Sid F. Washam Jr.
Mr. Washam, 86, a loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away on November 4, 2007. Born in Charlotte, NC on February 19, 1921, he was the youngest of seven children born to the late Sidney Washam and Mattie Torrence Washam. Sid was a graduate of Sharon High School and was married to Betty Garris Washam for 65 wonderful years.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and was present at the signing of the treaty aboard the USS Missouri between the United States and Japan.
Sid was one of the founding fathers of Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Department which was the second volunteer unit organized in Mecklenburg County. He was employed by the Mecklenburg County School System, A&P Tea Company, and retired as a Deputy Sheriff for Mecklenburg County.
Sid was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. He was a member of the St. James Male Chorus and Ebenezer ARP Church for 65 years where he served as a Deacon.
Sid's humor and love for others will live in the memories of his family and friends forever.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Mary Putt, Dale Thompson and Bunny Watford for their dedicated and compassionate care of Sid.
In addition to his wife, Betty, Mr. Washam is survived by his son, Frank Washam and his wife, Sue of Gastonia, NC; his daughter, Karen Warren and her husband, Bobby of Newton, NC; four grandchildren, Stephanie Bryant and her husband, Jim, Leslie Cuthbert and her husband, David, James O. Warren III and his wife, Kristi, and Heather Warren; and three great-grandchildren, James Bryant, Luke Cuthbert and Charlotte Cuthbert.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday afternoon, November 7, 2007 in the Hankins & Whittington Chapel, 1111 East Blvd. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
