Hi Ms. Dixon,

Thank you for replying. My great grandfather, Ed Cowan, was a brother of Jesse Cowan who was Leona Cowan Buchanan's father. Ed and Jesse Cowan were born in Alabama and came to Texas in the 1885-1895 period. Ed eventually settled in Basin Springs and then Sadler east of Whitesboro. Ed Cowan died in 1942. We think Jesse died between 1900 and 1910 based on the census.

I have been trying to find his descendants and hoping to locate old family photos and family stories. I would be happy to swap info with you.

If you want, we can communicate off the boards through gmcowan (at) megapathdsl.net

Gary Cowan
Fort Worth, Texas
I have done some research on this family. I believe Edmund is the son of William Henry Waldrop and Phylis Blaylock. William Henry was the brother of Clinton Meeks Waldrop.
A descendant of Clinton Meek Waldrop has a perfect DNA match to my line of Waldrops. Prior to the DNA match we had never even suspected a kinship between our family and yours...

Indeed, William (Moses) Waldroup's father may be Solomon Waldroup, son of Edward Waldroup. According to my sources, this is correct. Edward Waldroup is my g-g-g-g-grandfather. Moses Waldroup, the elder (b. 1802- ), son of Edward, is my g-g-g-grandfather, and his daughter Caroline, married my grandfather John PORCHE.

Re: Looking for parents of William Wilburn Waldrop

Hi,

Shadrack Waldrop Sr. had three sons mentioned in his probate papers to whom he left jointly a certain property in SC. They were Shadrack Jr, Ira Willis and Eli Waldrop. Shadrack Jr. seems to have been at least 10 or more years older than the other two. In the early 1830s that property was sold and Ira may have bought part of it. Apparently Shadrack and Eli moved to Georgia (to the area that is today Gwinnette and Forsyth Counties) about the time that property was sold. Irs remained in Spartanburg for another ten years or so before he also moved to GA to live in the vicinity of his brothere, but probably closer to Eli. The names Eli and Ira appear in the descendents of both Eli and Ira, but no one mentions any of their descendents being named Shadrack. I have not seen any of the three names given to descendents of Shadrack Jr. However, I have only seen names of their descendents through their grandchildren. So it is possible someone in later generations was given the name Ira Shadrack Waldrop.

If you know where your grandmother was born and if she was born before 1930 you can try to look her up in the US census for 1930, 1920, 1910 and/or 1900 in hopes of finding her with her parents. It helps to know her birth year and the names and ages of her siblings to make sure you have found the right family. To access census data free, check if your local library provides access to Ancestry's library version database. If not, you might try taking a 30 day free trial membership to Ancestry.com (www.Ancestry.com) or maybe subscribing for longer for a fee. Or you might try to get a copy of your grandmother's death certificate. Death certificates for many states lists the parents of the deceased including mother's maiden name and where the parents were born as well as listing the name of the spouse and the name of the person giving the information. However death certificates usually cost money so I tend to avoid them in favor of Census data from a free site like the local library. If census data fails to provide the info I want then I would get a death certificate. They can be obtained in the county records where she died.

It also helps to contact distant relatives like cousins of your parents who might have the information recorded (or know someone who does) and might even have pictures of ancestors or letters or bedspreads woven by your great or great-great grandmother. It is by contacting those distant cousins that I have found wonderful pictures of my gg-grandparents, g-grandparents and their siblings. I even found pictures of one ggg-grandmother and of a ggg-grandfather taken in the 1850s. You will be amazed what treasures are out there waiting for you to find them.

