Hi, I am related to the family of Catherine Jane Wann and Levi Long and I think I can help you. Mary S. Wann was born in 1835 in Harford County, MD. She was the daughter of Thomas and Hestor Wann who migrated from Harford Co Maryland to Illinois in the early 1830's. She was the sister of Catherine Jane Wann (b. Jan 19, 1833) who married Levi Long on August 8, 1850. I have a great deal of information on that family but did not know whom Mary S. Wann had married. Thomas Wann was the son of John Wann (and Susannah). John Wann was a Revolutionary War patriot in the PA army but moved to Harford County MD after the war. He served the entire time of the war. I am in the DAR because he is my 5th great grandfather. If you would like to exchange information with me, you can also email me at ecalbert@comcast.net Claire Albert, Columbia MD

I would be terribly interested to get in touch with anyone who has information on the Wann family of Bureau and Putnam Counties. My great-great-great-grandmother was Mary S. (Wann) Dunn and I've never been able to connect her properly to the Wann family of Bureau County. She married my great-great-great-grandfather, Waitman Dunn in Putnam Co. on 22 November 1854. Waitman Dunn's step-father was Levi Long (b. 1779) whom I think must have some connection to Catherine Wann Long's husband Levi Long.

Re: WANN/TRUESDALE/MCKENZIE of Ontario Canada

I can't find anything more on John/Jane Wann of Ontario.

All I have is a timeline: William Henry Wann, born c 1852,in Toronto, s/o John and Jane Wann; marriage year of 1873 states his residence was Waterford in Norfolk; William and Mary Ann (Truesdale) Wann resided in Haldimand Co., Walpole in 1881; Norfolk Co., in 1891; Elgin Co., Aldoborough Twp. in 1901 and 1911. Mary Ann died at Port Dover Ontario.

Subsequent census records state William Henry Wann born Ireland. I am currently searching for further info on John and Jane Wann, but have been unsuccessful. They may have emigrated the same year the census was done. I haven't looked at the full 1871 census and only heads of families are listed in the Ancestry index.

William Henry Wann, h/o Mary Ann Truesdale is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, West Lorne, Elgin County, Aldorborough Twp. Ontario. So too is Mary Ann (Wann) Truesdale and Margaret Mae (McMillan)Truesdale, w/o William Henry Truesdale Jr.

The only info I have on John Truesdale is a blurp in a newspaper - "John Truesdale, native of Ireland, died 11/12/1878, Waterford, Ontario in Norfolk Co." I have not found any death record. I found a John Truesdale (age 45) married to a Margaret (age 41) in the 1852 census of Waterford, Norfolk Co., with the following children:

Margaret, aged 22
Elizabeth, aged 18
Robert, aged 12
John, aged 8
Watson, aged 7
Mary, aged 3
Ellen, aged 14

All were born in Ireland. John Truesdale remarried in 1861 to Amelia McKenzie. I can't find a death record for John Truesdale either.

I will keep trying and if I come up with anything I will be sure to let you know.

Rhonda

I am interested in the Wann family from Northern Ireland and I am looking for a connection between my Wanns and your William Wann b c 1852 and his parents John & Jane Wann. I can't immediately see where William Wann and his father might fit into our family tree. Sorry I can't help you with the Trusesdale family either. Do you know whereabouts in Ireland John Truesdale was born? I will be interested in any information you discover about William Wann also.
Susan Wann swann@bigpond.net.au

WANN/TRUESDALE/MCKENZIE of Ontario Canada

See information on the WANN/TRUESDALE families of Norfolk/Elgin counties in Ontario.

William Wann b. c 1852 married Mary Ann Truesdale 2-20-1873 in Brantford. Mary Ann was living in Norfolk Co at the time she married. Children born were Amelia (Jennie) Wann 1874, Gertrude b. 1876, Charles b. 1880, Herbert b. 1883, William b. 1885, and Ellis b. 1893.

William's parents were a John and Jane Wann, supposedly born in Ireland. Mary Ann Truesdale was d/o John Truesdale and she was born in Waterford, Norfolk Co. Ontario.

William and Mary Ann Wann have been found in census records of Elgin Co., Aldoborough Twp., Norfolk Co., Waterford and possibly Walpole of Norfolk Co.

Mary Ann Wann died 1915 in Eagle Ontario, and she was a widow.

Mary Ann's real mother is unknown, on her death certificate it just states John Truesdale as father, born in Ireland.

