Martha Washburn m. James Carter

Searching for parents for both Martha Washburn and James C. Carter. Family lore has Mary hailing from Maine (no evidence to support thus far; in fact, census states she was born in CT). They died in 1870 in their 40s from injuries sustained in a train wreck (perhaps Sussex RR, Jan 28, 1870). An obituary from New Canaan, CT states Martha, widow of James C. Carter, was buried in Sing Sing, NY. Children left behind were Philip Watters Carter, James William Carter and Joseph Warren Carter. Anyone familiar with this Washburn family?

My Grandmother died while my Mother was very small and there is no info. On her accept her parents name, but I have a few things on the washburn side,my grandfathers side, to at least try to get something more. Here is what I have.

George Washburn married a woman named Pearl Tyler and they had a sons named Otto, Bill (or William), and there is one named Otis, or otte, something of the sort so we are told.William was married to a woman named Glenna or Glennie.

Somewhere in the family are the following names I am not sure where they fit.

Captola Washburn, Ruth Washburn, and Florella Washburn.

After Dorothy's death Otto remarried my step grandmother who went by her middle name of Ethel. I am unsure of her first name. I know it isn't much, but if anyone can help me to answer some of my Mothers questions I would be SO greatful!

NY Washburn/Cole 1856

I am researching my gg grandfather, Claron Cole, born about 1856. I have no exact dates but know that he was born in Hinsdale, NY, the son of Henry J. and Lavina Washburn Cole. Claron had a brother, Charles who served in the Civil War, he was in a prson camp but survived. Charles married Mary Hooper and had two daughter, Louise and Ethel. Claron also had three sisters, Mary Jane, Florence who married Henry Redding, and Cara who married John Hamilton. Claron married Ellen Sawyer, born in Australia to James and Ellen Sawyer of London, England. Ellen had a sister, Lillian who married a man named Colby and lived in Philadelphia, Pa. She also had a brother Albert Sawyer, who lived in Olean, NY and married Cara Arnold. Albert had a son James and daughter, Lena who married Earl Johnson. James and Lena had three children, Albert, Robert, and Eva. Ellen had a son Victor from another marriage who lived with his grandparents on East Hill near franklinville, NY. He attended Syrcause University and became a Methodist minister and served many years at Quincy, MA. This all the infomration I have other than my own direct line. Claron and Ellen had six children, my great-grandmother, Cecil Cole Rork, Pearl Cole Maloney, Leo, Claude, Nellie Cole Everetts, and Charles. Their first child, Crystal died at age 9. Hope to find a connection to this family.

Ebenezer Washburn b 1756 Attleboro, MA d. 1826 Ontario Document

I have a copy of letter written by Ebenezer Washburn. It begins:

"Hallowell, 3 Jany 1818

Dear Sir ( at bottom it says addressed to Major Young)

I write you this mainly to apologize for not having it in my power to pay your son the money we owe you when called on me for it some time ago...."

I have this document scanned and would be happy to send it to any of his descendants. I found it among the Henry Young papers in the Ontario Archives. The Major Young referred to is either Henry Young 1737-1821, a pioneer of Prince Edward County, or his son Daniel Young. Both used the appellation Major at various times.

I am not a Washburn descendant.

Doug Norman

John W WASHBURN mar Cape GirardeauMO 1864 Louisa Jane MADDEN

Who is this couple? Any clues will be much appreciated. I'm hoping they are the parents in 1864-1865 of my great grandfather Robert E. WASHBURN. His mother was Louisa ? b about 1840-44. I've been researching this line for the past 5+ years and have not broken through the brickwall of finding his father.

Perhaps John W. WASHBURN and Louisa Jane MADDEN are the lucky couple who gave birth to the talented boy that grew up to become a composer and music teacher who played and taught many instruments, including the piano and violin in St Louis ..until his 1910 death there. His firstborn son in St Louis (by 2nd wife) was my grandfather Robert E.L. WASHBURN, then he had a daughter Mary E., then another son he named John Lewis WASHBURN.

