The marriage registration for John Watt and Ann Jane Mann, dated March 17, 1841 at St. Michael's Church, Liverpool, lists each father, Robert Watt and John Mann, as "Master Marine". Does anyone know if this "designation' was given only to the Royal Marines, or was it in common use in the merchant fleet as well? Any help that anyone can give me with this would be greatly appreciated, as this is almost the only information I have on my Watt or Mann ancestors.
