Have been working on the Wallings for quite awhile. My problem currently is Mary Walling b. 1760 d.abt 1795; (both in Monmouth Co., NJ) dau of Capt Thomas Walling and Rebecca Roberts. She married Joseph Walling; her first cousin. They had a daughter, Deborah b. 1795 d. 1849. My big problem now is finding proof that Mary is actually Capt. Thomas' daughter. Anybody have proof of this woman. Contact me at fjn111@ucnsb.net

John Chisholm's wives

I would like to add some corrections to John Chisholm's wife/wives.

First, like many traders he had a white wife and various Indian women, of whom the Cherokee women are best documented, that had children by him.

His white wife was Patty Massengill. Patty also found as Patsy and Patience ran the tavern in Knoxville. She successfully divorced Chisholm and married William Brent later relocating with many of John's children to Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. There is a great deal of proof to this that has been continually ignored. 1) Her will in Felician Parish distributes her considerable estate amongst her children and names among them Ignatius who is living in the Cherokee Nation. 2) Marriage records in Nachez, where she first went and where her daughter Deborah married Henry (William) Massengill and her son John married Anne Egan. In the records her maiden name is given as Massengill. All this fits with what we know about Chisholm. His rapid integration with the early Wautuga Settlers was in part due to his marriage into the influential Massengill and Cobb famlies. John's land bordered their land and much of his prosperity probably came from this relationship. Patty won one of the few divorce cases in the State of Tennessee for that time, in part due to her family connections. Her passport survives for travel to Louisiana and notes she is taking her children. Their children are as follows: James, Elizabeth wife of Capt. John Sommerville, Igantius, Deborah married William (Henry) Massengill, Mary Ann "Polly" wife of Phineas Thomas of Davidson co, TN, John R. Chisholm (d 1820); Titus Ogden; Joseph D. (died 1827); Dennis M.. Ignatius is documented as having wives by several Cherokee women, Martha by Lucretia Parris; Jesse, John and William by the sister of Corn Tassel (possibly Peggy); and Goerge and Nelson by Martha Rogers. Dennis M. Chisholm is believed to have had issue by Tiana Brown. Titus married a white woman Hearriet Penelope Trend in Felician, but is found in Cherokee territory and may have joined the tribe.

The Cherokee women that had issue by John Chisholm are several. We know from Narcissa Chisholm Owens that her father Chief Thomas Chisholm is the son of Martha Holmes, so Martha was probably one of the first women John connected with. She was a high born and influential person in her clan and in the tribe, so that makes sense for a trader. This relationship pre-dates 1790.

The next women documented, is the sister of Col. Dick Brown. Brown had some sort of kinship with Doublehead, which is probably how John Chisholm solidified his relationship with that leader. The documentation for this is the deposition of the interpreter James Carey during the trial of William Blount called the "Blount Conspiracy". This is also probably the woman that led to the Tennessee case for divorce that Patty brought. This relationship was about 1798-1810 period. If there were children from this relationship they have yet to be documented.

John also seems to be the father of George Chisholm (c1794-1842) who married first Lydia and secondly Nannie Bowles. George appears in various Cherokee citizenship claims for Mary Jane Lane and others. Narcissa Owens' sister Jane Chisholm Bruton is one of the people deposed. It is believed that John had George by a woman named Neecooie, daughter of Wailia Beamer by the part Creek Jack Thompson. The Beamer and Holmes families were connected and of the same clan, so this is consistent with what we know of Cherokee traditions with traders where mulitple women of one clan might have issue by the same white man.

Walling's in Delaware

I am looking for info on Wallings in the Delaware/Pennsylvania area.

Specifically, I am looking for anyone who may be related to John Walling and his wife Edna. John would have been born around 1898 while Edna would have been born about 1901. They had two children who were also named John and Edna. I believe that Edna's maiden name may have been Walters. We also think that Edna (the daughter) may have married into the name Hutchins. I am pretty sure that this particular branch of Wallings would have resided in Delaware (around Wilmington) for at least 1 generation prior to John and Edna.

