Wappat (and Wappett) Family, Durham

The origin of the Wappat family name can be traced to Ralph Wappat alias Johnson, born 1673 Winston, Durham. His father Ralph Johnson, born 1648, was from a wealthy family who owned at one stage lands at Whorlton Hall, School Aycliffe, Stubb House and Woodholme. We have the Johnson line back to Christopher Johnson, born 1510, a yeoman. To date there appear to be 70 Johnson's on the Johnson tree, yet their name died out with Elizabeth Johnson born 1713 in Whorlton. The Johnson line only remains through Ralph Wappat alias Johnson. There are 240 Wappat decendants from Ralph, many of whom are still in the North East, around Hebburn, Newcastle, Richmond, and Darlington. There are branches of the tree in New York State, Alaska, Canada and Mexico. Confusion still remains as to the origin of the name, and the connection with a separate family of Wappett's who appear to have originated from around Appleby and Kirkby Stephen in Westmorland, now Cumbria. I am collating and updating the research of Frank Wappat, who has been working on the tree for a number of years, and it is he who should be credited. If you are a relative, or have the name, please get in touch. We have much more information available, as well as the virtually complete tree.
Wappat and Wappett's

I am currently collating and updating the research of my cousin Frank Wappat, BBC broadcaster. We have the Wappat family tree, now containing 240 Wappat's, back to Ralph Wappat alias Johnson born 1673 Whorlton, Durham, and then the Johnson line back to Christopher Johnson, born 1510 Whorlton. The family has remained associated with Whorlton, Durham for over 350 years, until 1838, with William Pearson Wappat, the last Wappat born there. I would like to hear from anyone with any information or interest in the Wappat or Wappett family name. There are Wappett's on the Wappat tree, but we have also collated a separate tree of Wappett's from Westmorland.

Wappat's in the US

Just to correct the previous message. I have made excellent contact with Brad Wappat, of Oneonta, NY who is the great grandson of William Wappat, who emigrated to the US in 1865, from Newcastle Upon Tyne, England.
William's son Robert David was the only child of four to have a child, Robert David, of whom all the US Wappat's are decended.
Andrew
