Waugh - Kirkwood, Belmont Co Ohio 1840

There is a John Waugh head of household in Kirkwood, Belmont County, Ohio in the 1840 census. Does anyone know where this family came from? The # of persons per age group is as follows:

Male
5<10 =1
10<15 =1
20,30 =2
40<50 =1
50<60 =1
70<80 =1

Females
0<5 =2
5<10 =1
10<15 =2
15<20 =2
20<30 =1
40<50 =1

Male Free colored 10<24 = 1male

They don't appear to be in Belmont in 1830 or 1850 so they must be on the move from Pennsylvania. There was a john Waugh family in Allegheny Co PA in 1830. Any thoughts on this migration? I am looking for the JOhn Waugh family that settled in Hennepin Putnam Illinois by 1850. He had a daughter born somewhere in Ohio in 1840.

Joanna Waugh

John Waugh and Augusteen Duduit

Augusteen Duduit was my 3rd great grand-aunt on my mother's side. I was researching the Duduit line filling in my blanks when I ran across her daughter Angeline Waugh, born 1826 - I found that Angeline married a William Brinegar in 1850. What has me on this so strong right now is the fact that Brinegar is my paternal great-grandmother's maiden name! With Angeline being born in Kentucky and my Brinegar line being from Kentucky, I know this is a link between the two sides of my family. But, I cannot connect this William Brinegar in my Brinegar line.

I was hoping that I would be lucky enough that someone on this board could shed some light on this for me.

You can either write me here or email me at socalgalnok@cox.net.

Thanks!

Karen Roberdes Wells

He continued to teach part-time at various schools throughout the county until the late 1990s.
He is survived by his three children, four grandchildren, his older brother Fred Waugh, his younger sister Betty Mattheus, and his cousin Marcia Russell, as well as other nephews and nieces.
Remembrances may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pollock Pines, Calif.

WIlliam H. Waugh b. 1806 Sct > Georgia>Alabama

I am looking for information about a William H. Waugh who married a Malinda Rutherford about 1838 in Georgia. He was a merchant. The family moved to Macon COunty, Alabama about 1843. He died sometime between 1860 and 1870. William and Malinda had children:
Margaret b abt 1838 (m. Wm C Bower)
Elizabeth
William
Laura Minnie b abt 1847 (m. Simmons)
Roger

I am trying to confirm where WIlliam came from in Scotland. I believe his father to have been Robert son of WIlliam Waugh and Mary Hiddleston from Nithsdale Scotland. They are buried in Dunscore cemetery. There is a story about RObert in a book called something like Dumrfieshire Worthies. The story mentioned that RObert had a son in the US that sent him money and Robert went out to join him about 1848 to some place called Gavannah ( which I think was Savannah). I also came across passenger list for a RObert age 70 aand a Elizabeth Waugh age 39 to New Orleans in 1849.

Does anyone have any information about the origins of this William of Georgia and Alabama.
Joanna Waugh
Hamilton, Ontario Canada

Waugh of Mason county WV

Researching my Waugh branch and looking to contact anyone with information that can help me.
Nancy E Waugh (1882-1956). Married Gus Johnson (1878-1924). They lived in Boone county but came from Putnam county. Nancy was originally from Mason county. Her parents were Gorey Waugh(1850-bet.1910-1920) and Abigail V Powell (1847-1923) Gorey's parents were Henry Waugh (1817-aft.1880) and Nancy E. (1828-aft 1880) last name unknown. Gorey had the following siblings- Sarah J, Nancy F, Elizabeth, Mary, Martha J, Sophie A, Virginia C, and Hattie M. I believe Henry's parents were Gorey Waugh (1795-aft.1850) and Sarah (1797-aft.1850) last name unknown. I also believe there may be some connection to Waughs in Gallia county, Ohio?