Amelia Truesdale (nee McKenzie) died 12-2-1908 in Port Dover Ontario. Only her father's name appears on her death certificate - William McKenzie born Inverness Scotland. She appears to have immigrated to Canada in 1852, however she was born in England.

I have not found any records other than Amelia's marriage to John Truesdale in 1861.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Rhonda in Michigan

From Lucinda Gibbons. I am just starting this search on this side and I am not finding much. Nice to hear from you....I have found census with a Belle as a child of Lucinda and my great grandmother was Isabelle Hibbens who married John Henry Dehart and they had Roy Harvey Dehart who was my grandpa and married Nellie Laverne Wood (Vernie) then they had my mom Patsy Virginia Dehart (married Donald Lee Harvey) and then had me Donna Jean Harvey-1961. I was searching because I have been told as many people have that we come from Indian ancestry. I have found this to be true on three other sides of my mom's parents. I just thought it would be nice to research Rachel Poe and Charlotte, Donna

Regarding Thomas Wann from Harford Co. MD, who lived in Coles Co. IL in the 1840s:

I am hoping that the "female born 1825-1830" is Elizabeth Wann, aka Elizabeth Mann, who married Joseph Riley Icenogle in Coles Co. in 1847. Later census records show that Joseph's wife Eliza(beth) was born in Maryland, and that Thomas Wann was in Coles Co. by 1840, with a daughter of the correct age.

If anyone has any information about this, I'd love to see it.

Cheers,
David Tate

I have to agree with Helen Hewit on this one... I have never found any connection to the William WANN and Ann McGOWAN - WANN family to connect them to Germany. It might be possible and I would absolutely love to connect the lines, but I certainly can't assume it so.

In 1709 The Palatinate Exodus brought a great number of poverty stricken Germans from the Palatinate (also Swiss, who earlier had moved into the Palatinate) into England. England was overwhelmed by the number of poor folks flooding into its borders and orders were sent to stop the exodus of Germans. Many were sent to Ireland.

(***The fact that many were sent to Ireland could in fact be where the connection between the Irish WANN Families and the German WANN families lie; and may even somehow connect the William WANN - Ann McGOWAN family - and other American WANN families who came to Pennsylvania and were referred to as the Pennsylvania Dutch.***)

Some of the exiles were returned to their original country. Queen Anne of England had issued a glowing prospectus of the great opportunities in Pennsylvania and invited the Palatines to go there and take up the rich farmlands. Very few made it to Pennsylvania. But Johann Wilhelm WANN left from Rotterdam (Holland)- which at the time was the largest shipping port of the world - and did indeed sail to Pennsylvania.

I descend from the WANN family (Johann Wilhelm WANN b. 1735 Palentate, Germany d. Dec 1785 New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania) that came to Philadelphia on the ship Patience, which sailed from Rotterdam (Holland), then to Cowes (UK) and finally landed in Pennsylvania on August 11, 1750.

Johann may have had brothers (or other relations) who arrived in America shortly after him. There are records for Peter Wann in 1764 (Imported on the Ship Prince of Wales, James Edgar, Mastr, from Rotterdam, Nov 4 1764), Johann Casper Wann in 1753 (Imported on the Ship Richard and Mary, Qualified 17th September, 1753. Captn John Moore, Commander.), and Jacob Wann in 1752 (Imported on the Ship Brawley *or Rawley*, Capt. John Grove, from Rotterdam, but last from Plymouth at the Court House at Philadelphia, Monday, the 23d of October, 1752).

But even those "possible brothers" who seemed to follow Johann Wilhelm to the USA; no one has ever been able to confirm, without any doubt, they are actually related to him. If William WANN (who married to Ann McGOWAN) ended up in Ireland during the Exodus of Germans into England - it is highly possible that he is related to Johann Wilhelm WANN, perhaps a brother, possibly cousin, nephew, etc.

Here's why:

There is a book, "Historic Background and Annals of the Swiss and German Pioneer Settlers of SouthEastern Pennsylvania, and of their remote ancestors from the middle of the Dark Ages, Down to the Time of the Revolutionary War", by Henry Frank Eshleman, who was an attorney and local historian from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the late 1800's. He was one of the founders of the Lancaster County Historical Society, and died in 1945. I think this book was published in 1917. Mr. Eshleman states he had correspondence with a Wilfred WANN and that there were "several relatives that state three Wann brothers left Germany, with one remaining in Ireland/Wales."

