I have lots of information on Renfroes, but have not found anything that connects to the Walkingsticks.
But, my husband is a Walkingstick descendent.

Diana,so sorry to be long in replying......Jack Walkingstick was known as Tennie, and he is the one at CAne Hill AR during the Civil War and the same one who is the father of the lineage you posted.Tahnee is a cherokee way of saying James...but I have now got some conflicting info that it means John....that's where 'Tennie' would come in.....you have to remember you are dealing with Cherokee names, that the Cherokee themselves often changed, the interpretations by english speaking census takers of those names, and all the confusion that can follow.....it gets to be quite aggravating at times, but I am sure you know that.now, I had always thought that all Walkingsticks came from the same origin, even eluded to that on my webpage that you mentioned....my latest research suggests that there may have actually been three different family origins for the Walkingstick name. One is the Walkingstick family from the Elijay Georgia area...this is my family.Next is the family of Testeskey, other spelling variations, and his family, which were in Tennessee at the time of removal, and the last is a family named Howneeta, again more spelling variations, and they were in north carolina......they became known as Walkingstick as well.the part of the walkingstick family in Georgia that escaped removal ended up in N.Carolina as well, according to my research, a branch of my family, and then of course there is the Old Settler family of Walkingstick, my family and lastly, Tennie or Jack Walkingstick's family who were emigrants to I.T. during the removal era and who I believe are related closely to the Old Settler family , James Walkingstick's family.confused yet?all these families may yet be proven to be related, but at this time, I can't tie them together....so, to reiterate:(4) families, (1) the old settler family of james walkingstick, (2) the emigrant family of Jack Walkingstick, (3) the Tennessee family of Teskeskey, and (4) the Howneeta family of Carolina.hope that helps you, while it doesn't answer the question, i think it will give you some trails to follow in your own research.Michael

Hello,

I'm not sure exactly what info you might already have but I did run across this and thought it might help. This tidbit came from genealogy.com's message board for the last name McAlexander. Hope this helps and if I should run across anything else, I'll definitely send it your way.
Diana

**Now, here is some information on the children of Samuel T. McAlexander. James Hardin McAlexander II (1843-1912), born in Cass Co., MO, married Rachel Lucinda Walkingstick, a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, in Platte Co., MO in 1866. A daughter, Luvica Vilette (Lettie), born at Tracy, Platte Co., MO, married David Marshall Morris in Cass Co, MO in 1887. A son, John Wesley, born Platte City, Platte Co., MO, married Ruby Clara Wampler at Hampton, Platte Co., MO in 1901.
Hello,

I wonder if your John Walkingstsick could be one of the siblings to my Rhoda Starling, born to Rebecca Walklingstick Starling ( Haner, ) Rebecca had a brother Billy, and several other siblings that I don't have the name for. Rebecca was born in 1816, Rhoda in 1844. I have marriage records for both Rebecca and Rhoda in Clark County Arkansas . Rebecca Starling to Geoerge Haner or Harner on March 24 1853. Both were born in 1816. Rhoda Starling married George Matlock 1858 and Rhoda Medlock married Morton Dedwiley in 1865. I have heard through family conversation, that the dedwiley was originally Von Dedwiley or Deadwiley. Haven't sseen record of that anywhere.
Do you have names of John's siblings or parents?
Thanks,
Kathleen

I'm not sure. My Rhoda, was daughter of Rebecca Walkingstick (1816) . Rhoda married George Matlock in Clark County Arkansas in 1858 and Morton Deadwiley in 1865. She had the following children: Louisa Dedwiley, Joseph , Melissa (my great grandmother) Bettie, william Lem, and Laura Ann deadwiley, who I believe died in childbirth.
Rhoda had several siblings, I believe a twin brother, Billy, and another set of twins. I've beesn away from actively working on this for several months, but believe this is accurate. I would loe to hear from you if you think there is a connection. Thanks so much!
Kathleen

Trail of Tears Assoc. "Marking" for family.