David Decker, if you're still out there, do you have any information on where Freeman Waugh, the elder, was buried? My information suggests that his daughter Cynthia Waugh is in my line and is the first wife of my Jabez Payne. It would seem she died and he remarried. Jabez Payne was in Commerce Michigan in the 1850 census, and I have found record that he purchased a cemetery lot in the Commerce Township cemetery in 1848. I think it might be his second wife. The younger Freeman Waugh (1832-1915) is buried in Maple River Cemetery, Shiawassee County, Michigan. I have been there, though that would seem to make him too young to be married to your Charlotte Kelley, maybe there were three generations of Freeman Waughs? Jabez Payne is buried in Maple River also, so I'm thinking they moved together to Shiawassee County.
Alexander Waugh & Sarah Taliaferro 1700's

Does anyone have any information on these two individuals? Alexander is the son of Rev. John Waugh and Elizabeth Madison. He was born abt. 1706.

I have seen a few GEDCOMs with his wife's name as Sarah and a few with her surname as Taliaferro. I can't seem to find any supporting documentation.

There appears to be at least three generations of Alexander Waugh

Alexander (1674-c.1722) married Catherine Webb
Alexander (?1706?-?) married Sarah ??Taliaferro??
Alexander (1734-1793) married Sarah Pearson Binns

There is an Alexander who appears to be the overseer for Colonel John Taliaferro (1687 - 1744) of Spotsylvania County at his plantation in what is now the county of Orange. We know that Alexander Waugh (1734 - 1793) and his descendants are from Orange Co., VA

27 Apr 1738 Col. John Taliaferro, Gentleman, of Spotsylvania County, made a lease for 150 aces of land in Orange County for the natural lives of Alexander Waugh, Sarah Waugh, his wife, and Richard Waugh, his son, and thereafter there are many records of Alexander Waugh and his family in the records of Orange and Culpepper Counties.

(Register of Overwharton Parish)

20 May 1749 Alexander Waugh, granted 100 acres adjoining land of Francis Conway and Taliaferro. (Virginia State Land Office Patent No. 27, 1748-1749, p. 191)

I have always been curious if this land was given to Alexander Waugh - because he was his son-in-law. However the 100 acres granted in 1749 was after John Taliaferro's death (if I have the correct date) Does anyone have any information or a will that would shed some light on Alexander Waugh and whether or not he was married to a Sarah Taliaferro.

Thanks in advance.

I hope someone can help me. I am looking for any information on my great-grandmother, Nora B Waugh. A possible Kiger family connection, and connections to Arkansas and maybe Kentucky.

What I've found so far is:

I was told she was full blooded or possibly half-Cherokee. She was born in Arkansas (according to census records) in 1893, and died in Craighead County, Arkansas in 1943. She married my great-grandfather, William Gordon Boling in 1911 in Jonesboro, Craighead County, AR.

On a census record it showed that her mother was from Kentucky, but no name given. Just "United States" listed for birthplace of father, and again no name.

I was told a long time ago that she was thought to have at least 2 half-brothers, maybe step-brothers: "Willie" Kiger, and maybe Ed.

Nora and William had several children; I know of Harold, Everett and Bertha Mae (my grandmother).

Sorry this is so lengthy. If anyone knows any information about any of these people, please respond or contact me through email.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Waugh Ancestors of Ontario, Canada (Brant & Wentworth Counties) - 1800-1900+

Looking for anyone researching the Thomas Waugh family and descendents in Ontario, Canada. Thomas Waugh & unknown wife's name migrated from Scotland and by about 1800 were living in Anacaster Twp in Wentworth County, Ontario. This was a rather large family, my wife's line running through their son Thomas Jr (b. 1801) who married Julia Emery in about 1819. They also had a large family with her line running through son James Waugh (b. 1820) who married Lydia Stenabaugh in about 1848. All of these families were in the Anacaster Twp and surrounding areas of Wentworth County.

My wife's line continues through their son James Brennan Waugh (b. 1849 near Copetown) who marries Aseneth Barbary in 1874 in Copetown, Beverly Twp, in Wentworth County. This is where we are stuck. Aseneth is Mohawk, possibly even full-blood Mohawk. She names her parents in the marriage registration as R. Barbary and Jane (no last name), stating she was born in about 1852 in Westminster but doesn't say which county (there are two, one in Middlesex County and one in Prescott County). At the time of her 1874 marriage, she gives Copetown as her residence but so far, I've not been able to find her there, at least not in the 1871 census (yet).

