Wareham family, Jamaica, New York, Nova Scotia...

Hello I am looking for any Wareham family member from these places. Been looking for info on my Husband Grandfather Leopold A Wareham born May 25 1881. As far as I know he worked over 56 years on ships. Looks like he was born in Kingston, Jamaica and came to New York in 1918 and then Married May Hilda Jone In Nova Scotia but ended up back in New york for the rest of his life have in New York age 70. This is all I know would love to find other family members or more info on Leopold. He must have been married before since he was 38 when he came here and was 45 when he married Mary in Nova Scotia. I know there kids ended up in Group home. So Im thinking the wife died and he wasn't around. but could be wrong. Well Looking forward in hearing from anyone that can help
thanks Heather Wareham

Thanks for all the replies, it seems I am talking to two relatives! I would be fascinated to know what more information you have on the UK and USA Warehams. My line of the Warehams (Elizabeth born in 1854) married Samuel Lewis on 20 Oct 1872 at Southampton Registry office and they had several children (12 at the last count), including my great grandmother Florence Annie Lewis. Interestingly, another of their children, Fred Lewis emigrated to the USA in the early 1900s to live in Bountiful, Utah (I believe they were Mormons).

Keep in touch!
Liz

You are so lucky to have family details, we have a photo of some getlemen posing outside a Butchers shop (meat wholesaler) probably dated around 1890 - 1900's but we are still trying to work out who the gentlemen are!Would you like a copy when we have put names to the faces? Had a good day in Winchester records checking Warehams will let you know if I find anything interesting. I will pass on to the grandchildren of Harry Wareham born 1909 grandson of George and Clara that you have more information. They live in your country one lives Atlanta and the other one in Memphis, Tennesse. I live about 5 miles outside of Southampton and a few miles away from where the original Warehams have been traced to North Baddesley near Romsey in Hampshire.England. Good Hunting.

I've not downloaded the file yet. Last winters project was to transfer it from paper to a PAF file. This winter after review, I'll post it. The oral history is just that, stories from my relatives all gone now. I should write it all down.

George Wareham's son, Harry(bn 1847) had a brother Fred whom was said to have been a sailor and drowned at sea so says oral family history. Harry married Mary Ann Bolwell (bn 1852 England)26 Aug 1866 at Saint Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire, emigrating to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA in 1872. There Harry was a wholesale butcher owning quite a bit of Lake Michigan lake front. The census lists an Irish Maid. They moved to a ranch outside of Indianola, Iowa for health reasons and raised cattle. Harry died in 1935 in Indianola. My Dad said he made and lost three fortunes. His daughter Amy (bn 1868) is my Great-gt grandmother. She died in 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.I have photographs of her and her sister and I think one of her father Harry. No mention of a brother George.

I am working on the Wareham's of Southampton family tree at the moment and have just been looking at your great gt Grandfathers tree. Your correct in saying that Harrys father was George Wareham and his wife Patience bn 1818 in Fawley, HAMPSHIRE not Berkshire. Believe her maiden name to be Cotton but think George was her second marriage so states Pearce.Fawley is a town about 7- 8 miles away from the centre of Southampton. So she was probably working in Southampton. Henrys brother George who married Clara Bishop and was also a Butcher in the St Marys part of Southampton, youngest son was my GT GT Uncle. William A E Wareham. I know that in 1881 Henry (Harry)was a self employed meat marketer living in Cook, Chicago can you tell me anymore about their life in the States. Did any of his brothers join him out there.

Hi Jeanie,
Thanks for replying to my post. I have come across new information, since I posted my last message, that does indicate that Jacob is George's father and William Oliver and Samuel are George's brothers, along with another brother Phillip Leroy, and two sisters, Margaretta Wareham Milar and Mary Ann Wareham Goodman. According to what I have been told by another researcher their mother was a full-blooded Indian and all the children were born in Middleton Twp., Cumberland Co., PA. Also, it is possible that the father of Jacob was Phillip Wareham, but I have not verified that at this point.
I have also found information collaborating the 2nd marriage of George to Maria (Polly) Spangler on 6/21/1846 in Franklin Co., OH and the birth of a daughter to them before George died of Cholera in Aug. 1849.
I have not run across a Joseph or Ann Bridget Wareham in my research as of yet, but I will keep you in mind if I do.
To everyone out there, I would still like to hear from anybody that has any connections to my Warehams. Thanks and Happy Hunting!!
Therese

Hi :)

Looked at your 6 postings. Only combination found is this:

William Henry Wareham, born 4q. 1882, Winchester RD

1901 family is living in the parish of Winchester St. Bartholomew Hyde.
Father: Thomas Wareham, b. abt. 1853, Sparsholt, Hampshire
Mother: Maria, b. abt. 1848, Timworth, Suffolk

A Thomas Wareham married a Maria Rickwood, 4q. 1875, Winchester RD. Marias age and palce of birth fits with the 1901 census.

Charles Alfred Wareham was born 3 q. 1903, Winchester RD. You will have to order his birth cert to find out who is his mother.

William Henry Wareham could have married a Elizabeth Ann Henshall OR a Emma Griffiths, 3 q. 1902, Nantwich RD Cheshire. You will be able to confirm names in Charles Alfreds birth cert.

Hope this will help you :)

Regards
Egdal
Denmark
Re: Elizabeth Wareham of Southampton, Eng

I have been tracing back my Great Grandmother, Amy Wareham bn 1868 of Southampton, England. She came to the US about 1878(?) with her brother Harry bn 1872 and sister Kate bn 1873. Her parents were Harry Wareham bn 1847 in Southampton, and wife Mary Ann Bolwell bn 1852. I believe Harry's father to be George Wareham bn 1820 of Southampton. His wife in the 1881 census is listed as "P" bn 1818 in Fawley, Berkshire. George and "P" lived at 11 Winchester St in 1881. George was a butcher as was his son Harry who opened a wholesale butcher shop in Chicago in 1881 before moving on to Iowa to run a ranch. If any of this intersects, let me know.

My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Wareham who was born in 1854 in Southampton to George Wareham and Patience Pearce. I believe George was a butcher in the St Mary's area of the town.

I know that Elizabeth married Samuel Lewis in 1872, but I know little about her parents other than their names and vague dates. Does anyone know any more about the Warehams of Southampton?

Thanks
Liz

Hi ,
I was just searching the Wareham Message board in rootsweb and found your message about searching for ALL Warehams. I live the the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in an area once called the "Copper Country" after all the copper mines that were here. My Gr Gr Gr Grandfather William Wareham migrated to Canada from Wadebridge Cornwall around 1850. Four of his sons migrated to the "Copper Country". One was my Gr Gr grandfather Mathew Heath. I would like to share any info you might have. Thanks
Bob