Robert E. WASHBURN (Sr) was born in Springfield, Greene Co MO and found there 1870 age 5 with mother Louisa in the Martha KING household; married there 1885 to Anna MOORMAN (also shown wrongly as MERMAN) and divorced Anna 1888 in Springfield MO; by 1889-90 he was in ST Louis MO and married Dec 24 1896 to 2nd wife Mary Elizabeth CAVANAUGH. His mother Louisa was living in the same residence with the still single Robert WASHBURN in the 1889-90 St Louis City Directory ...shown as Louisa DAVIDSON, widow of Samuel. But I find no marriage record for that marriage ...perhaps she had other marriages after WASHBURN.

This marriage for John W. WASHBURN and Louisa Jane MADDEN was found at Ancestry's Missouri Marriage Records 1805-2002 which has images from the original record books. They are identified as being 'from Illinois" and married in Cape Girardeau Missouri July 7, 1864, registered / filed in September 1864.

I wonder if John W. WASHBURN and Louisa Jane MADDEN really were from Illinois ...or were residents of IL that were from perhaps KY or even from MO.

I've been searching the various census..1850 and 1860.. and the Genweb for possibilities and the possibilities are all over the map from VA to KY to PA to MO and so on.

Any information about this couple?

Audrey in East TN

Does Washburn (John, etc.) really go back to Charles Martel (savior of Europe)?

Is there any books documented on this ... I put together a massive Gedcom from Thankful Washburn (daughter of Silence Washburn and Jesse Washburn) to Charles Martel (savior of Europe) ... and even before that.

Silence Washburn is a descendent of John Washburn/Washbourne ... Jesse Washburn line follows another path which I haven't worked on yet ... which may connect back into somehow ... and yes ... the maiden name of Silence was Washburn (same surname as her husband) ...
Silence was the daughter of Josiah Washburn and Sarah Richmond. Josiah had at least one other wife (didn't track those paths).

Luther J. Washburn, 12/24/1827, Ohio> Iowa

CAPT. LUTHER J. WASHBURN, of Brighton, is one of the prominent citizens of Washington County. He is a native of Portage County, Ohio, where he was born Dec. 24, 1827, and is the son of Cyrus and Eliza (Hart) Washburn, natives of Connecticut, the former born in 1797, and the latter Dec. 15, 1806. Cyrus Washburn went with his parents to New York State, and at the breaking out of the War of 1812, enlisted. He afterward went to Trumbull County, Ohio. Eliza Hart, when six years of age, removed with her parents to Trumbull County, Ohio, where they were among the early settlers. Here she became acquainted with the father of our subject, and they were united in marriage Sept. 15, 1820.

When a boy Cyrus Washburn was apprenticed to the tailor's trade, which he learned, and which occupation he followed for several years, until the failing of his health. In 1836 he left Ohio, looking for a location. He first went to Indiana, then to Chicago, which was then a village, and from there to Wisconsin. In 1837 he came to Brighton, where he made a claim, to which his family came the the following spring. At that time there were 300 Indian lodges there. His first winter was spent in a little log cabin 10x12, engaged in splitting rails to fence a coop. The Indians were generally peaceable. They were the first family to settle in Brighton. They were the parents of two children: Albemarle, a resident of York, Neb., and L. J., the subject of this sketch.

Mr. and Mrs. Washburn were members of the Congregational Church for many years, and were highly respected by the community in which they resided. In politics he was an old-line Whig, a great admirer of Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and the Adamses. At the organization of the Republican party he adopted its principles, and remained a member of it until his death, which occurred Dec. 30, 1881. Mrs. Washburn died Oct. 6, 1886. They lived together as man and wife for fifty-six years.

The subject of this sketch, Capt. L. J. Washburn, was educated in Trumbull County, Ohio, and Washington County, Iowa, having come to this county with his parents when ten years of age. Here he assisted in opening up a farm. He was married, Nov. 20, 1849, to Miss Julia A. Brier, a native of Ohio, born June 14, 1830, and daughter of John Brier, one of the early settlers of this county. By this union there are two living children: Charles H., of this county, born June 13, 1854, and George W., Sept. 11, 1858, now residing in Nebraska.

