Hi Valerie,
Again thank you so much. I am 52 and my mother always said you are as young as you feel and she was always a vivacious, active woman until a few years ago. I am going to see her this morning and I will read and tell her what you discovered. Although her language has deteriorated and her understanding of what I say she picks up on the old memories some and it helps. We have a special connection and even though she does not always remember my name she knows who I am.
I hope I will be able to keep in touch with you as I am not a member of the website you are on. I would like to tell you if and when we find out about the Cherokee connection.
Scarlet

Scarlet -

Your mother sounds like a wonderful person. My father is 84 and my mother is 76 and, although their minds are sharp, watching them suffer with declining health and abilities is very sad. I will be 50 this week and feel like I'm running head on toward a brick wall sometimes!

You should try to search for some of your mother's cousins....children or grandchildren of Felix, Maggie, Baxter, Walter or Alfred. Do you know any of them? They may have done more research. I do think it is interesting that Margaret Watts was alone with her one son Asbury back in the 1860 Census when he was only 12. It is a bit unusual to have only one child AND be a single parent back in that day. Most of the women I ran into whose husband's died back then, all remarried very soon and had more children. Maybe she was the Cherokee or Asbury's father was and she didn't remarry due to having a "Cherokee child"

BUT...also, please remember that when you start researching genealogy you ALWAYS hear people who say they have "Indian" blood....it is family folklore and no one ever knows where it started and many times no one can find any Native American in their background. In my family it was "we are related to Daniel Boone" ... another one of those folklore stories.

I'm very glad this information brought you such happiness and I wish you and your family the best and I wish your mom some good days with her memory. Tell her these stories and it may take her somewhere in her mind that gives her some joy---whether she is able to express it to you or not!

Best,
Valerie in Kansas

Hi Valerie,
You don't know how grateful I am to read what you found out about Harvey Watts. It brought tears to my eyes to confirm about the floral business, my mother had talked about it. But she did not tell me it was a family business. Her grandparents were probably not alive when her Dad worked at the floral business. Later her Dad was hit by a street car I think and could not work. He got some kind of settlement for it, I think. My mothers Dad died when my mother was a 18 and her own mother was an invalid and she had to take care of her. She had severe rheumatoid arthritis that was crippling her. Besides the teenage years my mother talked about a happy childhood her Dad called her his little fiddle and she slept between the two of them. Being an only child she was sometimes lonely on the farm. She made up for that by naming all of the chickens and they followed her around. Her Mom during the depression made a big pot of stew and fed other people; people were starving. But her Mom besides having a kind heart also was a very strong woman. She had a rifle and knew how to use it to protect her family and home when robbers came.
Her Dad told her he was Cherokee and I think it was kind of a secret story, maybe cause of prejudice? My Mother looks like she has a lot of Indian blood in her and looks nothing like her mother who was French.
All of this is especially important to me now as my Mom is in the final stages of alzheimers and cannot tell me anymore stories.
So I want to thank you and say God bless you and keep you for what you did to help me and my sisters.
Scarlet

Re: WATT Family Reunion

Well - Interesting There IS that other Harvey with the daughter Virginia born about the same years as yours but in NY. In the 1920 and 1930 Census, I did not see your Harvey. I also searched for H. H. and for Hubert and for WATT instead of WATTS. Also searched for Virginia and for Lucy, but didn't find them.

BUT - in 1910 you are in LUCK! I found Harvey H. Watts age 24 and wife Lucy age 22 in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA. Says they have been married 3 years and she is mother of 1 with 0 living, so they had a child that did not survive by 1910. He is a florist at a nursery AND they are living next to Asbury B. WATTS age 62 and wife Emily L. age 61. Says they have been married 38 years in 1910 and Emily is mother of 6, with 5 living. I would assume, again you need to prove, that Asbury and Emily are parents of Harvey H. Asbury is also listed as a florist at a nursery and he and wife both born in Georgia and they both list all parents as being born in Georgia. Right there with them also is an Alfred A. Watts age 26 and his wife Francis E. age 26 and their child Annie L. age 2 - Alfred is listed as a salesman at a nursery; then there is Walter O. Watts age 28 and his wife Mary E. age 23 and their 2 kids Emma C. 2 and Leroy G. 1 and Walter is listed as a florist at a nursery.

