I had been wondering how come there was these Wattenberg locations in Colorado . Now , I know , tks.
For a town founding father , background must be plenty ?
Incidentally , maybe you have the answer :
- how come there is also a Wattenberg area in Tyrol ? Is Wattenberg not basically a German name found all along the Weser ?
- how would you translate Wattenberg ? I know of two tentative versions ( the cottonwool one and the mouth of the river one ) .

Regards .

Well , it does not help right now . But later it might ,as I take for almost granted that the Polish Wattenberg , at a so far unknown date , came from Germany ;
To which century does you F von W belong ?

Hi there !
Seems , in many cases , our ancestors were not too keen to keep track . Too bad .
One of my Wattenberg uncles settled in the States just before WWII. His sons live in NY and Florida .
So far I do not go back any farther than my GGGfather and I only know his first name .I know his son , my GGfather was born in a little town East of Lodz and he is the one who moved to Tomaszow Mazowiecki .
Don't you have any smatterings of which part of poland your 're coming from ? Whether you 're Galiziene , Litvak or plain Polish ?

Regards .

Jacques Wattenberg
wattenberg@wfinanceconseil.fr

That's a very good question. I was always told that our Wattenberg branch - which lived in Brooklyn/Manhattan since before 1912 - was from "Poland", with very little information other than that. I am working on trying to find out more, based on immigration manifests.

According to German German Wattenbergs I spoke to , the name belongs to the Weser valley in Germany (Bremen , Hanover ...).
Watten in old German is the area of the mouth of a river which is covered and uncovered by the tide .One German Wattenberg agreed with this ethymology .Other people believe Watten refers to cottonwool. As you know there is also a Wattenberg mountain area and ski resort in Austria .
I asked the German German Wattenbergs if they ever heard of non fully German Wattenbergs , Polish for instance : this got me a full NO NEVER .
As to me , a jewish Polish Wattenberg , just like you , I am wondering where/when/how the jewish branches originated.

Marria,
Thankyou for your reply. I have a great deal of information on the Wattenberg family as far as photos and paperwork. I just had some holes in the information that I needed to clear up to make sure that all was correct and made sense. You have helped by clearing up the one question of Fredrick Wattenbergs wife as her name is Steber. I have found that the original spelling of the family name is Stieber. I have a photo of Mary's brother "John Stieber" grave marker b. March 15, 1848 d. Nov. 22, 1914. I am also from Colorado and plan a trip to Brighton this Summer. I will e-mail you with more information and greater detail.

Be nice to find what links the families together. There's a huge amount of Wattenbergs out on the web, seems like. My dad was Albert, brother Josef and sister Manya. I think there was an older brother or uncle that committed suicide after WWII.

I would be interested in hearing if there's a genealogical fork where the Jewish branches split off from the origins of the name. My father's family is from Silesia, which I know was a region under contention during the 30 Years War.