Happy hunting,
Lynn

Hi,

Robert Waldrop's wife Joanna was 40 years older than he was and must have been a widow of a Mann since Abraham M. Mann most likely was her son. She and Robert lived close to Abraham Mann and his family while they all lived in GA definitely suggestive of a family bond between Joanna and Abraham. Abraham Mann's wife and some of his daughters died between 1870 and 1880 and in 1880 he turned up in AR with a new wife and sons and one daughter from his first marriage. During that same decade Robert and Joanna moved to Lamar Co. AL. There is a picture posted at the Fayette Co. AL rootsweb site supposedly of Robert's brother W. W. Waldrop and wife Jane but I suspect the old couple seated in the front were Robert and Joanna with his older brother W. W. standing in the back. None of the younger people are children of W. W. Since the younger folkes are not Waldrops, I wonder if they were kin of Joanna, maybe Rainwaters, Hindmans or Edwards? She was born in SC like the Waldrops and may have been kin to the people from Spartanburg who came to Fayette Co. AL in 1845.

The letter W. W. wrote in 1862 was to his sister-in-law Nancy Mann Waldrop, wife of his brother Samuel Waldrop who lived in Cherokee Co. and Pickens Co. GA. They married in Cherokee Co. GA in Aug 1852. In 1850, brother Samuel Waldrop lived in the home of their father Samuel Waldrop (Sr?). I suspect the father Samuel Waldrop was a son of William Waldrop of Spartanburg, supposedly the oldest son of Shardack Waldrop Sr. Samuel lived in Spartanburg close to William Waldrop and in GA in same county where Shadrack Sr.'s son Eli Waldrop lived.

The William Rampley that Samuel mentioned in his letters (sent during the Civil War to his wife Nancy) was married to a Pricilla Waldrop and both Rampley and his wife were from Spartanburg, SC. Pricilla was about the same age as the daughter of Samuel Waldrop (Sr?) enumerated in his household in Spartanburg in the 1830 and 1840 census. Most likely the children of Samuel Waldrop (Sr?) enumerated in the 1840 Census were William W., Pricilla, Francis (who lived next door to W. W. in the 1860 census), Robert and Samuel (Jr?).

If you look at the Fayette Co. AL rootsweb site you will find the children of William Wilburn Waldrop listed, including his youngest daughter Albertha Elizabeth.

Thanks for the info on what happened to Robert's second wife and daughter.

She didnt write down her parents name and can't for the life of me remember.

When I read your post Shadrack caught my eye. For some reason, Ira Shadrock comes to mind. I'm wondering if these 2 name are some what related.
Please forgive my ignorance for I am new to this :)

I literally flipped back through the census records...so please, please don't take this a fact.
I believe I found your grandmother in Wayne Co., IL in 1930 in the house of Ira S. Waldrop, 21 and Nellie J, 19. They had a daughter, Phyllis M, 1 0/12 on 23 Apr 1930.
In 1920, Wayne Co., IL, there was an Ira F. Waldrop, 47, married to Kate M., 33 with a son Ira S, 11; son Henry S, 10; daughter, Dorth W., 8 and daughter Mary L, 6.
In 1910, Wayne Co., IL, Ira Waldrop was 35, wife Katie M was 23, son Ira Shadrick was 1 11/12 and son Henry Shadle was 7/12.
In 1900 it get's fuzzy...there was an Ira Waldrop, 24, married to an Ida, 15 and living in the house with Richard M. Thomason. Ida was identified as Richard's daughter, Ira as his son in law...Same Ira? Maybe.
Now we have to make the jump from 1880-1900...never easy
There is a William M. Waldrip in Cross Anchor, Spartanburg Co., SC who is 38, with wife, Louisa, 29; daughter, Alma D, 12; son, James D, 10; son, I. Floyd, 5; daughter Epsie, 2; daughter, Liddie, 2/12. Could this be your Ira Floyd? The Ira Floyd in 1900 Illinois said he and both his parents were born IL. But, there is no Ira or Floyd Waldrop in Illinois in 1880. Maybe.
Back to 1870, we find out William's middle name, he is enumerated as Martindale Waldrop, 28 with Louisa, 18, Alma, 2 and James, 2/12.
Now, it gets good.
1860 Spartanburg Co., SC. James Waldrop, 68 is married to Catherine A, 47 with W. M., male, 17 and Susan V, female, 15. Next door is Thomas Waldrop, 30 and Nancy, 28 with Dori E, female 4; Niles W, male 1 and W. RAMPLEY, 67 in his house.
1850 Again, Spartanburg Co., SC. James Waldrop, 55 with Catherine, 38 have Martha, 11; James, 10; William, 8 and Susan, 7 in the house. William Waldrop, the man we call "Old Billy" who married Sarah Dollar is on the previous page. W. Ramply, 54 is between James and William Waldrop...
Bessie Poole Lamb wrote a short sketch of the Waldrop family for the 1928 Waldrop family reunion at Enoree, SC. She said Thomas, son of Asa Waldrop married Miss Rampby...did she mean Rampley? Did she mean Nancy Rampley, daughter of William Rampley?
William Wilburn Waldrop mentioned William Rampley in his letter to his sister, Nancy Mann.
Let me fix this before you go too far...that I. Floyd in William Martindale Waldrop's house in Spartanburg in 1880 was still there in 1900. I told you I had flipped through...So, he is not the Waldrop in Illinois...sorry.

