hanging
in the castle that details the full family history.
I have an aunt that won't share what she knows,
and perhaps another who isn't talking to me,
who may know. I do have cousins that are interested
and I met online a distant cousin who had been to the
Castle in Germany.

My father once said, that if all the waldecks ever got
together we'd fill up the whole state of Fla and then some.
Seems like he is right. lol

Rhyanna who would love to go to Germany see castle
and meet waldecks still living there.

annie - all you have to do is call me (757-262-9405) I have been doing research for some time now, and have lot's of information - none, however, lead to a castle in germany -- that being said - i am planning a trip to iowa to do some research - call me if you are interested - maybe we could combine notes and acutually find our ancestors... here is what I have - grandpa Carrol = his father is August Arthur Waldeck b 7 mar 1894 in boone Iowa - his parents are Charles H Waldeck b 27 apr 1862 in germany, and Theressa Whittenburg b abt 1870 in germany - they were married in nebraska abd 1890....Great great grandpa carl (charles) applied for passport and left us sept 1921 for germany to settle property issues - he died there (I'm sure you have seen the picture)- soo many questions - some can be answered from local research.... i am planning a trip to germany in 2010 - call me or e-mail me ....i would love to share info with you - love - your sister....
to "TOM" Waldeck - i have been researching our family of waldecks and your name pops up everywhere, and i see that you have talked w/my sister christine on many occasions - (i had to post bc you cracked me up when i read how your invitation must've been lost in mail for Charles/Dianna wedding - lol - I have said the same thing!) anyway, i have been researching long time w/nothing to track - i grew up knowing that my great & great great grandaddys owed castle in Black Forest Germany (East Germany) - and have done many reports in school - bringing a bayonette that was his - we have a paper signed by Wilhelm III (? or II) for Carl (charles - Karl) but not sure what for, also bank record of him which left his wife (lots money) also i have veiwed photos of Karl (carl) w/his father Jon (John)their burial tomb (actually its a huge marble monument) which i was told was located on the castle grounds - we have letters from carl or jon, but are in "old german" language - we just have to many artifacts and info that would lend my to seek the "non" royal line of waldecks - please help, i am at a road block and have been for years. Oh, my mother and gramma have always referred to their last name as "von Waldeck" - help me distinguish our waldeck line - YOUR distant cousin??? (LOL)
annie (bucksie baby - my nickname)

I have seen pic of both of them, their tombstone (huge) w/both names, and have been told its on the castle grounds. i just thought it was interesting that you mention Johnny (jon?)

Our german ancestor originated from Immenhausen, however he travelled to South Africa as a Hessian Soldier in about 1802-1806. He was born Johannes Waldeck in 1764. Perhaps your Henry Waldeck & he were cousins, given the similar birth period/place & subsequent occupations. Any suggestions or clues would be most welcome

WALDECK - missing pieces
I have been researching the Waldecks for some time and keeping getting stuck about the time my GGgrandfather Edward Waldeck supposidly came over from the Duchy of Waldeck. This could have taken place from 1861 - 1870. I believe he was born about 20 years prior.
I believe he was a direct relation to Emma Waldeck but can go no further. I do know that he was the father of Conrad Waldeck whose brother Edward W. is my Ggrandfather.
Any help here in filling in the pieces?

It has been some time since you posted your message but I have just noticed it. I recently was in the village Waldeck (August, 2000) and spent some time at the castle. Although it is a hotel now, there is some very interesting geneological information there - however a majority of the presentation within the castle museum deals with its years as a prison. Please contact me at vanessdb@jefnet.com if you would like more information about the village and castle. Mike Blechschmidt runs the hotel and museum and although speaks very little english is a helpful man when it comes to tracing one's heritage.

I think that I have some information on Conrad. There is a Conrad Waldeck that is the brother of my Grandfather, Edward W. Waldeck. I know that they settled in in New York City after arriving but my dates are a bit loose from 1861 - 1870. Do you have any information about his/their parents?