I have, however, found a William Richard Barbary (who goes by "Richard") married to Jane Rikely. The ages line up so it seems this is most likely the couple but so far, I cannot find them in the 1851 or 1861 census. I did find them in the 1871 census living in Hastings County, Sidney Twp. He's French Canadian (Catholic) and she, after some tracking, turns out to be of German ethnic origins (Methodist), her Rikely family firmly established in South Fredericksburg Twp, Lennox County, so clearly neither of these people are Native Americans. This leads me to now wonder if they might have adopted (or somehow acquired) Aseneth from a reservation or maybe a school, changing her "indian" name to Aseneth Barbary.

Aseneth and James Brennan Waugh had 4 children, three of which survived to adulthood. Their only daughter, Lydia Jane, is my wife's ancestor. Aseneth died in Brantford where they had lived ever since they married. She died in 1881 of consumption and was buried there in Greenwood Cemetery. James moved with his children to Chicago sometime in the 1890s and also remarried to a woman named Dora (last name unknown) but had no children with her. James B. Waugh died in Chicago in 1900 and was buried back home in Brantford with Aseneth. James' brother Franklin ("Frank") committed suicide in Brantford in 1911. He was married to Rose Ellen Franklin and had 3 children, Frank (b. 1882), Percy and Pearl (Percy and Pearl were twins, b. abt 1887 in Brantford). Pearl married Alexander "Alac" James Allan in abt 1913. Percy married Minnie Whitney Jones in 1916. Both marriages were in the Brantford area. We aren't sure who Frank married but we believe he was still living in Ontario in 1956 when my wife's aunt and uncle made a trip from southern California, visiting with a "Pearl" and another relative "Frank" (per an old postcard) before leaving Ontario and driving across Canada to visit some other relatives by the last name of Crow/Crowe in Alberta (exact town location unknown).

If anyone is related to this Waugh family and can help with any info, especially regarding Aseneth and her Native American origins (tribe, parents names, DOB, etc), we would very much like to hear from you. Many thanks.

WAUGH, ROBERT T. - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

WAUGH, ROBERT T.

Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, 339th Infantry, 85th Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Tremensucli, Italy, 11-14 May 1944. Entered service at: Augusta, Maine. Birth: Ashton, R.I. G.O. No.: 79, 4 October 1944. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy. In the course of an attack upon an enemy-held hill on 11 May, 1st Lt. Waugh personally reconnoitered a heavily mined area before entering it with his platoon. Directing his men to deliver fire on 6 bunkers guarding this hill, 1st Lt. Waugh advanced alone against them, reached the first bunker, threw phosphorus grenades into it and as the defenders emerged, killed them with a burst from his tommygun. He repeated this process on the 5 remaining bunkers, killing or capturing the occupants. On the morning of 14 May, 1st Lt. Waugh ordered his platoon to lay a base of fire on 2 enemy pillboxes located on a knoll which commanded the only trail up the hill. He then ran to the first pillbox, threw several grenades into it, drove the defenders into the open, and killed them. The second pillbox was next taken by this intrepid officer by similar methods. The fearless actions of 1st Lt. Waugh broke the Gustav Line at that point, neutralizing 6 bunkers and 2 pillboxes and he was personally responsible for the death of 30 of the enemy and the capture of 25 others. He was later killed in action in Itri, Italy, while leading his platoon in an attack.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Nettuno, Italy

Cemetery: A.B.M.C.
Hello,
I am only a beginner at this geneology game, but it is interesting...

My father was Albert Leo Waugh (the second, named for his uncle, though he didn't habitualy include that with his name).

Dad was the second of four children, with an older brother, Francis G. Waugh Jr., and two younger sisters, Ruth (Thorpe) and Patricia (Clark). My aunt Ruth lives in RI. All others are deceased.

My grandfather was Francis G. Waugh Sr. Married to Malvina (Tebo, changed from Thibault by her and possibly some of her sibs). Malvina's father was Alexander Thibault.