If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
I have Alfred Gaines Walling in my data base and have his father John's line back to Rhode Island. I have not worked the Chisum line, however, and know nothing about any Cherokee connection. You might join the Rootsweb Walling List as there have always been people there who have John's line.
The Chisum list might be more likely to know about the Cherokee.
I don't know what happened to David Walling who set up the web site years ago. I have not heard from him in about 5 years. The basis is his site was my file but it had no sources with it then. My file is probably twice as large now. I would be glad to answer questions but not send out the file.
Diana Williams

M. Walling born in Virginia.
His mother was No record. The informant was C.C. Walling who must have been his son Charles?
There is no D N or Daniel in the 1870 Ark census and no one born in Virginia who would have been his father.
My guess is that this info is incorrect. Since the grandson did not even know his grandmother's maiden name I would question all the data on this record. Does the census that you found say Ark?
Diana Williams

Information about the Walling's in northeastern Ohio from Vermont

Hi,

Since this is about 6 1/2 years since you posted I doubt that you will read this message. However, I am a descendant of the Walling brothers whom you describe in your email. In fact, my grandfather and grandmother are buried in the family cemetery at Walling's Corners. My branch of the family goes back to Ransom Gideon Walling, who was, I think, either my great grandfather, or great great grandfather. My grandfather's name was Ralph William Walling. He graduated from Case Institute around 1900, where he was a star football player. My father was also a Case graduate, but not as good a football player. He had a brother and two sisters, but I am an only child (depression baby) and have only two cousins on the Walling side. I've lost contact with them, too. So far as I know, I am the last descendant of Ransom Gideon Walling living in northeast Ohio.

According to my father, all of his smart cousins (i.e. the children of my grandfather's siblings) moved to Long Beach, California back in the 1920's and 1930's. I suggest you find a Long Beach phone book, maybe some of my third and fourth cousins have a link you'd be interested in. My four children have also all deserted the Rust Belt.

There is an interesting Family Legend, dating back to the Revolutionary War which describes how the surname Walling got into the family gene pool. I also have another interesting story about a 1920's family reunion of many of the by-then inextricably inter-married New England Yankee clans which had emigrated to the Ohio Country in the period between 1790 and 1825. With all due respect to the author of the book you cite, 1825 is, I believe, the proper date for when the Walling brothers first moved to Ohio. If my memory of oral tradition and other books on the Connecticutt Western Reserve serves me correctly, they went back to Vermont to find brides because single women were still in short supply in the wild west. The brothers originally came from Royalton, VT, and hence the name for the community in Ohio now known as North Royalton.

There is a major Interstate 77 interchange in the Cleveland suburb of Brecksville, Ohio for Wallings Road, which is named for our ancestors. The last time I was in the grave yard at Walling's Corners was probably twenty years ago, but if you live near Cleveland you might find something interesting there. Many of the old tombstones are still at least semi-legible.

Good luck on your search. If you're a descendant of James and I'm a descendant of Ransom, then we are cousins of some incredibly distant degree of propinquity. Truthfully, I'm much too feeble to even think about calculating it. :-))

Hi Amy, This Ralph and Joyce are my 10th great grand-parents. I have Joyce's maiden name as NAIL (Enland), but not parents, so it's hard to know for sure where the Enland fits. Joyce was married a second time to Thomas Lombard. (no children that I can tell). Let me know if you need anything else? Sandi

I found different census records in which Daniel N. Walling lists 2 different locations for his birthplace he doesn't name either parent. In the 1900 census Corsicana Texas ..Daniel N. Walling says he was born in Ark. his father was born in Alabama and his mother's birthplace was unknown. In the 1910 Houston Ward 4 Harris Co. Texas census it lists D.N. Walling as being born in Alabama. In the 1920 census Dan says his mother and father were born in Alabama so I guess Daniel was born in Ark. and his father was born in Alabama.
Yes C.C.Walling (his son) states his father was born in ARK. so does his daughter Martha in the 1930 census. As far as him (C.C.)not knowing the maiden name of his grandmother that may have to due with the story of a death, remarriage and adoption. I really need some help on this one I'm SOOO stuck. Thanks for the help!
D.N.Walling