Could the brother who remained in Ireland/Wales be William WANN who married to Ann McGOWAN? It could, but in all reality, it's not probable. William and Johann are 25 years apart and it's more probable that Johann Wilhelm WANN was a brother to the Jacob WANN who sailed into Philadelphia in 1752 - Jacob was born in 1718. Jacob and Johann's mother would have to have been of child-bearing years from 1717-1755, or even longer if she were William's mother. While not impossible, I would have a hard time believing it. It's more probable that William was a nephew or cousin to the Pioneer Pennsylvania WANNs, just looking at the difference in birth dates, and the fact that William was never recorded as being in/around Pennsylvania in that era.

Why would William go to Virginia, when the rest of the family was in Pennsylvania? And why is there no documentation about William WANN going to Virginia from Germany, England or Pennsylvania? Where exactly did he come from? If Germany... then did he go to Ireland first, and then straight to Virginia? Was he born in Ireland? Or is he actually a German emigrant's son - born in Pennsylvania (and not Germany).... one that we just don't know about or haven't documented yet? He may have been born in Germany, too for that matter! There certainly are many questions about William WANN who married Ann McGOWAN as far as where he originated....

Johann Wilhelm WANN on the other hand, is well documented in this country, along with quite a number of his descendants. Something we are still searching for clarity about is who his brothers were, and if they were the Peter WANN, Jacob WANN, and Johann Casper WANN that appeared to sail to America from Rotterdam afer Johann Wilhelm paved the way... ???

I personally believe Jacob WANN probably is Johann Wilhelm's brother, and even though I have him plugged into my database as such, I also jotted in his notes section (which gets published on the web), that he may in fact NOT be a brother to Johann Wilhelm - just in case :)

In any event, somewhere in the back of my mind, knowing how rare the WANN surname was in the 18th century, I can't help but believe William WANN who married Ann McGOWAN is related somehow to the Pennsylvania Dutch Pioneers, I just can't seem to connect them!

Now I have a new genealogical mystery to play with :)

Joni

Joni FORTIER> Janna DENTON> Eva L. WANN> Daniel WANN> Daniel WANN> Daniel WANN> Jacob Johannes WANN> Johann Wilhelm WANN> possibly Jacob WANN ? > possibly Frantz WANN ? >
Jane, it's funny you mention Ann McGOWAN being a Scot/wondering if William WANN would have married her..

I was just reading something at http://www.irishroots.com yesterday evening about the differences between Mac, Mc and O' surnames. (I have McKENNA, McAULEY and McDERMOTTs in my family tree and was just gathering some knowledge.)

I would have to say that if William WANN truly is from or lived in Ireland during his probable marrying years, it's more than entirely possible that he married a Scot, based on what I read at irishroots.com last night! What I learned about was how deeply the Scots and Irish intermingled for centuries and how closely related they truly are/were.

Here's an excerpt from a book called, "Mac, Mc, and O Names in Ireland, Scotland, & America", Compiled and written by Michael C. O’Laughlin:

"By Mac, Mc, and 'O', you'll always know a true Irish or Scotsman so they say ".......The purpose of publishing this work is to introduce you to the meaning and use of these family names. Mac names originate in Scotland AND Ireland. The 'O' names, which appeared first by many accounts, is a name considered exclusively Irish. Nearly all old Irish surnames were originally prefixed with Mac or 'O'. They were such attractive additions to a name that some families settling in Ireland from abroad took a name with a Mac prefix. This included the Vikings & the Normans ! Some old Irish families would drop the Mac or 'O' during certain periods of turmoil.....so the plot thickens when trying to determine exactly what your name might have been spelled like then.

One fact needs to be recognized immediately. There is no difference between Mac, Mc, and M'. You cannot say one form is Scottish and one is Irish. It becomes obvious that Mc and M' are both merely shortened forms of Mac, which is the originally Gaelic form that has come to stand for 'descendant of'. Originally the 'Mac' meant 'son of', and the 'O' stood for 'grandson of'. Today both simply mean 'descendant of', or perhaps more generally in some cases 'follower of'. (The latter is more often ascribed to 'Gil' names like Gilmartin or Kilmartin, coming from the Gaelic 'giolla'). Census records often use the shortened forms of Mac, it simply saved time and space, as in the census records shown in this book.

