Hello, I have a shoebox of letters, found at an estate sale in Buffalo NY. They were going to throw them out, I thought I'd make an attempt to find someone who wanted them. They are mostly to Dorothy or Dot Watters or Leon. Leon is an ealier date, so I'm assuming it's her maiden name. Many are from the Fraize family. Possibly a connection. Most are from the 40s, with a few from the 30s.
Places mentioned on envelopes - Alabama, Texas, New York, Georgia.

But I would love to know the true oregin of these two last names. I have had a hard time finding the best site to do so.

WATTERS/WILLIAMS/ENG - US/1852-present

Joseph Henry WATTERS b. 182 in Beerferis, Devon, England, son of Isaac WATTERS and Bolina SLEEP. While I have additional information on father, Isaac, it is not documented. I do have a dc confirming they were Joseph Henry WATTERS's parents and were b Eng. Joseph Henry migrated to US and married Elizabeth WILLIAMS b 1857 in (according to family records) Iron Mountain, Canada. Joseph Henry and Elizabeth William WATTERS lived in Calumet, MI, where their children were born, and migrated to Birmingham, AL with 7 of their surviving 11 children.

Joseph Henry WATTERS's siblings (undocumented by me) were Mary Jane; John; William; Matilda; Ellen; Sampson James; Amelia S.;Isaac; Elizabeth Ann; Fannie George; Selina; and Bolina WATTERS. They were all born in either Beerferis, Devon or St. Ive, Cornwall between 1852 and 1871.

I have very complete, documented info on my line, Joseph Henry/Elizabeth WILLIAMS WATTERS from the time they migrated from Michigan to Alabama, but nothing on Elizabeth prior to that time and very little on Joseph Henry's siblings.

My family line was WATTERS until they came to America, then changed it to WALTERS. My 1st WALTERS was William, b. abt 1705 in Scotland and arrived in Va. abt 1743 with wife and children. Wife was Elizabeth Robertson and some of his children was ROBERT, THOMAS, and more. His father was Archibald WATTERS, but remained back in Scotland. His name shows up in later generations. Archibald`s father was also William Watters. Any one care to comment? These are the same family that went from Scotland,to Va, to Ga, Ala, Miss, and Texas arriving in Texas in 1835. Sincerely, MERKEL WALTERS of the Texas branch. His wife was Ann and family is found in Low Row 1841 census. First child of this couple was Simon Harker Watters. Only feasible marriage I can find evidence of in Grinton was the February 15, 1825 marriage indexed on IGI as James Wallers and Ann Harker. Review of a copy of the original recording shows that whereas name could be read as Wallers, the correct reading is Watters.

By all indications Ann did not come to America with James and family, and probably died between 1841 and 1849. The son Simon Harker Watters md Ann Rowe/Row/Raw----Rowe is spelling on family records---and they named their first child Ann which could be after Ann Harker's mother (although I believe her mother may have been Nancy Simpson) or possibly after Simon's mother who had recently deceased.

Anyone have any of these people in your data base?

Ken Kauffman
Seeking information on the following Watters / Waters and McGuigan families who moved from New Brunswick, Canada to Wisconsin by 1860.

The 1860 census of the town of Necedah, Juneau County shows them living in the same household:

Michael Waters, 26, born New Brunswick
Bridget Waters, 22, born New Brunswick
William Waters, 4 months, born Wisconsin

William Waters, 28, born New Brunswick
Mary Ann Waters, 26, born New Brunswick
Sarah Waters, 5, born New Brunswick
Mary Ann Waters, 3, born Illinois

John McGuigan, 57, born Ireland
Sarah McGuigan, 22, born New Brunswick
John McGuigan, 18, born New Brunswick
James McGuigan, 16, born New Brunswick
Peter McGuigan, 12, born New Brunswick
Michael McGuigan, 10, born New Brunswick

James Waters, 22, born New Brunswick

Some of them seem to have moved to Ashland, Ashland County, Wisconsin, by the 1880 census.

I believe James Waters later married Sarah McGuigan.

I'd like to know who the parents were of Michael, William and James Waters / Watters because I think they might have been the brothers of my 3rd-great-grandmother, Mary Jane (Watters) Colbert. Her parents came from Ireland in 1828 and settled in St. George, Charlotte County, New Brunswick.

I'd appreciate learning anything about these families.

Thank you for any help or information!

Dna Project and first result

A Watters/Waters Dna project has started, for details go to http://www.worldfamilies.net/w/waters/ , the first result is for a descendant of William Watters of Bushmills Co Antrim Ireland. the dna donor was my Mother's nephew , the result shows he belongs to haplotype I1a , this group was mentioned in the BBC series" Blood of the Vikings " as being prevalent in the NE of England and has its origin in Denmark and N Germany, a search of the Sorensen data base showed many non surname matches in Denmark. I cannot trace my Mother's family beyond 1800, a family story told that they had moved from Sligo origonally. my experience with Dna testing in my own Surname project has been very rewarding , as one goes back in time paper records tend to dry up and it is difficult to make connections. Dna testing will get you in the right group and show who you are or are not related to.Joe McKane.
THE FREEPORT PRESS

Pub. Thurs. Nov. 3, 1881
Harrison Co. OH

JAMES WATTERS, of Washington County, Pennsylvania, is a man that will do to tie to.

