John Warrington married Rachel Pate, Colonial Virginia

Rachel was the daughter of Matthew Pate and Anne Read (married c. 1710) and the granddaughter of Col. Thomas Pate. Anne Read was the granddaughter of Col. George Read, who was a greatgreat-grandfather of George Washington.

Her first marriage was to Robert Robinson, and John Warrington was her second husband.

Col. Thomas Pate was born in England c. 1650, emigrated to Colonial Virginia in 1672, and inherited a 2100-acre tobacco plantation in Gloucester County. About 1690, he started ferry operations across the York River to what became the port city of Yorktown, primarily for export of tobacco to England. By 1694, he also owned an ordinary (inn) at the port of Yorktown, where he died in 1703.

He held a number of civil and military positions in Gloucester County, representing the county in the House of Burgesses in 1684. He was a church warden and vestryman of the Petsworth Parish Church in Gloucester for at least seven years. Nathaniel Bacon, leader of Bacon's Rebellion, died in Col. Pate's home in 1676.

He married Elizabeth (surname unknown) c. 1675. They apparently had six children, who were all baptized at Abingdon Parish Church. Their children, as recorded in the church's registry, were:
John -- born 1677, died 1706 (His daughter Sarah married Col. Wilson Cary c. 1728.)
[likely daughter] -- 1679/80 (name illegible)
Elizabeth -- born 1680
Mary -- born 1684
Matthew -- born 1686 (see list of children below)
William -- born 1689

Matthew Pate married Anne Read c. 1710, granddaughter of Col. George Read, who was a greatgreat-grandfather of George Washington. Here are their children:
Jacob -- married Zilla Broach. Died 1752, Surry County, Virginia. [They were not the parents of Rev. William Pate d. 1837 in Georgia.]
Sarah -- married William Anderson 1736-7
Jeremiah -- married (?) Bender
Matthew married (?) Buck
Rebecca -- married George Newell
Rachel -- married 1. Robert Robinson, 2. John Warrington
Thomas -- born 1728, died 1814, married Hannah Philips Williams (a widow)

Caution: There may be more misinformation about this family on the Internet, particularly Jacob and Zilla, than any other American Pate family. This is primarily due to the booklet published by John Ben Pate c. 1915. This work should be disregarded concerning this family and its ancestry. For a more reliable source about the descendants of Matthew Pate and Anne Read, consult the William & Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol XII, 1904, pgs. 119-120 and 196-198, which is available on the Internet.

This Thomas Pate family remains an unsolved mystery regarding its present-day descendants, despite the efforts of the greatest Pate genealogists in its history, such as the late Jinks Pate-Lee, Joel Pate, and Dr. Jim Peacock. Traditional genealogy using both family and public records is now providing very little information. It appears that our best hope to link present-day Pate families to this early American family is through genetic genealogy, or DNA analysis.

Fortunately, we have a ready resource for genetic genealogy through our Pate DNA Project. Though founded only three years ago, we have 110 members, and we are certain that a descendant of this family can be linked to one of the family lines in our Project.

If you know, or if you are personally, a documented male Pate descendant of this family, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Grants for DNA tests are available through the generosity of our Project's members for any man who may need assistance in purchasing the test or who would otherwise have no interest in joining. Inquiries to me will be held in strictest confidence by the administrators of the Project.

For all descendants of Col. Thomas Pate, the Pate DNA Project, through its Pate Genealogical Convocation, has placed an impressive memorial marker for him in the beautiful and historic cemetery of Grace Episcopal Church (the original York Parish Church) in Yorktown. This marker was placed in September 2008 in one of the most desirable places in the cemetery, close to the church and next to the gravestone for George Read, gg-gf of George Washington.

I have also prepared a timeline for the life of Col. Thomas Pate, which I believe is the most complete and comprehensive study of his history and accomplishments ever compiled. Since it is lengthy (three pages) and the format would not present well on this website, I will send a copy of it by email attachment (PDF), to anyone who sends me an email requesting it.

For any descendant, this is a great opportunity to make a significant and unique contribution to Pate genealogy, helping solve one of its oldest and most difficult mysteries.

All comments, corrections, and questions are welcome, either on this website or by private email.

