My grandmother, Jane and I have managed to find a lot of information on Jane’s father, Joe Cawley-Way from the following two sites.
The Ancestry site allows free viewing of the 1911 census at the moment which shows all Joe’s brothers and sisters.
site gives details of his career in the Royal Marines and all the ships and places he served in. He loved the life as a serving officer and was very proud of being a Royal Marine.
He married Mary Birdwood in 1932 and had two daughters – Jane and Rosalind.
He retired in 1950 as a Lt. Colonel and went to live at Broadgate, Millom, Cumbria where he managed and ran a small Estate for Sir William Lewthwaite.
Health problems (asthma and bronchitis) caused them to move to Bolton in 1955 where, through contact with friends, he ran a small coal brickette factory for 4 years.
He retired fully in 1959 and moved to Fox Warren, Withycombe, near Minehead where he and Mary lived very happily for 15 years.
He finally moved again to a smaller house with level garden called Gale Garden, Watchet, Somerset.
Mary died in 1985, 2 years after suffering a severe stroke. Joe’s health was also failing and he came back to Cumbria in Jan 1986 and lived with Jane, her husband Jack and their four children, Robert, Susan, Helen and Claire, till he died in June 1986.
Jack and Jane farmed Beckside Farm, Whicham, Millom, Cumbria for many years. Robert and his wife Rowena have now taken over the farm; they have three children – Isobel - 22, Rebecca- 21 and Patrick - 19.
Jane sends her love.