Dropping the Mac or the O from names It is well known that the Mac and O have been dropped and added at will. In Ireland, especially in the area known as the 'Pale' around Dublin, it was declared that the Irish take on names in an English form. Many a man would drop the Mac and O when doing business with the powers that be, and then add it back again when among old Irish friends. The census taker could have used either form, with or without the Gaelic 'prefix' so to speak. This means you may have to look for both forms of the name when you go back into the records ! That is in addition to looking for other ways of spelling altogether - some examples of that will be given further on in this book. Suffice it to say that the sound of the name becomes more important than the spelling of the name at times.

Carrying things to an extreme, I will here illustrate the various forms a single name could take. Not only can the Mac or O be dropped, the Mac might change to Mc, M' or Mag at random. In a few instances the wrong prefix has been put back on the name! Here are samples of the kinds of changes you might see in your Mac or Mc name.

MacAmhlaoibh (The old form of the name)
McAuley (Mac changed to Mc)
M'Auly (Mc changed to M', and 'ey' changed to 'y'.)
M'Ouly ('A' changed to 'O', vowels interchanged in older records)
M. Auley (Mac changed to M. )
MacCauley ( The 'c' in Mac becomes a 'cC' )
MacCalley (vowel 'u' is dropped, the 'l' becomes 'll')
MacGawley ( 'g' substituted for a 'c'. )
Magawley (Mac changed to 'Mag' - not as common.)
Cawley (Mac dropped, but the 'C' stays
Cawllie ('ey' changed to 'ie'.)
Gawly (Name beginning with 'C' is changed to 'G'.)
O'Cauley (Rare Mac name changing to an 'O' name.)

There were no 'Mac' names among the top 50 in England. It is easy to see that there is much in common with Irish and Scottish Macs, particulary when you begin to look at these name spellings in early America.

Inside - Out
Scotland mirrors Ireland in many respects, although the spellings for similar names are different, particularly after the 17th century. At one point some of the highland Scots dropped the Mac from their names under political pressure, bowing to the politics of the day. (They would of course be free to add the Mac back again later.) Later, when it became fashionable, some lowland Scots added Mac to their names - where there had never been one! Add to this the fact that Irish Macs arrived in the Scottish highlands from Ireland originally, and that the Irish and Scots mixed for centuries in the lowlands. Distinctions become blurred. There are however many Mac names that are recognized as distinctively Irish or Scottish today. (see chart later in this book). Some Scotsmen today will say that you cannot capitalize the first letter in the name that comes after the Mac, unless you are indeed the son of the man being named. i.e. most people should be using Macdonald, not MacDonald - unless your fathers name is indeed Donald.

Most Numerous
Mac names that retain the 'Mac' prefix are numerous today in Ireland, Scotland and America. Indeed some phone books are composed it seems by a majority of 'Macs'!. Mac Names show up as relatively numerous in the 1790 census of the United States (see charts later in this book). When we look at the top 100 most numerous names that still retained the Mac or Mc in 1890, we find the following most numerous in Ireland. The rank of the name in the top 100 is given before the name:

13. McCarthy
21. McLaughlin
55. McGrath
63. McDonnell (sometimes O'Donnell & McDonald))
64. McMahon
88. McKenna
94. McNamara
95. McDonald
96. McDermot

In the top 50 names in Scotland, 'Mac' names include the following:

2. M'Donald
12. McKenzie
15. M'Kay
22. M'Lean (sometimes McLane)
30. M'Leod (sometimes McCloud)
39. M'Intosh (also found as Mackintosh)
44. M'Gregor (sometimes found as 'Gregory' )"

So my synopsis - -
Reading about the surnames, and just thinking if William WANN was in Ireland during his marrying years, he could have very feasibly met a Scottish, Irish or Scots-Irish woman and taken her for his bride, sure!

Anybody care to exchange notes? I have her father, maybe her mother, and think I have her paternal grandparents. I do have her brother David McGowan - he was my fourth Great Grandpa.

Info on Nellie: Born 31 Jan 1879 in Philadelphia. She married first to Harry F. Hetzner about 1896. They had a son, Percy Hetzner, born 26 May 1898. They divorced and she remarried to Joseph B. Allcutt on 2 Jun 1906. They had 2 girls: Irma Jeanette Allcutt, born 5 Dec 1909 (my grandmother) and Josephine Allcutt, born 3 Jan 1911. Irma died in 1937 - my mother was very young and does not remember her other than someone who was sick. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know. I do belong to DAR through another ancestor and have found severel more patriots that I would like to do supplementals for if I could afford the fees! Kathy

This is more than I ever dreamed possible! What I have for Harry is: Born 13 Jan 1842 in Baltimore - died 22 Sep 1925 in Philadelphia, PA. Buried 24 Sep 1925 in Fernwood Cemetery, (Delaware County), Pennsylvania. He married Mary Jane (or Jennie) Gilling about 1875. They are listed on the 1900 Census in Philadelphia as being married 25 years. Occupation: Printer. His death certificate lists his name as Harry W. Wann, but he is listed on the 1850 census as William H.

