Abilene Reporter News
Abilene, Texas

Wednesday, August 17, 1938

Mrs. Watkins, 90, Succumbs
Mrs. SARAH ANN RICHARDSON WATKINS
Winters, Aug. 27: Funeral of Mrs. J. A. WATKINS, who was 90 years old last March 6, will be held at the family home in the Dale community near here at 10 o’clock Thursday morning. CLEO E. JONES, minister of the Winters Church of Christ, will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. C. H. COLE, pastor of the Winters Methodist Church. Burial will be in Main Street Cemetery here with SPILL Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Watkins died Tuesday morning at her home. She suffered a fractured hip when she fell last Saturday and this led to her death. Until thus injured, she had been in good health.

Mrs. Watkins was born in Nashville, Tennessee March 6, 1848. Her maiden name was SARAH ANN RICHARDSON. She was brought to Texas near Marshall when 9 years old. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. RICHARDSON, resided later in Hill County where she was married July 9, 1874 to J. A. WATKINS. They observed their 64th wedding anniversary last month. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins moved to Runnels County in 1900, settling west of Winters in what is now the Poe Chapel community. They later lived for brief periods in Tarrant County, near Ballinger and in the Valley Creek community southwest of Winters. In 1917, they established the present family home near Dale.

Survivors are the husband, three daughters, Mmes. ALBERT MAYO of Winters, ROSA ROGERS of Los Angeles, California, and HOWARD WILLIAMS of Winters; a son, J. MACK WATKINS of Winters, 17 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. One of Mr. and Mrs. Watkins died in infancy.
I'm looking for any information that somebody out there might have on a certain Watkins family line. The only name that I know for certain is my great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Watkins (1903-1988). Andrew Jackson was born in Harrison, Arkansas. I'm looking for his father and beyond. His father may or may not be named John Harrison Watkins. From what I've heard, there is a family tradition of naming the sons after American Presidents.

Does anybody have any information that could help me out?

Mistake about Mrs. Sterling Price Wadkins nee Collier

There are some mistakes in some online worldconnect gedcoms that involve my Wadkins/Watkins line. Two folks posted Mrs. Sterling Price Wadkins as the wife of my Sterling Price Wadkins, son of my Jesse Woods Wadkins and Susan McGehee Wadkins / Watkins. This is incorrect.

On the 1860 Texas census, there is the family of Ben Collier and his wife Elizabeth Sheffield Collier, both from Alabama with their older children and her sister in the household. By 1870 the family had added a couple of more children including a daughter Price whose full name was Sterling Price Collier. Later Price married Albert Wadkins and lived in Jones County where she died in 1944 in the hospital at Abilene, but buried near Anson, Jones County, where one offspring, James J. Watkins, gave information about her family. The death certificate is for Mrs. Sterling Price Wadkins.

The Collier family is listed in some worldconnect gedcoms, some with the mother as Elizabeth Sheffield, since this is the name on Price's death certificate, it should be Elizabeth's surname, besides Price's sister who married a Randle also has the same parents on her death certificate.

In a couple of worldconnect gedcoms, there are more Colliers, Sheffields, and some Wadkins / Watkins including the lines back to Virginia besides a couple who lived in Montague County, Texas. My interest is keeping track of the Watkins/Wadkins who moved around Texas, Oklahoma, and other states and eliminating mistakes with anyone who claims a connection with my line.

I’d like to hear from anyone researching the Watkins family who has found Hopkins Watkins as a name, or any Watkins members who have married McDaniels. This Hopkins W. Watkins – if that is his actual given name – was born in 1810 in Kentucky, was living in Oldham Co., Ky. in the 1830, and died in Scotland Co. Mo. in 1869. Despite the unusual name, he’s been a dead end for me for years.

Jack Watkins

I am looking for Jack Watkins about the age of 65 to 75 years old that lived in the State of California in the 1960's. He was once a radio operator for the Air Force at a Air Force base just outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico. This base has been closed since the late 1960's. This is a long lost family member that has just recently been revealed as a distant relative.

Robert and Mary Watkins - Liverpool??

I am from Newfoundland, Canada and researching my family history beginning with my father’s side (ie. the Watkins side) but I seem to have come up against a brick wall. The farthest I can get in my family tree is a Robert and Mary Watkins who were likely born in the late 1700s, early 1800s. I read on the message board that Robert and Mary immigrated to Newfoundland from Liverpool, England.

