My name is Marilyn Edwards Wetherington. My ggg grandfather, James Edwards, married Betsy Ward in 1808 in Morgan Co., GA but she apparently died before 1813. William Ward was in Morgan Co. in 1820. Is Betsy Ward from this family or from some other Ward family?

I set up an e-mail account for my sister, JaVene Lamb, but she refuses to use a computer so I use this e-mail for my Ancestry.com account. My e-mail is m_wetherington@Yahoo.com

It sounds like your Wards are of a different line I think. They were both in Texas, but mine came from Connecticut specifically. Thank you though!

Thanks John.

I did not have the census data for 1920 or 1930. I had no idea that the family had moved to Arizona, so that is a revelation, or that W. George was a widower in 1920. I am going to have to take a close look at that. Also, I think the Charlotte H. Ward that was a niece is likely the Charlotte I am looking for. I will need more hard evidence than that to prove the link though. I am going to search for the Mary Webster to see if she turns up in Texas also. As for the rest, I need to link this Charlotte to my family before I can dig further. This information has helped me alot! Thanks.

Devin,
I apologize, I didn't receive your response message in July for some reason. I probably wouldn't have had much to respond with back then anyway. Since then, I have linked my great grandfather to his Ward family, all who appear to originate in Georgia - either Carroll County or Heard County. My great grandfather, William Andrew Ward moved with his in-laws to Bell County, TX between 1907 and 1910.

If you think information on the Georgia line of Wards will be helpful to your research, please let me know.
Best of luck with your Charlotte!
Bonnie

I am looking for information on Julins Smith Ward who was married to Martha Anna Wilson around 1860. They were living in Mendota, Illinois. Martha Anna's maiden name was Wilson. She later married William Bunten Ronald. Her daughter, Martha E. Ward later married John Ronald. Martha E. and John are my maternal great, great grandparents. I am particularly interested in what happened to Julins Smith Ward. I know he survived the war, but did not return to the marriage. Did he go to Alaska to the gold fields? And, I would like to know about a family by the name of Boyd (I believe they were from Ireland) that came to the aid of Martha Anna and her children. This Boyd family resided in Iowa in the late 1800's. Were they neighbors in Illinois? Any information on these three families (Wilson, Ward, and Boyd) and how they are interconnected would be very helpful. Thank you. Dixie Gaer

You have a nice lot of replies so my answer may not be news to you but just in case it can help. The 1851 census for Loughborough, Frontenac co. shows the following: Louis Ward laborer Montreal R. Catholic 58; Mary Ward Scotland E. Methodist 38; Edward Ward sheffield Methodist 18; Nicholas Sheffield Methodist 15; Harriet Drighton Methodist 11; Angeline Kingston Methodist 13; Marshal Portland Methodist 12; joseph Portland Methodist 10; Mary Portland Methodist 9; Amelia Portland Methodist 5; Louis Portland Methodist 3; Catharine Portland Methodist 1.Its place of birth, religion and age.
The only reason I noticed this citation was the name Amelia Ward. I am looking for an Amelia Ward born ca. 1830 in this area or Storrington. Maybe you can help me.

I'm trying to find the descendants, if any, of Charles Ward who was born in April 1876 (day unknown) in Lawrence Co., KY to parents Martin Van Buren Ward (1843-1912) and Sarah Catherine Hicks (1842-1909).

I last found Charles in the 1900 US Census living with his brother Albert, and his mother Catherine in District 72, Cherokee, Lawrence Co., Ky, household #270/277. After that, the trail becomes very confusing at best.

Is there anyone out there who knows this particular branch of the Ward family line? Willing to share what I have on my Ward family line in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. Thanks in advance!

Wards meet the Hobsons in Greene Cty, IL

This is an excerpt from a newly discovered manuscript titled "The History of the Ward Family", typed in 1893 by John Pickering Ward.

About two weeks after the native had taught the emigrants how to build a fire, old Richard sat enjoying himself in the cabin, "I daresay Bessie, that outside of our family, the Morfoots, and Dodsons, we will end our days in this wilderness, and never set eyes on another Englishman." Just then the dog barked and Mary went to the door. "My word," said she, "'ere comes two fine Gentlemen, and I'll bet aught, that they are both Englishmen." And so they were. It was Peter John and his brother Robert Hobson. They had followed the Wards, having been told at St. Louis about the little colony north of the Macoupin Creek. They were both Englishmen and Peter John, the son of an English clergyman, had been educated at Oxford. He and Robert soon went into business selling goods, and trying to build up a town on the Mound, one and one-half miles north east of Richard Ward's place. They called it Mount Pleasant. When the county was organized a few years later, Thomas Carlin laid off the present site of the town of Carrollton, and beat the Hobsons at the election. Robert Hobson died soon after from the effects of malarial fever and bad medical practice, for it was the day of blistering, bleeding, and calomel and jalap. Peter John moved the store to a mill site three miles north west of Carrollton, and started a plant called Coonsville. Peter John soon had the best store in the country the best mill, and a whiskey distillery of great capacity, which made a cash market for all the surplus corn in Greene County.