The Trail of Tears Association, or TOTA, is currently researching this family for a proposed "marking' of the graves of those who participated in the Trail of Tears. The TOTA has chapters in each of the states that the Trail of Tears coursed through during the removal of the Cherokee in 1838-39.The Walkingstick family had several who were a part of this infamous exodus. The TOTA is seeking info for the family of John (Jack) Walkingstick, Drinker Walkingstick, Ahnawake, Olkinney, Levi, John Jr., William, Tarcheechee, et al., who were participants in the Trail of Tears for a proposed commemoration and memorial for this family. You can learn more about these types of "markings' by visiting the TOTA on the web or by becoming a member of this worthy organization.Anyone who has pertinent, factual data on the Walkingstick family and their participation in the Trail of Tears should present that info to the TOTA so that an exact accounting of all family members who participated in the 1838-39 removal can be performed.Quite an honor for the family and also a worthy recognition by this association that seeks to remember all of those who walked the Trail Where They Cried.Wado.MW

We were also told the WALKER name was derived from WALKINGSTICK. So who knows really, :o) I'm trying desperately to find something, anything, that might help me.
Hello I too am a great grandson of Wilson Walkingstick. My grandmother was Dora Catherine Ford. I would like to know if Wilson was a son of Catherine Stopp of from a former marriage. I have asked some of my relatives but can't get too far. My mother lucy ford is 90 and she remembers Wilson very well but couldn't remember who his parents were I wish I had asked my dad Wilson before he passed away. Most of dad's sisters and brothers are gone. His name was Wilson Ford he is named after his grandfather. I remember going to my Great Grandma Walkingstick's funeral I don't remember how old I was but I was pretty young. Seems like it was in the fifties. I would appreciate hearing from you if you have any info. Burl Ford

Hello I recently found this message board and was surprised to see my great great grandfather's name as well as my great grandfather and grandmother. I am the son of Wilson Ford who is the son of Dora Walkingstick Ford who is the daughter of Wilson and Nancy C. Thomas. I remember my great grandmother a little she died when I was pretty young and I remember hers was the first funeral I ever attended. Don't remember just when she died but it was way back. My grandmother Dora married Lee Ford who was from Bristol Tennessee. I also saw some of her brother's names mentioned in the posts. She had several brothers those I remember best were Bill or William, Ben, Tom and Jim or James. Tom was married to Cora Cochran i think and he died pretty young of a heart attack. I was raised at Stilwell where my grandmother dora lived. I am familiar with some of the walkingsticks having taught school for a long time here in Adair County. I was having trouble finding my Great Grandfather Wilson's parents but according to a post I found here his name was JOhn. We have a record of the walkingstick family somewhere someone did a genealogy of them several years ago. My grandmother Dora's sisters were Mattie Mary Avalene Ada and I'm not sure if this is all of the sisters or not I have a picture of Nancy C. Walkingstick taken the day of her husband's funeral and all of the kids are in the picture I'll have to look at the picture again to see if I named all of the kids i probably left some out. I would love to hear from anyone with ties to this family. Burl Ford

Like yourself, I'm very interested in knowing more about the Walkingstick web site.

I'm directly related to Betsy Walkingstick that married Isaac Nicholson. She is my 6th great-grandmother, and she was born about 1755 in North or South Carolina.

As part of my research, I'm trying to acquire as much information on our Cherokee family ancestry under Udalvnusti, also known as Walkingstick. This would include all the known related Walkingstick family members, family histories, records and photographs. Once the research is completed, I will share everything with everyone that helped by contributing something.

I need the help of our Walkingstick family relatives to fully accomplish this research. At the very minimum, please let me know how your branch of the family ties into the Walkingstick family. Thank you!

I almost forgot, but I have my own family genealogy web site at:

http://www.familytreeheritagelibrary.com

Sincerely,

Leah Pearson

The court papers I have are a petition for an heirship claim. Dora wanted to be declared an heir to Polly so she could have a share of the estate. I am still not sure what the court decided on Dora in this case.

I know this wasn't included in your question, but just to update the thread incase someone else stumbles upon it looking for information, in her Miller app, Dora claimed to be the daughter of Groundhog Downing and Annie Walkingstick and was approved. The application also said she was the granddaughter of Polly and great granddaughter of Ave Vann.

Also, Lizzie Downing, daughter of Polly, claimed in her Miller app that she had brother named Groundhog Downing who was dead.

I recently found this name in some family court papers I have been going through. In the court papers, Dora Vann makes claim that she is the daughter of Groundhog Downing, son of Polly Tadpole, and Anna Walkenstick. Dora stated that she was full blood Cherokee Indian and was enrolled under the name of Dora Downing opposite roll no. 17491.

All I know about any of these people so far is basically what I have stated here. As of yet, I have not found any papers saying the court accepted her claim. Does anyone have any additional information?

I am searching for documentation or any insight to our ancestor Rebecca Walkingstick, (abt1816), supposedly a Cherokee from the Carolinas. I have found record of her on marriage documentation to second husbsand in Arkansas in 1853, where her daughter, Rhoda is also located. Rebeccda's first husband last name was Starling. Rhoda was born in Georgia in 1844. She also had two husbands. Rest of family ended up in Oklahoma. The legacy goes through my grandfather, Orba Sander, through his mother Melissa SAnders.