Their known children according to Parish records were Abel, Hester, and Hugh Francis. Abel was baptized in Twillingate, Newfoundland in Nov 1820, Hester in Mar 1823, and Hugh Francis in May 1823. Due to the fact that only 3 children were listed in the Parish records, I suspect that Robert and Mary may have come to Newfoundland between 1815 and 1820 with other children who were likely born in England.

This is all I have to go on right now, so if anyone could tell me anything else about Robert and Mary or has any other helpful hints I would appreciate it so much. Thanks!
She goes from here to Salado, Texas.
Our sheriff yesterday put into the county jail a woman who goes by the name of JOHANNA BATTE. She is under indictment for being implicated with a man named JOHN PERKINS for murdering her first husband, whose name was WATKINS. It seems that she and Perkins ran off from one of the southern states together and that afterwards WATKINS found them in San Saba County when they shot him (WATKINS). Both Perkins and his wife were arrested on a summons but owing to the accusation not being sustained by the evidence, they were released. Soon after her release, Mrs. Watkins ran away from Perkins with a party named BATTE. JOHN PERKINS did not relish being treated in that manner so he made complaint and the grand jury found a true bill against Perkins and Mrs. Watkins. They could not catch the woman, but Perkins was arrested and was afterwards, about one year ago, released on bail and up to this time has not had a trial. This woman was arrested a short while ago in Longview, Texas, and brought back to San Saba, but on account of the jail there being insecure, she was placed in our county jail for sake keeping. She is not in good health and from appearance not over 30 years of age.
The wife of FRANK DENISON, who was foreman of the Lampasas Dispatch office, died yesterday and was followed to the grave by a large number of people.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas

January 21, 1893
Mortuary
Marshall, Texas, Jan. 18: Mrs. HEATH died last night.
Blossom, Lamar Co., Texas, Jan. 19: JOHN SKIDMORE died yesterday morning.
Denison, Texas, Jan. 20: B. L. WATKINS died last night.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas
March 9, 1893
Drowned in Red River
Texarkana, Ark., March 8: While GEORGE WATKINS, his son JOSEPH and B. S. SKINNER were in a boat fishing in the Red River at the crossing of the Texarkana and Fort Smith railroad, 12 miles north of here, yesterday afternoon, the boat capsized and the two former drowned. It seems that the boy Joseph first fell overboard, and his father attempted to rescue him and the two went down together. Skinner, who could not swim, saved himself by clinging to the side of the boat. The bodies have not been recovered. All three lived at Ogden 20 miles north of here.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas
December 2, 1893
Family Poisoned
Bells, Grayson County, Texas, Nov. 30: The families of GEORGE WATKINS and A. BRICE were poisoned last night by eat head cheese. All are out of danger this morning.

1893 Ennis W. Watkins

Ennis W. Watkins, age 63, illiterate, born ?, living in Thackerville, Chickasaw Nation, in 1893.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas
July 29, 1893
The Akers Case
Gainesville, Texas, July 28: The examining trial of G. W. AKERS, charged with swindling by representing himself to be a solicitor for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation, was begun before Judge HILL this afternoon. The courtroom was filled with spectators, a great many of whom were clients of Akers who had been paid $20 to prosecute their claims. Three of the complaints against Akers were quashed and he was placed on trial for swindling ENNIS W. WATKINS of Thackerville, Indian Territory by fraud and false representation s out of $20. Mr. WATKINS was kept on the stand all afternoon and it is not likely that the examining trial will be finished tomorrow. W. H. MAYES, brother of the late Chief MAYES of the Cherokee Nation, and assistant executive secretary to Chief HARRIS, is here as a witness for the state to prove that Akers had no authority from the Cherokee government to solicit claims to citizenship. The trial is eliciting widespread interest and its probable result is the chief topic of discussion on the streets.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas
July 30, 1893
Indian Agency Racket
More of the trial of G. W. Akers… testimony by Mr. ENNIS W. WATKINS, the complaining witness, testified that he was 63 years old, wholly unable to read and write; that Akers represented himself to him that he was an authorized agent of the U. S. and the Cherokee government to solicit claims for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation and that he was liable to be ordered away from Gainesville at any time. He also testified that Akers showed him a book which Akers claimed was a copy of the official records of the census of North Carolina Cherokees and that in the book, he claimed were the names of his ancestors, PATSY and FRANCIS M. BASS. Witness said he told Akers that these persons were his aunts that that they had told him many years ago they had Cherokee blood in their veins… (later in the 1893, Akers was sentenced to 2 years in prison.)
How to find information

