Hello Cousin! My great-grandfather was Charles Frederick Phy, Margaret's brother. The PHY part of the family tree is my brickwall. When I found that Margaret, her daughter Margaret and Fred Wanderer were living with Jesse and Margaret PHY (our common gg-grandparents) I thought I would search Wanderer instead of Phy. Jesse was a Fairmount Park Guard, and before that a Philadelphia Police Sgt. from 1858. His parents were Paul and Mary Phy. I have Paul's naturalization papers, and would LOVE to share with someone related to this family. My grandpa was Charles Phy, Jr., who had a daughter Jennie, who was my mom. I would love to share my information with you. Ingrid

Hi Carol. This is the information I am looking for, and I hope you can help. Jesse and Martha had a son named Paul in 1856, and my great grandfather, Charles in 1858. After that, I know about Margaret in 1876 and a Lizzie (Probably Elizabeth) in 1880. I know they had 11 children, of whom 9 survived. I would like to know the names of the other children, and I would love to have a photo of Jesse and Martha. Since they lived with Margaret and her family, I am hoping that her family might have the only photos of them. There MAY be a photo of Jesse on line, but I'm not sure having never seen him. There is a site for the Fairmount Park, showing a very old photo of the guards. One of them looks almost identical to my cousin David, only older. Also, if you know, I would like to know Martha's maiden name. I have written to Falls Methodist Church as that is where my great grandfather Charles Phy and Martha Gotwols were married. I am hoping that they have information on Christenings of the other children. Charles and Martha had 4 children. Charles, Jr. (the oldest), Paul, Harry, and Jennie, who my mom was named after. My great, great, great grandparents, Paul and Mary Phy, had 9 children. Jesse, Margaret's father, was the youngest. I truly hope to hear from you. Ingrid

Hi. I just got transcribed pages from the Gotwols Family Bible, and your mother is mentioned. Charles Phy, Sr. was married to Martha Gotwols. They list Martha and Charles as having Charles, Jr. (my grandpa), Paul,(bachelor), Harry, (No children), and Jennie. Then it says-"child-Ethel Scott, Margaret Wanderer's side comes in here. B-1914, D. aug. 24, 1978, M. Jerry Embury. Daughter Carol Smith has 2 sons." Jennie died in 1911, and evidently, her husband died soon after. My great grandpa died in 1913. Do you know anything about Ethel? I wondered if someone in your family raised her. She would be my aunt.

Hi Barbara,
I'm just starting to surf the message boards, & don't do genealogy yet. I saw you message about Karl Wanderer in N.J. In my grandfather's Wanderer book (Alwin E.J. Wanderer), there's a Karl in the back of the book under misc branches. He's on Plate 1, Wanderers from Austria to Teanek, N.J. Does that help? I didn't look in the rest of the lengthy family tree book, but I'm sure there are other Karls in the other branches. You might try to get a copy of the book, The Wanderer - Wander Family of Bohemia, Germany, & America 1450-1951. Unfortunately no index - who knows, maybe in another life, I'll try to index his book. Hope this helps. Ques. - contact me at judy.petersen@nara.gov directly. Judy Wanderer Petersen

Hi Raymond,
I realize your orig. message is 3 yrs. old, but I just recently started surfing the message boards. Did you ever get an answer about your father's brother who moved to CA that you would like to locate? My grandfather (Alwin E J Wanderer) is the one who wrote the family history book on Wanderers. I really don't do genealogy (yet), but I looked for Elmer & Delores Wanderer in my book. They are on Plate 2 of the Funkstat line, but I didn't see their names in the narrative part of the book. They had 2 sisters, Winifred & Florence, & a brother William, so I figure he must be the one you're looking for. Have you tried some of the free geneal. websites to find him? Or, if he is still living, Yahoo.com people search, Bigfoot.com, whitepages.com, switchboard.com, or metacrawler.com - all of those have people finders, but a word of caution, the lists are outdated. About 1 or 2 in 10 is valid, but it may be worth a try. If you have any ques. or comments, you can contact me at judy.petersen@nara.gov

Clara, b 3-29-1865, went to the USA.

She is one of eight children born to Friedrich Karl Wanderer (1821-1889)
and Lotte Frederike Sellner (1824-1883).

Friedrich Karl's parents were Johann Georg Wanderer (1772-1845)
and Margarete Henrika Brose (1797-1865).

Johann Georg's parents were Johann Leonhard Wanderer (?-?)
and [unknown] Corder (?-?).

Johann Leonhard's parents were Johann Georg Wanderer (1710-?)
and Eva Barbara Gackstatter (?-?).