Deanna:

Your posting on this board reminds me of how fast history gets lost. I was researching the civil war history of my ggrandfather Charles Waldeck and came accross your post. Your gggrandfather Grove was my father Carroll Waldeck's brother or my uncle. Our family used to visit he and his wife (Ester?) when they lived in Allegany. Charles and Nellie had a farm outside of Allegany on which my father grew up. The Charles Waldeck who I am investigating was Charles' father also named Charles who came from Germany around 1855 with his wife Mary. In 1864 he joined the 187th NY infantry volunteers and served with them until his discharge in July 1865. He died in 1875 and is buried in the protestant cementary in Allegany. Dick Waldeck ( Bob Waldeck's son) and also Grove's nephew lives in Portvillel. He is the only contact I still have in western New York. My ggrandfather was born in Bochum Germany. I still do not have much information on his wife Mary. After Charles died she married a Peter Schmidt and they operated a successful tavern in Olean for years. Dick Waldeck believes her maiden name was Stroehmann. When you see the name Waldeck you will see that a lot of people are trying to trace roots back to a royal family by that name in Germany. Don't bother. We are not related. If we were related the good news is that we would be related to most of the royalty of Europe ( ie The English Royal family Russian royal family), however the bad news is that a prince from that family was a high ranking Nazi SS General in World War II who was tried at Nurenburg. I speak pretty good German and hope someday to trace our family roots back into Deutshland. If you ever come accross any old Waldeck papers send me an e-mail. If you have specific questions concerning the Waldeck name send me an e-mail. I live in Warren County PA.

Waldeck--Falkenhainer connection

I may be able to answer some of your questions in regard to Gedraud Falkenhainer, the wife of Georg Dietrich Waldeck. I have portraits of her parents and photos of several of her siblings. According to my information she died in Alsfeld, Germany in 1910--she was over ninety. Her brother Jacob prepared a family record for his niece Augusta before he died. It was written in German, but most of it has been translated. I also have a translation, but unfortunately not the original, of a letter her father wrote to his children in the U.S. in 1856 in which he mentions that the daughter of Hartman Waldeck of the horsemarket will be bringing gifts to them when she arrives in the U.S. I also have the obituary for Jacob C.C.Waldeck. In fact, you may be interested in a number of the materials that I have assembled. If you are interested in sharing information and photographs, please contact me at the above address. We should talk.
Charlotte,

The Augusta Falkenhainer who collected most of the information I referred to earlier was the daughter of George Falkenhainer and Catharina Vogel. He was the brother of Gedraud Falkenhainer Waldeck.
My E-mail address is Margi@net-wright.com. When you have time to discuss the family in more detail, please contact me. I copied a number of photos tonight for C.R. in New York. We had a lengthy phone conversation a few days ago and I can,t begin to express how exciting it was to finally talk to someone who knew who these people were and who had heard so many of the same stories. With at least three of us working on this line, we should be able to fill in some of the blanks.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Margi

As you research the Arnett family, have you come across Louisa Arnett or Jessie Daniel Arnett? Louisa was Jessie's mother (do not know her maiden name or husbands first name), was born abt 1833, and died July, 1913, in Frog Jump Tennessee. She was the mother of Virginia Arnett Sandlin and grandmother of Exie Sandlin Carter. Jessie /Jesse/Jessee was born abt 1864, married Julia/Jullee/Jullie (possibly a Carter and daughter of Albert and Niecy Carter), and was my maternal g-grandfather. Any leads much appreciated.
I am not sure if this helps but in regards to the male born in 1872, I know that according to the 1930 census, my great grandfather, Edward Waldeck, was placed to be born in 1871 (could be 1872 as they ask for age and not exact birthdates). Edward owned a gas station in Lyons, Wayne County, New York. I dont have much more info. I believe that he married a Mary Nelson and my Grandmothers birth name is Margarette Waldeck, she also had an older brother, Elmer. She was born in 1927 or so.

Emmerich v. Waldeck is the earliest mention of the name as a knight from the Rhein at the third tournament on the Bodesee in the year 948.One source says 1042 as when the Boos von Waldeck castle was built, another credits William v Heinzberg in 1150. Your v. Waldecks descend from the von Schwallenberg family, who occupied your Burg Waldeck around this time. Perhaps the original family became extinct in the male line or one line was ousted by the other. Either way in the 1700's Boos von Waldeck became zu Waldeck meaning they have rightful claim to the original title.