On the 12th of August, 1861, Mr. Washburn enlisted in Co. A, 2d Iowa Vol. Cab., and was mustered into the service at Davenport. He enlisted as a private, was promoted Corporal, and then Sergeant. In the winter of 1863-64 he was discharged from the service and raised a company which became one of the 7th Heavy ARtillery, receiving a commission as Captain in March, 1864, and served as such until Sept. 8, 1865, when he was mustered out at Memphis, Tenn. On receiving his discharge he returned home to Brighton, where he has since been engaged in business. Mr. and Mrs. Washburn are members of the Congregational Church. He is a member of the G.A.R., and in politics is a Republican

Portratit and Biographical Album of Washington County Iowa
1887
pages 439-440
Alvan H. Washburn of Cleveland, Ohio in 1876

Reverend Alvan H. Washburn, age 50, (married) of Cleveland, Ohio is listed among the dead in a train accident.

The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Train No. 5, The Pacific Express left a snowy Erie, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of December 29, 1876. As The Pacific Express plowed through the snow and crossed a bridge over the Ashtabula River, about 100 yards from the railroad station at Ashtabula, Ohio, the passengers heard a terrible cracking sound. In just seconds, the bridge fractured and the train plunged 70 feet into a watery abyss.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Ashtabula Bridge Disaster." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce
http://home.alltel.net/arhf/bridge.htm

Lydia WASHBURN & father Samuel WASHBURN

Lydia WASHBURN died 02 Oct 1902 in Holland, Orleans, Vermont. The death register gave her parents names as Samuel WASHBURN and Mary (no surname provided for Mary). Lydia's birthplace was not listed in the register, nor was her burial place. Lydia married Charles BENNETT in Holland in 1847, and there is little info: no ages, no parent names, no birth places. Using the census, I believe I'm tracking the correct WASHBURNs:

1850 Holland, Orleans, Vermont:

Saml Washburn, 52, laborer; Mary, 37; Mary Yates [her daughter Mercy's death record gives parent names as Mary WASHBURN & Stephen YATES], 19; Stephen Yates, 31; William Yates, 8m; John [there is a ditto mark after each of the following names but I think this should be Washburn not Yates], 16; David, 14; Olive, 11; Charlott, 10; George, 8; Hannah, 6; Diana, 3. Birthplace for entire family was VT.
and...
Charles Bennett Jr, 23, b. Eng, married within the year; Lydia Bennett, 19, b. VT, married within the year; Charlott Washburn, 9, b. VT.
Note: entry immediately following Charles' is for John WASHBURN & his family, then for Charles Bennett who may be Charles Jr's father.

1860 Holland, Orleans, Vermont:

Widow Saml Washburn, 46, b. NH; George, 17, b. VT; Hannah, 14, b. VT; Diana, 12, b. VT; Harman, 10, b. Canada; Norman, 4, b. Canada.

Charles Bennett, 33, b. Eng; Lydia A., 28, b. VT [and all the children b. VT as well]; Adelade, 9; Simon, 7; Samuel O., 6; Elizabeth A., 4; Calvin C., 2.

1870 West Charleston, Holland, Orleans, Vermont:

can't find Mary/Widow Saml Washburn.

Charles Bennett, 41, farmer, b. Eng; Lydia A., 37, b. Canada; Adalade, 18; Simon, 16; Oscar, 14; Alice, 12; Calvin, 10; Charles Jr, 4; Howard, 3.

1880 Holland, Orleans, Vermont:

Charles Bennett, 51, farmer, b. Eng; Lydia A, 58, b. PQ/P2?; Charles, 15, b. VT; Howard, 13, b. VT.

1900 Holland, Orleans, Vermont:

Charles Bennett, 71, b. Eng/Eng/Eng; Lydia, 67, b. Canada Am City Eng/VT/VT.

1910 Holland, Orleans, Vermont:

Charles Bennett, 85, b. Eng/Eng/Eng is widowed and residing with his son's family.

Lydia's death record fits with the above, and I have her husband's as well. Does anyone connect with this WASHBURN line of Lydia and her father Samuel? I don't know when/where he died, same for his wife, and I'd like to keep going back.

Hutchins WASHBURN; b. 1770; MA>NY>MI,USA

Localities: Plymouth Co., MA; Bristol Co., MA; Madison Co., NY; Genesee Co., NY; Lapeer Co., MI.

