My ggg grandfather William M. Fox (born 1801/1804) brought into the family the remark that our name "should've been Worley." The more I look into it, the more I wonder if he meant Warlick. My ggggg grandfather was Francis Fox who lived in Burke Co., NC. He had a son named Francis Jr. and the two are found on the 1800 Wilkes Co., NC census. After Jr. passed away, his wife Bridget and two of their children, who were adults then, lived in what is now Caldwell Co., NC. Their son, William M., married a woman who might have had Native American relatives of Forsythe Co. I find the Warlick name in all three counties and have read it is of Germanic origin. I believe Bridget was living near Moravian Falls. The wives of William's brothers may have been of German descent. Could Francis Jr. or William have been adopted? Was either of them really a Warlick adopted and then going by the name Fox? William moved and settled in Yancey Co., NC with his wife.I did find it strange that William went by the "Fox" spelling and later is shown as "Foxx" on a marriage certificate to his second wife. (Could be a mistake, though). Also, on William's son's death certificate where it states where the father is from, it oddly says that William is from "across water." That seemed strange too, being that Wilkes wasn't mentioned instead. Another question: where do the western NC Warlick families originate from---another area of NC....another state?