Harry & Jennie had 3 children: Percy James Wann born June 1876, Nellie (or Ellen M) Wann b. 31 Jan 1879, and Dora Wann b. Jul 1884. Nellie is my maternal great grandmother.

Will be glad to send additional information on Nellie's descendants if you would like. Still looking for information on Jennie Gilling.........

Thanks, again for all your information. It's a treat!

Kathy

Well it is nice to make someone happy. Since you responded here is some more information. Names of children from 1850 and 1860 MD census. Daughter Elizabeth Ann married John F. Lingan on May 11, 1859. She died before 1900. John Alexander Wann b. April 17, 1839 married Elizabeth H. O'Donnell. He died Feb. 21, 1910. I know nothing about William Harry Wann b. 1841, so if you had information on him, I would appreciate it. Mary Jane Wann b. 1845 married Josiah M. Herman at a Meth. Prot Church in Bel Air. See 1910 census. Susan Wann married James Reynolds. Hannah Wann married Peter O. Herman. Birth dates for children in 1860,60 census do not always match after they married. Obituary from Aegis: 26 July 1901: William J. Wann died at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Josiah M. Herman, near Churchville on last Friday in his 91st year, one of the eldest residents of Harford County. He was a prominent figure in Masonry as his father had been before him. He had been Templar at Mt. Ararat Lodge for the past 50 years. He was survived by five children - three daughters: Mrs. Josiah M. Herman, Mrs. James M. Reynolds and Mrs. Peter O. Herman and two sons: J. A. and Harry Wann. He had 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Buried at Rock Spring Cemetery. I am in Maryland. Can I be of more help?
Incidentally, I am surprised that your information indicates that Harry was born in Baltimore and not Harford Co where his parents lived. They lived and died there. Where did you find that reference to Baltimore? When I looked at my notes, the 1860 census did have him living with his parents in Harford Co. and he was an apprentice printer then. I wonder why he moved to Philadelphia.

Yes, I would be happy to receive some information on Nellie. I don't know how far back you want to go on the Wann's. This is the obituary on Wm. J. Wann's father that was in the Bel Air Aegis in May 1870 said: "John Wann, Esq. died at his residence near "the Hickory" in this county, on Monday morning last in the eighty-fourth day of his age." It said he was a Justice of the Peace for many years and was trusted by his fellow men as a man of much integrity and scrupulous honesty of purpose. He was probably the oldest member of Mt. Ararat Lodge, in the county and was always much devoted to the principles of masonry. His portrait painted in oil adorns the lodge room at Bel Air and is regarded by the surviving members of the lodge as a valuable memento of their venerated brother who has passed away." He was born June 22, 1787 and died May 27, 1870. His father was also named John Wann, born abt 1754 in Germany and who died August 14, 1824 in Harford Co. MD. As I mentioned he was a Rev. War patriot and his information is also in the DAR library and his pension papers are on Heritage Quest if you have access to that. I did join the DAR a couple of years ago, and of course you could too if interested. The documentation takes awhile. Claire
We might have the same family. I do have a Thomas Wann that had a son, George, b. about 1846 in Illinois but I have no other information about George. However, I have lots of information on his father Thomas and mother Hestor Grafton Wann. Thomas was one of 10 children, born in Harford County Maryland. He was the son of John Wann (a Rev. War patriot) and Susannah Reinhart Wann. Thomas had 8 other children other than this George. A female born 1825-1830, then John b. 1827, William b. 1830, Catherine b. 1833 who married Levi Long. Mary S. b. 1835, Thomas b. 1836 who married Charlotte and died in Minneapolis, Margaretta, Daniel and then George b. 1846ish. Thomas migrated to Illinois in the late 1830's and is found in the 1840 census. In the 1850 census, he is shown with his children including a George, age 4. Does this sound like your George Wann? I am quite willing to share my information on this branch of the family. As I said, I had nothing on George.
