Watchman Surname

The earliest history (1500 and 1600s) of our name originates in the Culross, Torryburn, Carnock and Dunfermline areas of Fife. The Watchman families were strongly tied to the coal mining up to the early 1900s. Any help on these family names would be appreciated. My direct linw traces back to James Watchman (b:?) and Bessie Spowart (b: 1695)who were married 22 April 1720 in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland.
Thank you for your time.

Hi, I am so excited, I am looking at Coulthards for my sons partner. They are Bennetts from New Zealand, and I have Sarah Ann Watchmans birth cert which can scan and send if necessary.
She has no father named on her birth cert, But as you know Mary Anne is her mother. I cannot give more info at the moment as I am in the Devon record office and do not have all relevant information to hand as we live in Cheshire a good way away, and I am supposedly looking for my family and thought to change the scene I would browse this site.
I would love to have any info post the arrival of Mary Ann, and John Coulthard in NZ. Please reply.
John is proving more of a problem as there are a few around the Durham area at that time, but I am persevering
Many Thanks
Pauline

Jim-Thank you for the information and has helped a lot. I believe the Sarah Watchman is my grandmother and eldest daughter of Mary Ann Watchman who came out on the Ruapehu.John Coulthards first wife died 1886(Tarmar Hird) in NZ.John and Mary had 7 girls(including Sarah) and one boy John .This only son was killed in a coal mine payroll robbery 1917 along with two others. My mother Stacie Johnsen-Mary Ann was her great grandmother-is 90 years old and still going ok-she remembers much of the family history and often talks of the Hartshornes,Watchman and Coulthard families. We always wondered how "gran" was born in England but am I correct in assuming Mary Ann was her mother before coming to NZ and marrying John Coulthard ?

It all gets a bit confusing and I am a bit of a novice at working out family details espeically with so many family members having the same christian name!

Only 2 weeks ago we had a visit from Reg Watchman who lives in Rotorua NZ-he is the youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Watchman and is doing a family research. He is 89 years old but pretty agile and alert.Thomas and Elizabeth Watchman ran a grocery shop in Taylorville and this business was destroyed by fire in 1909 and the two girls were lost in the fire despite her fathers efforts-the girls were Jane and Elizabeth. The family left to live in Wellington after the fire ,parents ,Thomas ,Robert and John with Reg being born in Wellington.

There was a newspaper article done on this fire by the Christchurch press on the 27/8/1996-this was the year a commenarative re-union for the Dobson mine explosion(Taylorville) where Elizabeth Watchmans husband(Pattinson) was killed. The Reg Watchman who visited us -his father was Thomas who was brother of Mary Ann.

Hope this makes some sort of sense for you-any details I could get on Sarah would be good- was she a child in 1887 ???

Regards from New Zealand(West Coast South Island).

Cheers Will J