Some years ago he purchased with his accumulated savings a part of the Le Moyne farm, and when the panic of 1873 came he found himself finanncialy embarrassed.

After a severe struggle, he applied for the benefit of the bankrupt law. Subsequently, he struggled along and on Monday last he paid off the last dollar of his indebtedness in full - accepting no advantage the law gave him.

**************************

Courtesy post - not related

Robert Watters b. abt. 1888, Son of John; Scotland --> MA, OH, MI

I am searching for information / connections related to the following Watters family:

My specific interest is in the daughters (and any other children) and lives of Robert Watters & Annie Clark, seen below, though I am very interested in any other information.

First Generation
John A. Watters b: Abt. 1859 in Dysert, Scotland
+Janet [m.s. Unknown]
John and Janet had three children, as follows:

Second Generation:
Robert Watters b: Abt. 1888
+Annie Clark b: Abt. 1888	m: Abt. 1915
Children of Robert Watters & Annie Clark:
1. Charlotte Watters b: Abt. 1917 in MA
2. Janet Watters b: Abt. 1918

John A. Watters b: Abt. 1891
(no idea if he married, etc)

Grace Watters b: Abt. 1882
+Robert T. Young b: Abt. 1881
Children of Grace Watters & Robert Young:
1. Annie Young b: Abt. 1903
2. Robert B. Young b: Abt. 1906 in MA
3. Grace Young b: June 1908
4. Hester Young b: Abt. 1924
5. Betty Young b: Abt. 1925 in Michigan

What I know is this: Grace Watters, her husband Robert Young and eldest child emigrated from Scotland to Holyoke, MA about 1909-1910. They are living in this city on the 1910 census with three children.

In 1911, two brothers (John and Robert) and their father came over via Ellis Island to meet them, citing the Young address in Holyoke as their destination.

In 1920 I have found only Robert, and wife Annie (m.s. Clark) and one daughter (Clarks are my line) living in Cleveland.

However on the 1930 Census, the Young family is in Michigan with the addition of the two youngest daughters. Robert Watters is back in Holyoke Married to Annie Clark w/ two daughters.

Anyway … if you have anything to add would be glad to have it and would be happy to share. I Have lots of information on the Clarks, Annie Clark had quite a few siblings and lots of cousins, etc.

Thanks,

Laurel O’Donnell
Brooklyn, NY
Watters name

Watters with two 't's is a pronunciation variant. The basic form of the name(esp. in the west of Ireland) would be Waters, and the Irish names O Fuaruisce(and O Tuairisc) reflect the derivation of the name : the Irish 'uisce' = water (pronounced 'ishka').

Mary Watters/ Grandville Crow

Hi, am trying to carry on tracing family tree where my father left off. Am looking for birth and marriage of Mary Watters and Dr Grandville Crow. I know they left Dayton Ohio about 1850 to travel in covered wagon with several children, Dr Crow died in Southeast Missouri where there was an epidemic of malaria fever/yellow fever. Mary was pregnant, the family scattered, some travelled west with the wagon train, mary and son Tom made their way to Marion Kentucky, giving birth to her son Albert Crow. They moved on to Souther Ilinois to Lamb area of Hardin County where Tom died. Mary re-married to Willis Hamilton. Her son Albert Crow married Louise Keller daughter of Christopher Keller and Maurva (Lamb) Keller, they had several Childre, Russell (my grandfather) Charlie, Howard, Willis , Thomas and Viola.
My grandfather Russell Crowe married Elsie Dutton, Daughter of Dora (Page) and Edward Dutton.
My grandparents had 12 children, nine survived into adulthood Valesta,Everett, Vernon, Burtis, Eurita, Carl, L.C, David (my father) and John. Any info on how to trace birth and marriage and death of Grandville/GranvilleCrow and Mary Watters greatly appreciated.

Watters-Ohio Frank and Stephen John

I am looking for my connection to the Watters line. My great grandfather was Stephen John Watters who married Anna Marie Kelly. Stephen was born what I believe was Novemeber 14, 1890. His census records state that he was born in Ohio. His father was Frank Watters and his mother was Mary Ryan. (this is still to be confirmed). It appears that Frank Watters would have come from Ireland, and settled in Ohio. Most likely meaning that he had family there. I would like to find other siblings for Stephen John, and any information on Frank. Stephen moved with Anna Kelly to New York prior to 1920. Where they had their children.

If anyone has strong conections in Ohio to the Watters name, I would enjoy hearing from you as well. Any of the names sound familiar to anyone?

Note--there could be a change in Name as well. Other surnames-Watter, Water, Waters, and Watros. And stephens name could be mispelled on documents as Steven John, or Steven J. The 1930 census had it spelled as such.
