I am trying to find information on a Mary Waterman who is buried in the Old South Burying Ground on Maple Avenue in Hartford, CT. Her stone says that she died on 11 May 1818 at age 89, making her birth about 1729. Also in the same cemetery are Charles and Anna (Starr) Waterman, who are my 4G Grandparents. I am trying to find out Mary's relationship to them, if any, and if she could possibly be the mother of Charles, of whom I know nothing of his parentage. Genealogical books list him as a Hessian soldier who deserted to the Revolutionary cause. Anna was the daughter of Nathaniel and Ann (Rice) Starr of Middletown, CT. I would like to identify this "Mary's" maiden name, if, indeed her married name was Waterman. If Waterman was her given surname, I would like to know her parentage. Can anyone help to identify Mary or any information about her? Currently, there is a preservation committee working diligently to restore this historic cemetery, and they might enjoy knowledge of her also. They are also seeking photos of the Old South Burying Ground to authentically restore the grounds to its original condition. If anyone has photos of Hartford from around 1800 or slightly later, and they include the Old South Burying Ground, I would love to have copies and would provide them to the preservation commission.