I would like to know as much as I can about Francis G's siblings and parents- I have only snaches of information.

I do not even know My gr-grandmother Thibault's name, and know nothing of her siblings.

If you Know anything about any of these or think you might be related, Please send me an email - I'd love to find some second cousins!

And if you are one of my first cousins... Hi!
Write and let me know how you are doing!

Thank you,
L.J.Waugh

I just found this message board and was interested in communicating about Hugh Waugh who married Maggie Brackney and had children in Clay Co, IN. Hugh is my g-grandmother's brother. His name was Hugh McCullough and he was the son of Benjamin McCullough and Minnie Brann of Clay County. Ben and Minnie divorced and Hugh was adopted out to the Waugh family when Minnie was ill for a prolonged period. My grandaunt is still alive and remembers her Uncle Hugh quite well..states he always was upset that he was adopted. He stayed in close touch with the McCulloughs and is listed in the obituaries of his natural mother and father, I have both. He had one brother, Thomas Raymond McCullough, buried in Sheperdsville and one sister, my g-grandmother, Elizabeth Clyda McCullough, buried in Higland Lawn, Terre Haute. I would like to share information and dates with the rest of his family as I don't know a lot about his family. My email is: jphillips777@earthlink.net
Thanks...James

I'm looking for information on the family of Jeanette Waugh, who I'm told came from Illinois.

Oh, those Irish roots!
Looking for William WAUGH (b.c. 1835 Ireland, son of Joseph WAUGH and Catherine HANLON). William married Mary BROWN in 1860 in Bonhill, Dnb, Sct. Between 1861 and 1870 - they had six children (Catherine, Isabella, Mary, James, William, Charles) born in the Bonhill area (Alexandria, Jamestown).
On the 1860 marriage cert. Joseph Waugh and wife Catherine were not listed as deceased. The family does suspect that Joseph and Catherine had left Ireland for Scotland (Glasgow or Dumbarton) by the mid-1850s. Although this may be wishful thinking, there is always hope.
Any information on this Waugh line would be wonderful.
John Waugh (c1785-c1820)

Seeking the parents of John Waugh, born about 1785 in Virginia, who died about 1820 while living in Christian Co., Kentucky.

John may have been the son of Richard Waugh (c1766-1842), the first postmaster in nearby Dickson Co., Tennessee, who came to Davidson Co. from Amherst Co., Virginia, about 1797.

On December 13, 1810, John Waugh and Mary Bronaugh Peyton (c1787-c1850) bonded to marry in Davidson Co., Tennessee. Their license itself was lost.

They had four known children: Charles Newton (1813-1888) who married Mary Ann Tinsley, Mariah M. (born 1817) who married John Robert Foster, Martha (born c1818) who married James Frank Foster, and James B. (born c1820) who probably remained a bachelor.
Waugh Family information

Seeking information on a Maggie Waugh. While doing family research I stumbled upon a marriage record for, I believe my great grandfather, John I. Clubb. The record, from the website of Oklahoma District Court Records, indicates a petition for marriage to Maggie Waugh in Ottawa County, Oklahoma 30 Jun 1923. I am seeking out any family information on Maggie Waugh to help establish her as one of the wives of my great grandfather and/or possibly that Maggie could be the mother of one of John's children. Thank you for your time and I remain hopeful for a reply.

Need Info about William Waugh b:1742

I am trying to establish if my 4th greatgrandfather William Waugh b:1742 is the ggrandson of Rev John William Waugh b:1630. My descent from William is as follows: William b:1742, Samuel b:1780, Samuel Abner(or Alfred)b:abt. 1814, Abner Quincy b: 1860, and my maternal grandmother Ida E Waugh b: 1889. I have established the descent of a William Waugh from Rev John as follows: Rev John b: 1630, John Jr. b: 1660, William b: 1710 and William b: 1742. I can't seem to find any documentation that shows that the two Williams b:1742 are the same person. I suspect that they are but cannot prove it. Does anyone have any information that would shed any light on this. Thanks much for any help.