Hi,
I am trying to find any information I can about my great grandma. I know she was adopted. I believe she was adopted in the state of Missouri. I know her maiden name was Elizabeth Shelton, married name was Elizabeth Watkins. She was born around 1880 and died in the late 1930's or early 1940's.
I would like to know more information. Such as where/when she was adopted and where she originally came from, and who her birth parents were.
I have tried looking up both her maiden and married names and have not found much.
What sites/search techniques should I use to find more information about her?
I live in Missouri, which is where I believe her adoption took place and where she lived, but without knowing her adoptive parents names, the date of the adoption, or the location of the adoption, I am unsure of how I could even request information from the state.
Any suggestions?

Few items about different Jesse Watkins

Not related to any, but some folks might find something useful.

Lawton Constitution
Lawton, Oklahoma
February 17, 1957

Octogenarian Keeps Hands Busy by BILL COOK (staff writer)
One Lawton octogenarian, in an effort to dissipate idle hands, began a project in November 1955, which today not only brings a great satisfaction in creativity but also serves as a source of income.

Rug plaiting was the answer to prayers for 84 year old JESSE CLARENCE WATKINS of 915 Roosevelt. “I’d always been a great one for reading, but when my eyes began to go bad on me, I had to do something,” Watkins said in relating how he began to weave throw rugs. “To be idle is the worst that can befall man—it just gets me,” he said. Watkins, confined to his small room because of a leg infliction, said “as long I can keep my hands doing something constructive, I’m happy.”

A retired Methodist minister, Watkins this week completed his 100th rug. “They always sell—I’ve only got a few on hand now,” he said. Watkins sells the rugs, made of scrap rags for $1.50 each. The rags are cut into long narrow strips and are plaited together. The plaits are sewn together to form 24 by 36 inch rug.

Watkins attributes his longevity to “plenty of baths to cleanse the pores of the skin, correct eating habits and right living.” “Too many dig their graves with their teeth,” Watkins said in referring to the poor eating habits of Americans today. “I may not get around too fast—not eat until 3 p.m. but when I do set down to the table, I eat the right foods and chew them slowly,” he said. “I never had much of a chance to be bad—I was converted at the age of 14,” the retired minister laughed.

Born near Marietta, Ohio, Watkins moved to Cunningham, Kansas with his family when only six years old. When 21 years of age, Jesse made the run on the Cherokee Strip, Sept. 16, 1893 and obtained a select farm. Costing only $17.50 the farm today is valued at $55,000, although he sold it years ago, Watkins said. While farming his land near Cherokee, Oklahoma, Watkins married and “surrendered to the call to preach.”

At the age of 25, the Watkins sold their farm, moved back to Kansas and he became a full time circuit rider. “My wife’s father was the good friend of a certain Kansas elder who knew of an opening out at Apache (the Apache Circuit of the Methodist Church), and I was appointed to fill the position,” Watkins said.

Watkins later served as circuit rider and minister of churches in Woodward, Oklahoma and San Angelo, Texas before coming to the Lawton Methodist Episcopal Circuit. At the age of 60, Watkins retired on a farm east of Lawton near Cox’s store. Mrs. Watkins died here in 1950.

Watkins beamed as he related that two sons and a grandson, who are ministers, make the fourth and fifth generation in his family to follow the evangelistic field. RALPH WATKINS is a Methodist minister at Otis, Kansas and ELMER WATKINS is an Assembly of God minister at Enid. Other sons include MERL WATKINS of Wichita, Kansas, JOYCE WATKINS of Dayton, Ohio, PAUL WATKINS of 913 Roosevelt, and a daughter Mrs. ED SMITH of 915 Roosevelt.

Lawton Constitution
Lawton, Oklahoma
December 31, 1971
Rev. JESSE WATKINS
Rev. JESSE C. WATKINS, 99, longtime Lawton resident, died today in a local nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Becker Funeral Home.

He was born May 1, 1872 in Ohio. He moved to Kansas with his parents at age of three. At the age of 21 he made the Cherokee Strip run in 1893 and homesteaded on a farm near Ingersoll where he farmed until 1902. He married the former Miss MARY A. MILLSAP on Jan. 8, 1896 in Cunningham, Kansas. She died Jan. 14, 1950. Rev. Watkins entered the ministry in 1902 and served as an early day circuit rider minister. For 30 years he served as a Methodist minister and for the past 44 years, he has been a minister in the Assembly of God churches.