Johann Georg's parents were Hans Georg Wanderer (1660-1740)
and Ursula Neber (?-?; his second marriage).

Hans Georg Wanderer (1660-1740) was baptised in Reubach.

Hans Georg's parents were Hans Wanderer (1628-1679)
and Anna [unknown] (1629-1694).

That's the beginning of the line in the book.

Please forgive any typos!

- Rachel

Searching for Ada Jennings Wanderer...married a Wanderer and was living in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1928. Ada's mother was Mary Susan Ellis Jennings, who died at her home in 1928. Ada is my great aunt. I have some information on her.....brothers were Samuel, Elliot, John, Marvin, Fountain "Fontie", Ben and Jerome "Romie". They lived in St. Louis Missouri, and Chicago, Il. as adults but were raised in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Ada supposedly studied/taught music in Chicago around 1900. May have been married first to someone named Shirra.....?????????? ANY one out there ...

Lisa----

I came across your post on Wanderer Ancestry and am hoping you can help me. I am researching my grandfather Bernard Hartley.

You write that your grandmother was Helen Wanderer, maiden name of Hartley.....her parents being William H Hartley and Emily Hartley......

I have found William and Emily both residing at 2328 N Front st in the 1890 Philadelphia City Directory......

I found no entry for William in the 1910 Pennsylvsania Census Miracode Index......however I find Emily as head-of-household with her son Bernard (possibly my grandfather) and a daughter Helen T, and three other non-relatives...possibly Emily is either divorced or a widow?

I’m thinking that Helen may be your grandmother.

William is listed as a designer.....of what I don’t know altho I’m thinking fabrics as my grandfather also listed himself as a designer/weaver on the only document I have..

Is there any info at all concerning these people that you can give me, specifically birth dates, occupation, death dates etc.

I do have a portrait photo of Bernard Hartley probably taken around 1900 when he married my grandmother. I would be happy to forward a Jpeg to you if it adds to your research.

It's possible that your grandmother and my grandfather were brother and sister

Thank you for checking this out.

Steve Brockway
jazz@teleport.com

Am searching for ancestors and/or relatives
on my mother's family; her maiden name was
Dolores WANDERER. Her brother Bill
Wanderer was from California and died
a few years ago but supposedly traced our
family history. I am trying to find his
daughter Bonnie but I don't know her
married name. Any information is much
appreciated. Here is some background on
my mother: Her parents were William
Raymond Wanderer and Helen Wanderer. Helen's
maiden name was HARTLEY. They lived in
Philadelphia. Helen's parents were William
H. and Emily Hartley. Emily's maiden name was
TERRY. William and Emily immigrated from
England in the early 1880s. William's parents
were William Sr. and Jennie Wanderer. Don't know
Jennie's maiden name.

Hello, Judy. Nice to hear from you. How is Herman Wanderer related to your grandfather? Do you know where Herman and Ada got married? As I understand, Herman and Ada had only one son, William. I believe he died in 2002. William did not have children, so Ada and Hermans "line" ends there! Ada and Herman are buried in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Jump on into the genealogy "obsession"; once hooked your'e in for life! Best regards, Caroline

Thank you, Rachel, for your kind reply. I have since learned that Ada and Herman are buried in the Woodlawn cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ada died in 1940. Herman in 1934. Their son, William was married to Olivia Selke after the marriage to Lucille Jennings.William had no children, and died March 2002. He is buried in Glen Eden cem., Redford, Mi. I send this in the hopes that it might "fill" in some more information for your Wanderer genealogy. Ironically, Ada was Ada Jennings prior to her marriage to Herman...but her son did not marry into the same Jennings line when he married wife #1, Lucille Jennings. [Ada was from Eureka Springs, Arkansas.] Thanks again for your effort on my behalf. Caroline

Hi Caroline,
I'm going to jump in on this one too because I don't know where you are located. I'm Alwin Wanderer's granddaughter, & I know that the Newberry Lib. in Chicago has a copy of his book, & my cousins (Bests, not Wanderers) say that possibly Chicago Public Lib. & the Lib. of Congress might have copies. Approx 500 were printed, & many of the relatives who answered grandpa's ques. also have copies. I have one, but I'm up in Anchorage, & I do not do genealogy (yet - hopefully more time in retirement). I'm just surfing the message boards during my break at work, since I don't have a computer at home. Anyway, good luck with your research. If you ever have a ques. about my grandfather's family, feel free to contact me directly at judy.petersen@nara.gov.
Judy Wanderer Petersen