You are invited to view our Project's website at this link: www.familytreedna.com/public/pate-dna-project . You may find the list of most distant ancestors informative on our chart of "Y-DNA Results".

A. J. Pate
Group Administrator
Pate DNA Project

Do you know who William Y. Warrington's parents were, when/where he was born, when/where he died, and when/where he married Harriet Wicks? Also, do you know the maiden name of Chauncey Warrington's wife Carrie, and where/when she and Chauncey died? I've been working to prove that Harriet Wicks was Chauncey's mother. Apparently William Warrington died before 1866? (Harriet's first child with 2nd husband Ezra F. Stephenson was born about December of 1866).

Thank you

That would be difficult as Rev. Thomas Warrington died in 1770. Rachel Warrington gave birth to Lewis Warrington (if War of 1812 fame) in 1782, making her a maximum of 12 years old when giving birth. They all lived in Williamsburg, VA. I think that you have a name coincidence.

Hello.

My Grandmothers name was Mary Louise Warrington and she was Maltese. The story that I have been told is that her Grandfather and his brother were sailors in the 1800s and originated in the UK, he settled in Malta and married a maltese woman. The family remain in Sliema, by Gran married an English man and moved to England and her sister Mary Dolores also moved to the UK. As far as I know there mother was called Mary Theresa.

I'm only just staring to take a look at my family history, but I was wondering if this was a story you were familar with?

Hi, I saw your post and hoped you might be able to help me. do you know if Pearson Warrington had a sister named Beulah? My gg.grandmother was Beulah Warrington,b. New Jersey, 1799, daughter of Enoch Warrington who was married to Rachel _. Beulah was born in New Jersey and married (around 1818) a Jacob R. Watson, of New Lisbon, columbiana Co. Ohio. Beulah's children's names were Rebecca, Jacob, George W., David, John, Samuel, Mary Jane, and Sarah and Joseph Warrington Watson, my g.grandfather. I know that Beulah was a quaker. Any help that you might be able to give me would be very much appreciated. I know that Pearson Warrington was the son of Enoch Warrington and Rachel Pearson and feel it is very likely that he was my Beulah's brother, but sadly I have been unable to trace her mother's maiden name.

Hello Ron,
I am trying to research the family tree of Joyce Warrington. I did a bit of a double take at your message, as her great grandfather was Robert William Warrington, wife Ellen Mary, (think her maiden name was Mansfield), and their children were, William Joseph, (Joyce's grandfather), Alfred A, George Edward, Thomas, Ellen, Hettie and Alice. (names from census details I have found so far). Haven't located Lionel so far.

Have you found any further information about the family?
Hope to hear from you soon

Lois C

Hi Ron,
Many thanks indeed for the information you have given me.
Joyce is the daughter of Maurice Warrington, who in turn was the son of William Joseph Warrington.
From what I have gathered so far today, (only been doing the research for a day!) William Joseph Warrington married Ada Eliza Quartly in 1898, and their children were, Kathleen; Helen; Maurice; Nancy. Ada died and William Joseph remarried to Ellen Fanny Smith, and they had a daughter called Megan.

I have living with me, Joyce's son, Nic. We are both very excited at finding you so soon after I had begun my search.

It is probably better to continue with information about this via email. I can be contacted at - Myoutbackhippies at aol dot com. If that's OK??

Look forward to hearing from you

Lois

I am looking for information on the Warrington family of John Warrington and Hannah Stocker on down through his grandson Samuel Warrington and Sam's kids who immigrated to the United States. I do have quite a bit of info but I was wondering if there were any family history books on this family? Also, can anyone go back farther then John Warrington and Hannah Stocker?

Warrington's in Ontario, Canada

I have in my possession a copy of a newspaper article and hand written on it, is the date of June 23, 1930.
This article is with regard to the death of two Warrington brothers, Stephen and James. They were killed in an auto crash near Ottawa. James, 21 at the time, was one of the best known parachute jumpers in Canada and was stationed with the parachute section of the department of national defence in Ottawa. Stephen, 24, at the time, was quartered at Base Borden.
Among the mourners, were their parents, James and Florence Warrington of 74 Dentonia Ave. Also there was Ethel and Arthur Warrington. The brothers were buried side by side at St. John's Norway Cemetery in Toronto. Full military honors were accorded the brothers.
Any additional information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Ingrid