Seeking ancestry of Hutchins WASHBURN and the names of the children in his second family.

Hutchins WASHBURN; born c1770; married Sarah (Sally) JONES, c1795 daughter of Benjamin JONES and Susanna BAKER; Hutchins married second unknown (--?--) c1815.

Circumstantial evidence seems to indicate that the ancestors of Hutchins WASHBURN came from Bridgewater, Massachusetts. In the vital records of Bridgewater, we have the marriage intentions of Henry WASHBURN and Susanna HUTCHINS of Middleborough, Massachusetts on 11 August 1768.

This fits in with the birth date of Hutchins which is circa 1770. It seems very possible that they named their first son Hutchins WASHBURN, but this is only conjecture. Can anyone confirm these are Hutchins parents?

Lodema WASHBURN, the granddaughter of Hutchins and daughter of Lewis WASHBURN, wrote that Lewis was born in Taunton, Massachusetts. Taunton is in Bristol County, adjacent to Plymouth County. Taunton lies on the border of Bristol County, directly opposite Bridgewater.

According to Aunt Lodema, Hutchins WASHBURN married twice, first wife being named JONES. She wrote he took up land forty miles from Buffalo, New York.

The marriage to JONES has been confirmed. The names of the children from the first marriage have been determined. Purchase of land forty miles from Buffalo has been confirmed. What is the name of the second wife; when and where were they married; and what are the names of their children?

The U.S. Census record supports the two family scenario.

In 1800, Bristol County, Massachusetts, page 366, a Hutchins Washburn of the right age is shown with three males born between 1790 and 1800 (Henry, Lewis and Jones) and a female born between 1755-1775 (wife Sally).

Hutchins Washburn can not be found near Buffalo in the 1810 census, but some distance away in New York, Madison county, Smithfield, page 303, we have one H. Washburn; two males age 0-9 (Noah and George); one male 10-15 (Jones); two males 16-25 (Henry and Lewis); one male 26-44 (Hutchins); one male over 45 (Benjamin Jones, father of Sally); two females 0-9 (Sally and Harriet); one female 26-44 (wife Sally); one female over 45 (Susanna Jones, mother of Sally). The Jones family manuscript assumes the parents of Sally lived with Hutchins after a series of land transfers to Hutchins from Benjamin Jones.

1820 Census, New York, Genesee county, Alexander, page 7, Hutchins Washburn is shown with a younger wife. A son and daughter are shown as born between 1805 and 1810 (these two would be from the first marriage, probably George and Harriet). Also in the 1820 census are three children, probably from the second marriage, two boys and one girl born after 1810 but probably between 1815 and 1820, as supported by the 1830 census.

In 1830, Alexander, Genesee County, New York, page 89, a Hutchins Washburn of the right age is shown with four sons and one daughter (born between 1815 and 1825) and a wife (born between 1780 and 1790).

It appears he migrated to Michigan. In the 1840 census, Michigan, Lapeer county, Bristol, page 26, where we find Hutchins (70-79), one male (5-9), two males (15-19) and one female (50-69).

This last move is supported by land entries where Hutchins Washburn took title to land in Almont Township, Lapeer county, Michigan, 27 October 1836 (History of Lapeer county, p. 33).

It should be noted here that in 1846, the name of Bristol township was changed to Almont township (Pioneer families and history of Lapeer county, p. 18).

In 1805, Hutchens WASHBURN purchased land from the Holland Land Company at Attica, New York (History of Wyoming County, NY [New York : F.W. Beers & Co., 1880] page 126).

Children of Hutchins WASHBURN and Sarah (Sally) JONES were as follows:

i. Henry WASHBURN; b. 28 Oct 1792

ii. Lewis WASHBURN; b. 2 Aug 1796 at Taunton, Bristol county, Massachusetts; m.
OLD CABINET CARD FOUND IN TX WITH WASHBURN CONNECTION
I have rescued two old cabinet card photos of a young woman named Gertrude Crowell of Dayton NY. These photos probably taken 1900-1915. Gertrude appears to be 20-30 years of age. One photo was taken by English (Photographers) of Dayton, NY. The other photo has no location imprinted on the card. However, the name of Gertrude Crowell is on the back side of the card of each photo.