So I would assume they had a family nursery business and Alfred, Walter and Harvey are the children of Asbury and Emily. By the way, they are listed in District 64, Atlanta Ward 3, Fulton Co., GA Roll T624_191; Page: 1B; Enumeration District: 64; Image: 387.

I then looked at 1900 and found Asbury and wife Emily in the South Bend District, Fulton Co., GA listed as farmers with 3 kids Walter O., Alfred A., Harvey H....Asbury was born Sept 1847, Emily June 1848, Walter Aug 1880, Alfred March 1883, Harvey Jan 1886. Again all list themselves and their parents as born in GA. And Emily states mother of 6, 5 living. So I would assume the other 2 that are not living there are older, meaning Harvey is the youngest.

Then you have to skip all the way back from the 1900 census to the 1880 census and I find Asbury listed as BERRY WATTS age 33 and wife Emily age 32 - neither can read or write, with children Felix age 7, Maggie age 5 and Baxter age 2. So there are the 3 other children of the 6 that Emily reports to have had in the other censuses. One of these three must have died by 1900 and the other 2 were out of the house. All born in GA. They were in District 645, Enumeration District 38, Coweta County, GA.

Can't find him in 1870 when searching for him or Emily. They probably WEREN'T married yet since in 1880 their child is only 7 so they probably got married 1-2 years prior to his birth, which would be 1882 or so.

In the 1860 Census in Atlanta Ward 2, Fulton Co., GA there is a Margaret Watts age 39 (either widowed, divorced or single as there is no male listed in her household) with ONE child spelled ASBERRY WATTS age 12 both born in Georgia. She is listed as a seamstress. That is PROBABLY him as there is no other Asbury or Berry Watts in the area (except a couple of Berry Watts that are black)

Can't find Margaret or Berry, Asberry or Asbury in 1850 census. Searched for Watt and Watts. But this will at least give you a start! Good luck!

Valerie

Hi! I really appreciate your response, but I am confused. My grandfather was born 1-31-1887 in Atlanta Ga. He died 11-14 1942 in Atlanta Georgia in Grady hospital. He lived on 20 Fisher Rd in Fulton county. This is what is listed on a certificate of Death Georgia Dept. of Public Health. They list no record of his birthplace and no record of his parents maiden name or place of birth. He is listed on the same as married to Lucy Grist. As far as I know my mother was an only child (Virginia) as the other children died at birth or as babies. He was buried in the Hollywood cemetery in Atlanta Ga.
If you have anymore info, I really appreciate it.
Scarlet

Scarlet:

I found a Harvey Watts born in the 1930 Census in Nassau County, NY who was age 33 (born in 1897)who had been married 10 years at that time to Theresa who was age 29 so born about 1901. They had children Eleanor age 9 (born about 1921), Virginia 6 (born about 1924), John age 4 (born about 1926) and Harvey age 10 months so born about June of 1929 as the census was done in April 1930. All of these people show they were born in NY and both parents born in NY. Harvey is listed as a mechanic.

Interestingly, on the same page is listed William Watts age 63 born NY, and both parents born in NY and his wife Mamie who is 61 and born in NY with both parents born in Germany. William is listed as retired and married since age 21 so, married for 42 years, which means he married her in about 1888. I would assume, but you must check into it and prove, that William is possibly the father of Harvey, or possibly an uncle. Your Harvey is at 22 Belmont Ave and William is at 23 Belmont Ave. For 2 Watts to be living right across the street from each other they are most probably related in some way.