These excerpts are from a newly-discovered 1893 manuscript titled "The History of the Ward" famly by John Pickering Ward. Every attempt has been made to retype this in it's original form. No claims to accuracy are made.

Richard had about $2500 left. He sent Jonas out to buy a team. He bought four fine mares, out on the Six
Mile Prairie in Illinois. Then in St. Louis he bought a new wagon, harness for the mares, a saddle and a few
tools, such as axes, etc. About the 10th of March they loaded up their wagon, harnessed the four mares to it, and
hired another team to help out. After much delay with the mirey roads, they at last reached Absalom Clarks and
stayed all night. The next morning old Mr. Ward went over to Mr. Stouts to pay for the improvements and get
possession, but old Stout was drunk and, thinking about the war and the battle of New Orleans, he called Richard a
"damned old Britisher" and ordered him off. Ward went back to Clarks and Clark took him over to Mr. White who had
a cabin and a squatter claim on the west edge of the prairie, which was bought for $200, and the Wards moved in and
were at home. It was the sixteenth day of March, 1821. The first thing to do when the family reached the cabin
was to build a fire, as it was a cold day. White elm was the handiest tree to cut and white elm, green, was the
foundation of the first English fire that was started in that part of Illinois, and such a fire as it was--nothing
but smoke. Everybody shivered. Mrs. Ward broke down with a home-sick cry, "Oh, if I were only back in England
with coal, red hot, in the grate, I never would leave it again, never". "Pshaw, pshaw," said old Richard, "We must
larn the ways o' the country. I daresay there is a way o' mackin' a fire if we did but know 'ow to go hat it."
Just then a native walked in at the open door. "Howdy, howdy. Wat yer tryin' to make a fire out o' water ellum
fer? Hit won't burn in a thousan' ye'r. Jess let me show ye the kind of wood to get." With that he walked out
into the thicket and found a dead elm pole full of fine branches, hard as bone. "Now thar it is. That is the kind
er wood the Devil gits when he wants to make a special hot fire. He jest natcherly pokes in the dead ellum poles
and maker 'er bile." The two boys, Jonas and John, carried the wood, and soon prepared the first dinner. That was
the last trouble the Wards had about fire wood, for Jonas and John carried a huge pile of elm poles, and before
they were consumed they had learned about hickory and white oak.

Christopher James Ward June 22, 1937 - September 10, 2009

Christopher James Ward June 22, 1937 - September 10, 2009 On September 10, 2009, Christopher Ward, husband, father, businessman, and community leader passed away at age 72 after a five year battle with cancer. Chris lived a vital and passionate life and will be remembered for his endless energy, his love of family, and his commitment to the church. He was preceded in death by his wife Gretchen, and is survived by his brother Michael, his three children Nicholas, Andrew, and Laura and eight grandchildren. Chris Ward grew up in Los Angeles and went to high school at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1959 and received his MBA from the Claremont Graduate School in 1966. While at MIT, Chris met his wife, Gretchen Van de Kamp. Married in their early twenties, they shared a life-long passion for art, education and family. Chris was a devoted family man who respected and supported his children's varied interests. In 1960, Chris worked for Kaiser Steel as an Industrial Engineer in Fontana. In 1974, he relocated to Piedmont when he joined the finance department of Kaiser Steel where he became Treasurer. . Later Chris worked as a Treasurer for Bechtel, Hexcel, and then Guy F. Atkinson. Chris retired in 1994 and continued sharing his organizational knowledge, energy and interests as a member of the board of directors for several companies including: Qualimatrix and Lawry's Restaurants; College Preparatory School and the Mike Vax Jazz Orchestra. Chris was kind, honest, generous, optimistic, and always had a smile. He had a genuine interest in everyone, loved talking to people and sharing information. He was a devoted Catholic his entire life and supported many local parish communities and the building of the new Christ the Light Cathedral in Oakland. In the Cathedral, full of light and space, with God and his family and friends in attendance, all witnessed a grand send-off for Chris Ward by the cathedral choir and a lone resonating trumpet playing Amazing Grace. He will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) via www.looktothestars.org/charity/448-nccra, or by mail at 1201 West 5th Street, Suite T-700, Los Angeles, CA 90017 "in memory of Christopher Ward".

Read more: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/10/10/...