I believe Gertrude was the daughter of Melvin Crowell and Rose WASHBURN. This Gertrude was b. 1889 & d. 1965. Gertrude married George Morris..

I try to save old identified photos when I find them and return them to their family. I do not have scanning ability. If Gertrude is your family, or you are interested in these photos, please contact me privately at e-mail address below.

Thank you, Judy in TX (jmje36@aol.com)
GEORGE, RACHEL, CHARLES WASHBURN

Looking for any information on a GEORGE WASHBURN (b: abt 1829, New York, parents unknown but both from CT). Have him on the 1860 Census with RACHEL and CHARLES in Placer County, California and possibly later (1870-1880) in Nevada. George could have possibly been linked to a MARGARET MORAN at some point (perhaps his first wife). Rachel is from Ohio (b: abt 1822, father from Ohio, mother from Kentucky) could be George's wife or sister-in-law, Margaret was possibly from Kentucky (b: unknown) and Charles (b: Dec 1853, Utah) was his son or possibly stepson (in his youth Charles goes by the last name WASHBURN and later in life by the last name PARKER). Any information on any of the individials listed especially information linking them together would be greatly appreciated.

Eley/John/Thompson Comer Washburn, Patrick County, Virginia DNA

Dear all:

We need more participants in the Washburn family DNA project.

Specifically, we need contributors who claim descent from the Patrick Co., VA, family (who descend from the Culpeper group) because at least one participant from that line (namely, my husband!) did not match any Washburns at all (except his brother!) but did match WHITLOCK.

If we have contributors from this line who descend from other known brothers/uncles/cousins of the line from John Washburn or his father, Eley Washburn, that will help everyone! My husband descends from Thompson Comer Washburn. There were Whitlocks in Patrick Co. at the same time as the early Washburns. We are thinking the connection came with John or earlier but only DNA testing will elucidate and suggest a probable generation where the connection occurred.

It would also help determine if the Washburns of Rockingham Co., NC and Guilford Co., NC are related to the Virginia group. So far there have not been enough contributions from Southern (esp. VA and NC) Washburns to make any sense out of the results! Obviously, my husband doesn't match the descendants of Joseph Washburn (R'ham & Guilford) but others from up and down the Patrick Co. group might.

If you have not already participated, please go to http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Washburn/ and on the left hand side bar, click on "Request to join this group," scroll down and click on "I want to purchase a test." Please try to do at least 25 markers, more is MUCH better!

Many grateful thanks in advance,
Anne Burton Washburn
I've seemed to have a gap in my tree. Looking for Stephen Washburn who married Phebe Whitson. They had a daughter - Harriet born November 26, 1819; died March 31, 1895; and married June 12, 1850 to William D. Vredenburgh. I think Stephen's Grandparents might be Richard Washburn (son of Hannah Hallett and John Washburn) born June 27, 1730, married 1748 to Amy Birdsall (born March 4, 1723; died October 16, 1812)
Hope to hear from someone on this branch of the tree.

Hi there. I too am descended from Washburn's of New York. My ggg grandfather was Bethuel Washburn and his wife Eunice (Gifford) Washburn of Mannsville, Jefferson County, NY. Their son James Washburn was my gg grandfather. James was born in Ellisburg, NY in 1827. He had several brothers that lived in Adams, Herkimer County, NY. James and his brother Lyman pioneered to Wisconsin in the 1840's. Let me know if this matches. I have a lot of information on the family.

Marc Chambers

Diane Rice,
I did find some information in your posting of Foxton Cemetery in Leeds Co. Ontario, Canada.
Entries 7, 8 and 9 are members of my Washburn line. Sarah (Sally) BEACH Washburn is my G G grandmother. Sarah died, Aug 24,1851, of complication of childbirth after giving birth to my great grandmother, Charlotte Washburn, born Aug 2,1851.
The dates I have in a family Bible for George Lonzo Washburn are different from what you have listed. I have him born Aug 26,1849 and died April 22,1851.

I thank you for posting the info
John Pauter
