Fred,

What a strange set of coincidences. My father's name was Fred Wander (although his "real" name was Ephraim), and his older brother was named Joseph. Their father's name, however, was Avram Nechemia. They came from a village (Sassov) near Lvov, now in Ukraine.

Maybe there is some connection.

Nathaniel Wander

Amazing! I wonder if a member of her family was Solomon Wander, my great grandfather, one of his sons being Fred Wander, my grandfather, who I'm named after?

Solomon's other sons were named Joseph, Sam and Manny. I assume some of these names along with Fred came from ancestors in the Wander family line.

Where do you live? I live in Albany, NY.

Fred (Ephraim Elisha) Wander was my father. He was born in Sassow near Lvov (then Austria, later Poland, now Ukraine) on December 30, 1912. He told us that his father, Avram Nechemia, actually had the family name Zeigert (sp?), but that for some legalistic reason, he wound up with the name Wander on his birth certificate. If I remember correctly, the Wander name was somehow associated with his mother's side of the family.

Hello Stewart...
At first glance I was ready to say that I didn't see any connection but after Lois's note there are lots of indications that there might be some relationship. It is interesting that I named my only daughter Sara Wander. Brody is the farthest back I have found my beginnings. My great Grandfather Solomon Wander was born in Brody and moved to Albany NY at a very young age on the mid-1800's.
Craig

Dear Dean, Thanks for replying. Do you have any of the original source documents, such as letters? I'd be interested in copies of any letters Alwin received from my grandfather William Wanderer from Philadelphia, PA, his brother Frank from Lancaster, PA, or his uncle Frederick who was either from New Jersery or Philadelphia. I don't know if this is possible of if such letters exist; I'd gladly reimburse you for copies, postage, etc. Please email me privately at herobird2@comcast.net if you'd like to discuss this further.
Thanks very much!
Re: Alwin Wanderer of Chicago

Hi Lisa,
I am Alwin Wanderer's grandaughter, & I have a copy of the book. However, it was passed down thru male descendants that carry on the name, so the official book is with my second cousin Dean Wanderer in Washington D.C. I believe he is with the Navy there. I will check with my aunt Margaret Best, Alwin's daughter, as the where the official book is & whether it has been "kept up to date" - last I heard she didn't know. But I will email her sons, my cousins, to see if anyone knows the status.

I am up in Anchorage, so email is pretty much my only resourse other than a monthly call to my aunt. I usually don't have time to do genealogy (until I retire from the Natl. Archives) other than helping people here at work, but I got curious on my break time & wandered thru the message board & saw your message. In time, I may try to update my book &/or track down offshoots of the family, like minorities which my grandfather would not ackknowledge. Anyway, keep in touch - reach me directly at judy.petersen@nara.gov. Judy Wanderer Petersen

Only brothers I have identified in Brooklyin so far are Irving and Herman. Their mother was Julia or Leah, who immigrated with them from Hungary.
Am searching for descendents of Alwin Wanderer of Chicago. In the 1950s he authored a family history entitled The Wander-Wanderer Family of Germany & Bohemia. I have a partial copy; this is also available on microfilm from any Family History Center. I would like to know if his descendents have any of his original source documents that he used to complile the history. I have verified some of the information contained in it about my Wanderer line, so I believe that the history is legitimate. Would love to discuss it with others. Thanks, Lisa

Hi Fred, I don't think that we are from the same family! The father from my grand father was called Michael or Michel. My grand father Joseph died in belgium and was born in Tarnow, Cracow in 1901. He came to Belgium from Poland in 1923 and his wife was called Fraida Zelkowicz (this is my second name). She was also from Poland. My grand father was taken to a work camp in northern France: St Omer and escape from the train on 31-10-1942.

My father Max Wander never taught!! The mother of my grand father was called Fenichel.
Shalom!
Brenda
Thank you for such a quick respone. We could well be related. Did the Wander family that you are a part of originally come from Brody in what is now the Ukraine? Also, did Max Wander teach at Columbia College?

My greatgrandfather, Solomon Wander came from Brody (it was part of Galecia) around 1880, with his wife, Louisa Landow Wander. I heard Solomon's father was a Rabbi and I only suspect his name was Joseph.Solomon brought with him a sister, Rosa who married a Klein. There was a cousing, Norton Wander who I believe was a teacher at Hunter College. Also, there is a cousin, Lois Dunn Whitcomb in California, whose grandmother was also a sister to Solomon.

Does any of this sound familiar? My cell number, if you wish, is 518-461-9229. Thanks.

When i put my note out there I gave incorrect info. i thin kI said they emigrated in 1824. Josephine Borg Wander was born in 1824. They came to the us in 1852 and were married in 1854 per the census yet ive never found the record. They came to St. Louis, from BAden, Baden Germany near the black forest. My gr gf was George Wander . My gf was born in St.Louis in 1867 per some records and some say 1868. Also he went by Oscar Joseph yet his baptismal record I got from the church has him as john Oscar .My Grgf"s mother was MAgdalena Weihs per his death record. George owned severasl houses and a large dry goods store. his tombstone is one of teh huge ones, about 25 ft tall. the monument company told me today that would cost between 35 and 40,000.There are Wanders in California that are distant cousins of my grgf. they were from Ny as they where they settled and moved to Ca. My brother works with a lady named Wander in Livermore Ca., Her roots go to NY.

My mothers maiden name was Wander. She didnt give me much info about her family. She died in 68 at age 57. All her sibs are gone an dbasically me and my sister are the only ones interested in family history. I did get some things from moms brothers before they died. Per the US census my great grandfather George Wander came to the US in 1852. He married in 1854 but I have found baptismal records but no marriage record. He married Josephine Marie Borg {Bork}They lived in St. Louis Missouri in the south German area. My great grandfather owned several rental houses and a dry goods store. He apparantly had money but much fighting ensued when he died between several of his children over the money, The belnged to the Catholic German church and were very active and gave a lot of money and donated items from the store. They came from BAden, Baden near the black forest area. My grandfather went to BAden for one of the therapeutic baths befor ehe married my grandmother. Grandpa wa snamed Oscar , but depending which source you check, his name was Oscar Joseph, Joseph Oscar or john Oscar. I have 3 cousins who carry the Wander name, George Clinton, Joseph and Robert. Im not even sure where they are all. Their home is Columbus, Ohio. Robert was in Washington but I think moved back to Ohio, Joseph was in Mississippi teaching at a college and George was in Columbus. I think George runs the family business of belts for machines, autos etc. I klnow I was told some of my great grandfathers brothers moved to NY but that would have been in the late 1800 My brother Joe, works witha Sandy Wander from NY. She gave hin her dads address and Joe wrote but he didnt respond. I dont have a family crest for the Wanders. I have the one for my dads family which he researched in Switzerland. Ill be happy to answer any questions I can and share any info I may have. carol

Matilda was born 11/27/1882 in New York City. Died 2/9/1964 in Norwich. I believe they lived in Queens. I have an old hand-painted wooden box that belonged to my grandmother. It has "GARMISCH PARTENKIRCHEN" on it. I can't get any further back than this. ANY info would be appreciated