I remember when you were doing a book for your grandchildren on your Graves line, thinking the Pocahantus connection would interest them.
My Graves connection doesn't go to the Captain, either. My grandmother Waldrop's mother was a Graves. A cousin participated in that DNA project and I think we are from Frederick, at least that's what Ken Graves thinks.
We can't find Granny's grandpa's daddy, so we are not much worried about the Atlantic ocean yet...haha.
I put your email address in my address book.

I was told Benjamin Waldrop had sons George, Green Berry, Ezekiel Rufus, Major and Daniel.

Now, I am not sure who I am related to..haha. We currently have participants from 4 of the above ancestors...all but George. The only ones that match are Major and Daniel descendants.

You may want to think about joining the project. Our Ezekiel Rufus descendant is from George Marshall, Ezekiel Anders, Ezekiel Rufus. If you descend from Harvey Manning your ancestry goes through Newton J. to Ezekiel Rufus, right?

Nice to meet you.

We packed over 30 boxes to ship to "cousins" in her different lines. We brought the 7 boxes of Waldrop material home with us. You wouldn't have believed her house. Genealogy everywhere, but neat as a pin and she knew where everything was...Unbelievable woman.

I did move to Vegas! Have just got to the point where I think I can get back to my genealogy; still don't have all the walls painted here. Would love to know more about whose DNA is part of which DNA study....and how that is going. I haven't written to Jan Dawson lately either. She is the expert on Waldrops in U.S. Would love to know what is new. Do we know who was the first of our Waldrop line to arrive here?

Hi, Carol Ann! I'm so excited to find that these lines are being untangled. I had thought that Ezekiel Rufus married Rebecca Clements, which a couple of years ago would have made me a descendant of Capt. Thomas Graves of Jamestown 1608. But DNA has shown that the Graves she descended from was not the Captain.......boo hoo. It's all so fascinating. Feel free to write to me at norma888@earthlink.net.

Sounds interesting. This is my family too! All those "greats" tell me you must be pretty far descended from Edward Waldroup (which is as far as I've gotten in my ancestry). Edward was my g-g-g-great grandfather. His son William Moses, is my g-g-great grandfather, and Moses' daughter, Caroline, my g-great grandmother, married a little Frenchman named John Porche (just came to the mountains from Nancy, France). Are you keeping up? Anyhow, that's how I ended up with the last name Porche.

As an interesting side-note, did you know all these Waldroups are related to Ty Cobb, the baseball player, through Edward's son, Eli? Eli's granddaughter, Sarah Ann Waldroup, married John Franklin Cobb; and THEIR son, Hershel, was Ty's father. The rest, as they say, is history!

If the Samuel Waldroup you speak of is from Macon County, NC, his father was Edward Waldroup from Wake and Old Buncombe counties in NC.