Well, if I could look it up, I would. However, the search engine I was using only has the Scranton Tribune from 1897 - 1902 - a fairly limited search. I am confident though that John's obituary is listed in the 1885 paper.

By the way, I was using the Library of Congress site here:

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84026355/issues/

Todd

This is some great information. Just to add a little bit more from the Watt-specific angle, Harriet's husband John Watt was born about 1809 in Scotland and died on June 14, 1885 in Carbondale, PA (Lackawanna County). He, Harriet and some of their family are listed in the 1880 census for Carbondale, along with his adult sons and their families (living in their own residences). There was also another Watt enumerated there in Carbondale in 1880, Andrew Watt (DOB abt 1816 in Scotland) and his wife Mary, also born in Scotland as well (no children still living with them). I'm wondering if this might possibly be a brother of John Watt?

What are the chances you could find John Watt's obituary in the same newspaper, the Scranton Tribune? Since he was apparently a successful local business owner, he could have a fairly detailed obit about his life as well. If you still have access to this old newspaper, he should be easy to find now with his established death date as June 14, 1885 in Carbondale. In any case, thanks again for finding and posting Harriet's very informative obit.

From what I can find, it appears that Alexander Boag's parents were William Boag (b. 1767, d. 5 Jan 1839 in Avondale) and Jean Morrison (b. 13 Apr 1766, d. 30 Mar 1848 in Avondale). Alexander's siblings were Isobel (b. 1790), Jean (b. 1792), and James (b. 1794).

Does this match your family?

Bob

I just replied to another query with the following message. Is it possible that the Alexander Watt born about 1849 (my guess, but 1842 may also be correct) be your Alexander? I do not have his wife's name. Check out some of the other names in the reply below to see if they fit.

"According to my records, Jean Boag was the daughter of Alexander Boag (b.1799, d.1864) and Jean Cleland (b. 1794, d. 1868). I do not have places for where they lived. I show a son Alexander born to Jean Boag and her husband William Watt in about 1849."

Hope this helps.

Bob

John Watt b. abt 1787 was born in Scotland. He married Jane Hutcheson. Their only son that I have information on was:

There is some proof that Alexander WATT (1804-1877)was also known as William WATT. The census of 1860 also reports that his wife was Jane but it may have been Jan or Janet. The last name may have been Hutchenson or Mc Hutchenson. Alexander may be the middle name of William. On legal papers, you will see Alexander WATT. He went by both names.

Source: Verdena VEELE and Earl WATT

Lived in McKesport, PA in Allegheny Co. in 1860 census

Alexander William Watt was an underground coal manager.

Alexander William WATT is probably buried next to Alexander Samuel Watt in the corner of a field on a farm in Dodge County, NE."

He had 11 children, some stayed in Scotland, some (3) went to Australia, and the rest came to the US. There was a son called John (1829-1903), a Janet, and a Jane. John had one son born in Illinois called William Watt (1856-1945).

I do not believe any of them lived in NY.

We have a match. I am a descendant of John Watt, a brother to Janet. There was another sister named Jane that went to Australia with siblings David and Isabel Elizabeth Watt.

I have the following note about Janet Crawford Watt. Born 1844, Scotland d. 1912, Married William Campbell (no information about him)

Immigrated to Newcastle, DE in 1856. She was living in Johnstown PA in 1857.

There is a story that Janet with riding with her husband John CUNNINGHAM in a buggy and John was killed by a sniper's bullet in 1869 in Kerney NE. Janet was pregnant with her third child at the time. She then married William CAMPBELL who was older then she. He was a good friend and neighbor. She and William went to Kearney NE in about 1893.

If you want to share more information contact me at
watte@tir.com I have a lot of information but very little on your line.

Why are there so many William Watts from Scotland? I have Alexander William Watt b. March 1803 married Jane Hutcheson. He signed his name as Alexander or William depending on the day. He had a son William Watt b. May 1833 in Scotland but died in Wisconsin. His son William was born in PA in 07 Jan 1857. Any connections here?
